Interference Elimination Method of Ultrasonic Sensors Using K-Nearest Neighbor Algorithm (KNN 알고리즘을 활용한 초음파 센서 간 간섭 제거 기법)

  • This paper introduces an interference elimination method using k-nearest neighbor (KNN) algorithm for precise distance estimation by reducing interference between ultrasonic sensors. Conventional methods compare current distance measurement result with previous distance measurement results. If the difference exceeds some thresholds, conventional methods recognize them as interference and exclude them, but they often suffer from imprecise distance prediction. KNN algorithm classifies input values measured by multiple ultrasonic sensors and predicts high accuracy outputs. Experiments of distance measurements are conducted where interference frequently occurs by multiple ultrasound sensors of same type, and the results show that KNN algorithm significantly reduce distance prediction errors. Also the results show that the prediction performance of KNN algorithm is superior to conventional voting methods.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out whether image similarity between celebrities and brands on social network service be a determinant to predict advertising effectiveness. To this end, an advertising effect prediction model for celebrity endorsed advertising was created and its validity was verified through a machine learning method which is a big data analysis technique. Firstly, the celebrity-brand image similarity, which was used as an independent variable, was quantified by the association network theory with social big data, and secondly a multiple regression model which used data representing advertising effects as a dependent variable was repeatedly conducted to generate an advertising effect prediction model. The accuracy of the prediction model was decided by comparing the prediction results with the survey outcomes. As for a result, it was proved that the validity of the predictive modeling of advertising effects was secured since the classification accuracy of 75%, which is a criterion for judging validity, was shown. This study suggested a new methodological alternative and direction for big data-based modeling research through celebrity-brand image similarity structure based on social network theory, and effect prediction modeling by machine learning.

  • Oil price prediction is an important issue for the regulators of the government and the related industries. When employing the time series techniques for prediction, however, it becomes difficult and challenging since the behavior of the series of oil prices is dominated by quantitatively unexplained irregular external factors, e.g., supply- or demand-side shocks, political conflicts specific to events in the Middle East, and direct or indirect influences from other global economical indices, etc. Identifying and quantifying the relationship between oil price and those external factors may provide more relevant prediction than attempting to unclose the underlying structure of the series itself. Technically, this implies the prediction is to be based on the vectoral data on the degrees of the relationship rather than the series data. This paper proposes a novel method for time series prediction of using Semi-Supervised Learning that was originally designed only for the vector types of data. First, several time series of oil prices and other economical indices are transformed into the multiple dimensional vectors by the various types of technical indicators and the diverse combination of the indicator-specific hyper-parameters. Then, to avoid the curse of dimensionality and redundancy among the dimensions, the wellknown feature extraction techniques, PCA and NLPCA, are employed. With the extracted features, a timepointspecific similarity matrix of oil prices and other economical indices is built and finally, Semi-Supervised Learning generates one-timepoint-ahead prediction. The series of crude oil prices of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) was used to verify the proposed method, and the experiments showed promising results : 0.86 of the average AUC.

Deep Learning based BER Prediction Model in Underwater IoT Networks (딥러닝 기반의 수중 IoT 네트워크 BER 예측 모델)

  • The sensor nodes in underwater IoT networks have practical limitations in power supply. Thus, the reduction of power consumption is one of the most important issues in underwater environments. In this regard, AMC(Adaptive Modulation and Coding) techniques are used by using the relation between SNR and BER. However, according to our hands-on experience, we observed that the relation between SNR and BER is not that tight in underwater environments. Therefore, we propose a deep learning based MLP classification model to reflect multiple underwater channel parameters at the same time. It correctly predicts BER with a high accuracy of 85.2%. The proposed model can choose the best parameters to have the highest throughput. Simulation results show that the throughput can be enhanced by 4.4 times higher than the conventionally measured results.

  • Solar energy harvesting IoT devices prioritize maximizing the utilization of collected energy due to the periodic recharging nature of solar energy, rather than minimizing energy consumption. Meanwhile, research on edge AI, which performs machine learning near the data source instead of the cloud, is actively conducted for reasons such as data confidentiality and privacy, response time, and cost. One such research area involves performing various audio AI applications using audio data collected from multiple IoT devices in an IoT edge computing environment. However, in most studies, IoT devices only perform sensing data transmission to the edge server, and all processes, including data preprocessing, are performed on the edge server. In this case, it not only leads to overload issues on the edge server but also causes network congestion by transmitting unnecessary data for learning. On the other way, if data preprocessing is delegated to each IoT device to address this issue, it leads to another problem of increased blackout time due to energy shortages in the devices. In this paper, we aim to alleviate the problem of increased blackout time in devices while mitigating issues in server-centric edge AI environments by determining where the data preprocessed based on the energy state of each IoT device. In the proposed method, IoT devices only perform the preprocessing process, which includes sound discrimination and noise removal, and transmit to the server if there is more energy available than the energy threshold required for the basic operation of the device.

Prediction of Acute Toxicity to Fathead Minnow by Local Model Based QSAR and Global QSAR Approaches

  • We applied several machine learning methods for developing QSAR models for prediction of acute toxicity to fathead minnow. The multiple linear regression (MLR) and artificial neural network (ANN) method were applied to predict 96 h $LC_{50}$ (median lethal concentration) of 555 chemical compounds. Molecular descriptors based on 2D chemical structure were calculated by PreADMET program. The recursive partitioning (RP) model was used for grouping of mode of actions as reactive or narcosis, followed by MLR method of chemicals within the same mode of action. The MLR, ANN, and two RP-MLR models possessed correlation coefficients ($R^2$) as 0.553, 0.618, 0.632, and 0.605 on test set, respectively. The consensus model of ANN and two RP-MLR models was used as the best model on training set and showed good predictivity ($R^2$=0.663) on the test set.

This network uses multiple sets of simple backpropagation networks one of which is selected according to which division (corresponding to a cluster of the self-organizing feature map) in data space the current input data belongs to. This lends itself to a very training and processing implementation required for real time control.

  • Predicting Alpha-helicies, Beta-sheets and Turns of a proteins secondary structure is a complex non-linear task that has been approached by several techniques such as Neural Networks, Genetic Algorithms, Decision Trees and other statistical or heuristic methods. This project introduces a new machine learning method by combining Bayesian Inference with offline trained Multilayered Perceptron (MLP) models as the likelihood for secondary structure prediction of proteins. With varying window sizes of neighboring amino acid information, the information is extracted and passed back and forth between the Neural Net and the Bayesian Inference process until the posterior probability of the secondary structure converges.
