  • One of the most important yet unresolved problems in molecular electronics is the controversy over the number and nature of multiple conductance peaks in single-molecule junctions. Currently, there are three competing explanations of this observation: (1) manifestation of different molecule-electrode contact geometries, (2) formation of gauche defects within the molecular core, (3) involvement of different electrode surface orientations [1]. However, the exact origin of multiple conductance peaks is not yet fully understood, which indicates our incomplete understanding of the scientifically as well as techno-logically important organic-metal contacts. To theoretically resolve this problem, we previously applied a multiscale computational approach that combines force fields molecular dynamics (FF MD), density functional theory (DFT), and matrix Green's function (MGF) calculations [2] to a thermally fluctuating haxanedithiol (C6DT) molecule stretched between flat Au(111) electrodes, but could observe only a single conductance peak [3]. In this presentation, using DFT geometry optimizations and MGF calculations, we consider molecular junctions with more realistic molecule-metal contact conformations and Au(111) electrode surface directions. We also conduct DFT-based molecular dynamics for the highly stretched junction models to confirm our conclusion. We conclude that the S-Au coordination number should be the more dominant factor than the electrode surface orientation.

  • The purpose of this paper was to investigate the significance of splinted and non-splinted implant-supported restorations with an internal connection for multiple consecutively missing teeth. Upon examination of the effects of fixture-abutment connection, the distribution of occlusal load was favorable in splinted implant-prosthesis with an external connection, but effect of strain distribution was not significant in splinted implant-prosthesis with an internal connection. In splinted implant-prostheses for short implants, strain distribution was not affected by the method of retention. For cement-retained prostheses, the effect of strain distribution due to splinting was not significant. In clinical studies, non-splinted prostheses with an internal connection for multiple consecutively missing teeth showed high survival rate, mild marginal bone loss, and stable periodontal condition. However, failure to achieve optimal proximal contact between single-unit prostheses may lead to food impaction, and veneer fracture may be inevitable when the framework provides inadequate support in the proximal region. In conclusion, splinted implant-prosthesis is not an indication in all cases, and clinical consideration of its use should be based on the patient's oral condition, such as location and number of implants, formation of proximal contact, canine guidance, existence of parafunctional habit, and oral hygiene, when multiple consecutively missing teeth are replaced by internal connection type implant.

  • The offshore subsea platforms are connected to subsea pipelines to transport gas/oil from wells. The pipe is a multilayered structure of polymer and steel for compensating both flexibility and strength. The pipe also requires reinforcement structures to endure the extreme environmental conditions. A vertebrae structure of bend restrictors is one of the reinforcement structures installed to protect the subsea pipe from excessive bending deformations. In this study, structural behaviors of the subsea pipeline with bend restrictors are investigated by the multi-body contact analysis in Abaqus 6.14-2. Contact forces of each bend restrictor extracted from the multi-body contact analysis can be boundary conditions for topology design optimization in Altair Hyperworks 13.0 Hypermesh-Optistruct. Multiple design constraints are considered to obtain a manufacturable design with efficient material usage. Through the multi-body contact analysis with optimized bend restrictors, it is confirmed that the bending performance of the optimized design is enhanced.

  • In a railway vehicle, contact between wheel and rail is a peculiar characteristic and variations of wheel and rail profile influence on the dynamic characteristics of railway vehicle. Thus the variations of the wheel and rail profile are very important in railway dynamics. Recently a research relating to active steering to improve the curving performance of vehicle is progressing actively at home and abroad. In this field, a pre-study for the wheel/rail contact geometry is needed and especially the variation of the wheel/rail contact geometry with wheel wear is the key design parameter to develop the controller of the active steering bogie. In this paper, we have experimentally studied to analyze the variation of the wheel/rail contact geometry with wheel wear as a pre-study to develop the active steering bogie for electric multiple unit (EMU). For this, we have made an experiment with EMU operating in curving area. We have measured the wear profiles of the wheel of the test vehicle and analyzed the wheel/rail contact geometry with a mileage of the test vehicle. In experiment with test vehicle, we have got the useful data to design the steering controller of the wheelset.

