The optimal number of users achieving the maximum sum throughput is analyzed in zero-forcing (ZF) based multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with a large number of base station (BS) antennas. By utilizing deterministic ergodic sum rates for the ZF-beam forming (ZF-BF) and ZF-receiver (ZF-R) with a large number of BS antennas [1], [2], we can obtain the ergodic sum throughputs for the ZF-BF and ZF-R for the uplink and downlink frame structures, respectively. Then, we can also formulate and solve the optimization problems maximizing the ergodic sum throughputs with respect to the number of users. This paper shows that the approximate downlink sum throughput for the ZF-BF is a concave function and the approximate uplink sum throughput for the ZF-R is also a concave function in a feasible range with respect to the number of users. The simulation results verify the analyses and show that the derived numbers of users provide the maximum sum throughputs for the ZF-BF as well as ZF-R in multiuser MIMO systems with a large number of BS antennas.
We treat the problem of channel estimation and interference cancellation in multiuser ultra-wide-band (UWB) communication systems over multipath fading channels. The UWB system under consideration employs a random time-hopping impulse radio format. We develop a channel estimation method based on linear weighted algorithm. An iterative channel estimation and interference cancellation scheme is proposed to successively improve the receiver performance. We also consider systems employing multiple transmit and/or receive antennas. For systems with multiple receive antennas, we develop a diversity receiver for the wellseparated antennas. For systems with multiple transmit antennas, we propose to make use of Alamouti’s space-time transmission scheme, and develop the corresponding channel estimation and interference cancellation receiver techniques. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the performance of various UWB receiver techniques developed in this paper.

In this paper, we show that performance can be improved by using multiple antennas in the conventional orthogonal code hopping multiplexing (OCHM) scheme, which was proposed for accommodating a larger number of users with low channel activities than the number of orthogonal codewords used in code division multiple access (CDMA)-based communication systems through downlink statistical multiplexing. First, we introduce two different types of OCHM systems together with orthogonal codeword allocation strategies, and then derive their mathematical expression for log-likelihood ratio (LLR) values according to the two different schemes. Next, when a turbo encoder based on the LLR computation is used, we evaluate performance on the frame error rate (FER) for the aformentioned OCHM system. For comparison, we also show performance for the existing symbol mapping method using multiple antennas, which was used in 3GPP standards. As a result, it is shown that our OCHM system with multiple antennas based on the proposed orthogonal codeword allocation strategy leads to performance gain over the conventional system---energy required to satisfy a target FER is significantly reduced.

The ultra-wideband (UWB) spectrum available for commercial applications has offered us an opportunity to achieve high-speed wireless communications and high-accuracy location applications. As one of key research areas in UWB technology, a lot of innovative broadband and miniaturization techniques for UWB antennas have been greatly invented and developed for years. This paper reviews the development of UWB antenna design in the past decade. Starting with a brief introduction of the specific requirements and promising applications of UWB systems, the unique design challenges of UWB antennas are highlighted. Next, the important milestones of UWB antenna designs are briefed. After that, a variety of planar UWB antennas invented for broadband operation, miniaturization, and multiple functions are introduced. Last, the comments on the development of UWB antennas in future are shared.
Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems offer significant enhancements in terms of their data rate and channel capacity compared to traditional systems. However, correlation degrades the system performance and imposes practical limits on the number of antennas that can be incorporated into portable wireless devices. The use of switched parasitic antennas (SPAs) is a possible solution, especially where it is difficult to obtain sufficient signal decorrelation by conventional means. The covariance matrix represents the correlation present in the propagation channel, and has significant impact on the MIMO channel capacity. The results of this work demonstrate a significant improvement in the MIMO channel capacity by using SPA with the knowledge of the covariance matrix for all pattern configurations. By employing the "water-pouring algorithm" to modify the covariance matrix, the channel capacity is significantly improved compared to traditional systems, which spread transmit power uniformly across all the antennas. A condition number is also proposed as a selection metric to select the optimal pattern configuration for MIMO-SPAs.

We introduce an optimization of the number of base station antennas in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless powered communication network (WPCN). We use channel hardening property of massive MIMO system to approximate channel gain in terms of the number of base station antennas. Then, we find an optimal solution by partial differential and obtain a closed form solution by using Lambert-W function. The simulation results show that the approximation and the method of solving the optimization problem are reasonable, and the optimal solution of proposed scheme is almost identical to the optimal number of base station antennas by the exhaustive search method.

propose a mobile relay structure for vehicles with multiple antennas, which can increase performances of mobile communication systems and broadcasting systems significantly. Since cell searching and DoA estimation are required for the terminal in hard handover cellular system, joint techniques for cell searching and DoA estimation are proposed to apply beamforming technique for the mobile relay with multiple antennas located at the cell boundary. The proposed cell searching and DoA estimation techniques are evaluated by computer simulation under the environment similar to WiBro system.

Motivated by recent works on spectrum-sharing systems, this paper investigates the effects of transmit diversity on the peak interference power limited cognitive radio(CR) networks. In particular, we derive the ergodic and outage capacities of a spectrum-sharing system with multiple transmit-antennas. To derive the capacities, peak interference power constraint is imposed to protect the primary receiver. In a CR transmitter and receiver pair with multiple antennas at the transmitter side, the allowable transmit power is distributed over the transmit-antennas to achieve transmit diversity at the receiver. We investigate the effect of this power distribution when a peak interference power constraint is imposed to protect the primary receiver. We show that the transmit diversity does not improve the ergodic capacity compared to the single-antenna system. On the other hand, the transmit diversity significantly improves the outage capacity. For example, two transmit-antennas improve the outage capacity 10 times compared to the single-antenna with a 0 dB interference constraint.

The next generation cellular radio systems require high data rate transmission and large system capacity In order to meet these requirements, multiple antennas can be used at the base and mobile stations, forming MIMO(multiple-input, multiple-output) channels This paper considers a downlink MIMO system assuming a large number of base station antennas, a small number of mobile station antennas, and rich-scattering, quasi-stationary, and flat-fading channel environments When the channel state information is given at the base station in a single user system, a MIMO technique with SVD(singular value decomposition) and water-filling can achieve the maximal downlink channel capacity. In multi-user environments, however, SDMA(space division multiple acces) technique can be used to further increase the total channel capacity supported by the base station This paper proposes a MIMO SDMA technique which can transmit parallel data streams to each of multiple users. The proposed method. can achieve higher total channel capacity than SVD-based MIMO techniques or conventional SDMA using smart antennas.
In this paper, pseudo noise (PN) code acquisition performance with multiple antennas in a UWB time hopping/code division multiple access system is analyzed. The closed form for the conditional probability is derived, using the Gauss-Hermite quadrature formula, when the signal with Gaussian distribution goes through the lognormal fading channel. The performance comparison of the above mentioned schemes shows that the code acquisition performance with a diversity combining technique, especially when increasing the number of antennas, is more robust than that using no diversity.
