  • Numerical analysis using three dimensional finite volume method for the discretization, adaptive grid method for the numerical accuracy, multiple rotating frame method for the rotating body and the standard $k-{\epsilon}$ model for the turbulent flow was performed to understand the heat transfer phenomena and to improve the efficiency of the scroll compressor. The temperature measurement was carried out under ARI condition. It was found that the fluid temperature in the compressor was predicted accurately while the temperature of the motor coil showed large discrepancy between the calculation and experiment due to the large anisotropy of the conductivity and non homogeneity. We found that the efficiency of the compressor depends on the inlet temperature of the compressing part and the flow pattern around the inlet region of the compressing part influences the inlet temperature due to high surface temperature of the main frame. The efficiency of the compressor using Coanda effect is higher than the previous one because the smooth suction at the inlet region of the compressing part leads to low heat transfer to the refrigerant of the compressor.

  • We consider the sensor location problem (SLP) on a given sensor field. We present the sensor field as grid of points. There are several types of sensors which have different detection ranges and costs. If a sensor is placed in some point, the points inside of its detection range can be covered. The coverage ratio decreases with distance. The problem we consider in this thesis is called multiple-type differential coverage sensor location problem (MDSLP). MDSLP is more realistic than SLP. The coverage quantities of points are different with their distance form sensor location in MDSLP. The objective of MDSLP is to minimize total sensor costs while covering every sensor field. This problem is known as NP-hard. We propose a new integer programming formulation of the problem. In comparison with the previous models, the new model has a smaller number of constraints and variables. This problem has symmetric structure in its solutions. This group is used for pruning in the branch-and-bound tree. We solved this problem by branch-and-cut(B&C) approach. We tested our algorithm on about 60 instances with varying sizes.

  • Recently, there are many studies, that considering green wireless cellular networks, have taken the energy consumption of the base station (BS) into consideration. In this work, we first introduce an energy consumption model of multi-mode sharing BS powered by multiple energy sources including renewable energy, local storage and power grid. Then communication load requests of the BS are transformed to energy demand queues, and battery energy level and worst-case delay constraints are considered into the virtual queue to ensure the network QoS when our objective is to minimize the long term electricity cost of BSs. Lyapunov optimization method is applied to work out the optimization objective without knowing the future information of the communication load, real-time electricity market price and renewable energy availability. Finally, linear programming is used, and the corresponding energy efficient scheduling policy is obtained. The performance analysis of our proposed online algorithm based on real-world traces demonstrates that it can greatly reduce one day's electricity cost of individual BS.

  • A numerical study is carried out for the detonation wave propagation through a T-branch. The T-branch is a crucial part of the combustion wave igniter, a novel concept of rocket ignition system aimed for the simultaneous ignition of multiple combustion chambers by delivering detonation waves. Euler equation and induction parameter equation are used as governing equations with a reaction term modeled from the chemical kinetics database obtained from a detailed chemistry mechanism. Second-order accurate implicit time integration and third-order space accurate TVD algorithm were used for solution of the coupled equations. Over two-million grid points enabled the capture of the dynamics of the detonation wave propagation including the degeneration and re-initiation phenomena, and some of the design factors were be obtained for the CWI flame tubes.

  • This paper is about power line communication(PLC) over the low power voltage grid. The main advantage with power line communication is the use of an existing infrastructure. The PLC channel can be modeled as having multi-path propagation with frequency-selective fading, typical power lines exhibit signal attenuation increasing with length and frequency. OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) is a modulation technique where multiple low data rate carriers are combined by a transmitter to form a composite high data rate transmission. The performance in consideration of the multi-path(echoes) powerline scheme is analyzed and verified by computer simulation.

  • The landslide disaster damage has been increased by mountain development, leading to construction of educational facilities, medical facilities, petty industrial facilities, and large housing complexes. Therefore, effective regulation is required as an effort in urban planning solutions. For suggesting specific mitigation strategies on urban landslide, this study aims to define evaluation criteria for urban planning management of debris-flow disaster. AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process), one of the multiple criterion decision making methods, was utilized in this study. This study makes use of 16 sub-criteria under the framework of hazard, exposure, and vulnerability, and well-planned expert survey measures their weights. The weights are also applied to evaluate each grid in urban space (min $10{\times}10m$) and classify it with red, orange, yellow, or green grade so that areas at higher risk are clearly identified. This study concludes that the suggested method is useful to support a strategies for urban planning management of debris-flow disaster, particularly in a GIS base.

  • The past several years have witnessed an ever-increasing acceptance and adoption of parallel processing, both for high performance scientific computing as well as for more general purpose applications. Furthermore with increasing needs to perform the complex flow calculations in an efficient manner, the use of the message passing model on distributed networks has emerged as an important alternative to the expensive supercomputers. This work attempts to provide a generic framework to enable the parallelization of all CFD-related works using the master-slave model. This framework consists of (1) input geometry, (2) domain decomposition, (3) grid generation, (4) flow computations, (5) flow visualization, and (6) output display as the sequential components, but performs computations for (2) to (5) in parallel on the workstation clustering. The flow computations are parallized by having multiple copies of the flow-code to solve a PDE on different spatial regions on different processors, while their flow data are exchanged across the region boundaries, and the solution is time-stepped. The Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) is used for distributed communication in this work.

  • Through the correspondence works with international electrotechnical vocabulary(IEV) in the smart grid field and power information technology field, we analyzed cases for discussion of terms and definitions in the IEV and then proposed an advanced procedure and computing system for standardization of International Electronical Committee(IEC) terminologies. The standardization procedure consists of processes for existing terminology, new terminology and correspondent terminology which have different structures. An example of the standardization work of correspondent terminology is given. The standardization computing system are based on the process for terminology extraction, terminology verification and terminology management which could provide the Wikipedia type terminology search function. In order to prevent that there exist multiple terminologies in IEV, the database search system is needed to be developed. We proposed the 'IEV_Term_Search' program which is the database search system. Terminology standardization of different technical committees(TC) and completion of the IEV to promote cooperation between TC 1 and the TCs must be followed by revision and standardization using the standardization computing system.

  • The static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) of cascaded H-bridge configuration accompanying multiple separate DC sides is inherently subject to the problem of uneven DC voltages. These DC voltages in one leg can be controlled by adjusting the AC-side output voltage of each cell inverter, which is proportional to the active power. However, when the phase current is extremely small, large AC-side voltage is required to generate the active power to balance the cell voltages. In this study, an alternative zero-sequence current injection method is proposed, which facilitates effective cell balancing controllers at no load, and has no effect on the power grid because the injected zero sequence current only flows within the STATCOM delta circuit. The performance of the proposed method is verified through simulation and experiments.

  • A PC-computer program RADAP has been developed in this study to perform a quick real-time analysis of dose assessment following an accident in a nuclear facility. RADAP uses an interactive LKagrangian puff model in simulating the transport and diffusion of radioactive plume in the atmosphere. For real-time analysis, RADAP treats one or multiple puffs of ground-level releases, simultaneously. It is assumed to maintain a Gaussian distribution within the puff and the diffusion coefficients are computed using the USNRC's normal sigma curve method. The program, however, does not consider the spatial variations but the temporal variations in wind conditions. Whole body and thyroid doses for 3$\times$31 grid are directed to output files, and they are also displayed through computer graphics on VGA or EGA color monitor. The results show that RADAP can be an excellent tool for quick estimation of accidental doses.