  • Purpose: Over the past two years, most Korean nursing students had to go through distance learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During the pandemic, amental health crisis has emerged among nursing students in South Korea. The study aimed to examine the relationships among social contact, depression, loneliness, and suicidal ideation. Methods: A cross-sectional survey design was used to collect data from nursing students. The survey was conducted onlinein South Korea. A total of 184 nursing students were recruited from December 2021 to April 2022. For data analysis, the frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation of the general characteristics of the subjects were calculated using IBM/SPSS Statistics 25.0. To examine the mediating effect of depression and loneliness on the relationship between social contact and suicidal ideation, multiple linear regression was used to analyze associations among social contact, depression, loneliness, and suicidal ideation. Results: The average age was 22.69±5.66 years (range=18~54), and the sex distribution was 155 females among 184 nursing students. Lower social contact among nursing students was significantly associated with higher depression and loneliness. Loneliness significantly mediated the relationship between social contact and suicidal ideation innursing students. Conclusion: The findings suggest that strategies for enhancing social contact and reducing depression and loneliness should be considered to improve suicidal ideation among nursing students.

  • This study aimed to identify how social contact, depression, and anxiety influence suicidal ideation of the elderly related to general characteristics. The objects were 198 elderly living in Mungyeong-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do. The data were collected from 2, March to 15, April 2021. Collected data were analyzed by t-tests, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple stepwise regression analysis using SPSS 24.0. Findings revealed 1) Pearson's correlation coefficient indicated significant association among social contact, depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation 2) Multiple regression analysis showed that the influencing factors have 44.9% of explanation power in suicidal ideation of the elderly: depression(β=.430, p< .001), perceived financial status(β=-.198, p<.001), psychiatric treatment history (β=-.182, p=.002), and social contact (β=-.155, p=.007) in order. The conclusion of this study indicates that we need to pay interdisciplinary attention to the mental health of the elderly in the Covid-19 pandemic. Based on the findings, health professionals should provide elderly persons with comprehensive and appropriate management to prevent suicidal ideation upon factors. Additionally, there should be establishing a system to access and ensure social contact for the elderly.

  • In this paper, the electrical characteristics of the non-contact transformer is presented using conventional coupled inductor theory. In high power applications, the non-contact transformer is so bulky and heavy that it poses some maintenance problems. Therefore it should be divided into some light transformer modules. This paper shows the analytic method of how to measure the parameters of the multiple connected non-contact transformer The analytical results are verified through measurement.

  • Food impaction between the implant prostheses and adjacent teeth is the most frequently observed problem. It may be caused by the migration of the adjacent teeth. This symptom may be observed at the mesial aspect of implant prostheses especially, and related with the multiple contributing factors including teeth vitality and antagonist. Idal proximal contact with optimal strength and shape should be made for preventing the food impaction. Shape of customized abutment and prosthesis should have optimal emergence profile. Long duration from the extraction to the delivery of implant prostheses, the adjacent teeth and antagonist teeth may have possibility of occlusal interferences. Remained teeth mobility can induce the food impaction regardless of interproximal contact strength. Occlusal adjustment to remove occlusal interferences can be a method for enhancing the stability of interproximal contact.

  • The bifurcation problem of thin walled structures in contact with rigid surfaces is formulated by adopting the multiple scales asymptotic technique. The general theory developed in this paper is very useful for the bifurcation analysis of waviness instabilities in the sheet metal forming. The formulation is presented in a full Lagrangian formulation. Through this general formulation, the bifurcation functional is derived within an error of O($(E^4)$) (E: shell's thickness parameter). This functional can be used in numerical solutions to sheet metal forming instability problem.

  • Multiple robotics systems with several sub-chains have a characteristic that grasp a common object with internal loading not to loose the grip. The investigation for the internal loading of a triple manipulator has been few as compared to a dual manipulator. In this paper, type of the internal loading for a triple manipulator system is investigated through analysis of the null space of the system. Several types of the internal loading are shown for general planar and spatial type triple robots, which rigidly grasp the common object. The general scheme is applied to analysis of the internal loading for the three-fingered and three-legged robots having a point contact with the grasped object.
