An Experimental Approach to Multiple Case Constructions in Korean

  • Multiple Nominative Constructions (MNCs) and Multiple Accusative Constructions (MACs) have been some of the hottest and interesting topics in Korean syntax. This paper took empirical approaches to these constructions and examined native speakers' grammaticality judgements of these constructions. Though there are lots of previous studies on these constructions, Ryu (2010, 2013a, 2013b, 2013c) recently tried to unify MNCs and MACs into Multiple Case Constructions (MCCs) and to classify them into 16 types based on the semantic relations. This paper includes experiments which were performed on these 16 different types. The experiments were designed following Johnson (2008); and the native speakers' intuition was measured with two scales, numerical estimates and line drawing, though the latter was adopted in the actual analyses. Through the experiment, the following facts were observed: (i) the grammaticality of the MCCs varies depending on their semantic relations, (ii) MNCs were more grammatical than MACs if both constructions occurred in similar environments, and (iii) the sentences in some MAC types had much lower grammaticality than those in the others, as Ryu (2013b, 2013c) mentioned.

  • To compete with large construction companies whose dominance in market share is deepening recently, the needs for improving field production system of mid-size construction companies have increased rapidly. The development of an adequate model that focuses on the organizational size and work process of the mid-size construction companies are needed to increase productivity through the informatization in the construction industry[0]. The authors of this study used case studies on the problems of the mid-size construction companies in procuring work and presented a method to solve such problems so that the managers in head office of those mid-size construction companies can effecitively deal with multiple sites[0].

  • Concurrent construction (or overlapping) is an alternative project delivery process to reduce time-tomarket such that the owner can get higher profits; the increased profits due to shortened project duration would exceed the loss of profits from the increased cost, if any. For more effective concurrent construction, a new conceptual framework for concurrent construction planning is suggested. With multiple work methods available in each activity, the performance of overlapping between two activities in terms of cost is affected by the compatibility between work methods selected and the benefit to the project owner is determined by internal rate of return (RoR). The impact of the compatibility between work methods and the conceptual framework are explained by a hypothetical case study.

  • 본 연구에서는 여러 대의 타워 크레인이 다양한 후보지점을 갖고, 자재 역시 다양한 야적 후좌지점을 가질 때 자재 운반 최적화를 지원하기 위한 유전자 알고리즘 기반의 모델을 제시하고자 한다. 대형 건축공사에서 타워 크레인의 위치와 자재 야적 위치의 변화는 자재 운반시간의 변화를 가져온다. 또한 여러 대의 타워 크레인을 사용하는 경우 각 자재의 운반에 어떠한 타워 크레인을 배정하느냐에 따라 작업의 효율성이 변화한다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 다중의 타워 크레인 설치 후보지, 여러 종류의 자재, 자재 야적 후보지점간의 다양하고 복잡한 상관관계를 다루기 위하여 유전자 알고리즘을 적용한 다중 양중장비 및 자재 야적 위치 최적화모델을 제시하였다. 또한, 제시된 모델을 사례에 적용하여 적용 과정을 예시하고 활용성을 검증하였다.

  • 본 논문에서는 조합 다치논리 회로를 구성하는 이론을 제시하였다. 먼저 조합 다치논리 회로구성은 입력되는 변수를 기준으로 하여 셀을 구성한 후 이를 확장하여 일반적인 경우에 까지 적용하도록 하였으므로 구성절차가 단순하고 규칙적이다. 본 논문에서 제시한 다치논리 회로구성이론은 규칙성, 간단성, 모듈성의 특징을 가지며, 특히 다치논리 회로에 입력되는 변수가 증가되는 경우 다치논리 회로 구성은 확장성을 갖는다.

Virtual Reality Safety Training on Multiple Platforms

  • A construction site is a highly complex and constantly changing environment, where hazardous areas are difficult to detect if workers lack sufficient knowledge and awareness. Thus, frequent worker safety training is required. Numerous studies on using virtual reality (VR) for safety training were published. While they demonstrate the potential for improving the skills necessary to avoid accidents in the construction industry, they remain difficult to apply at actual construction sites. VR requires specialized hardware and software, limiting workers' access and restricting workers' participation in training sessions. As a result, this paper proposes multiple platforms for immersive virtual reality safety training (VRMP) based on Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) and web technologies such as immersive web (WebXR). The VRMP is compatible with mobile and desktop devices currently by workers and demonstrates scenario models familiar to workers. Also, it reduces development time by utilizing Building Information Models (BIM). Additionally, The VRMP collects data from workers in a virtual environment to assess each worker's safety level, assisting workers in effectively and comfortably gaining a better understanding and raising their awareness. This paper develops a case study based on the VRPM in order to assess its effectiveness.

  • Transportation infrastructure is critical to economic growth of a country such as China. Careful evaluation of investments in traffic infrastructure projects is therefore pertinent. As traditional evaluation methods do not consider the uncertainty of future cash flows and mobility during project execution, the real option approach is gradually gaining recognition in the context of valuing construction and infrastructure projects. However, many of the cases only evaluate individual options separately although multiple options often exist in a typical large infrastructure project. Using a highway project in China as a case study, this paper first evaluates a deferment option and a growth option embedded in the project. Subsequently, the values are combined using the fuzzy analytical hierarchy process. It is found that the combined value is less than the sum of the two option values. This finding is consistent with the theoretical observations given in past real option literature despite the use of a different approach.

미계측 관측 강수 자료 생성을 통한 제주도 지역의 수문총량 추정 (Estimating the Total Precipitation Amount with Simulated Precipitation for Ungauged Stations in Jeju Island)

  • 본 연구에서는 미계측 강수자료를 생성하여 공간 해석함으로써 제주도의 정확한 수문총량을 산정하였다. 미계측 강수자료는 본 연구에서 제시된 수정된 다중회귀선형 모형으로 생성하였으며 공간강수량은 PRISM을 적용하여 구하였다. 수정된 다중선형회귀 모형에 의한 미계측 강수자료의 추정 값들은 기존의 강수 패턴과 유사한 양상을 나타내어 모형의 정확도가 우수한 것으로 나타났으며, 공간강수량의 해석결과는 Case 1(원자료)과 Case 2(미계측 강수자료를 보완한 자료)의 연평균 강수량이 약 1.5%의 미미한 차이를나타내었으나 고도별 연평균 강수량 차이는 최대 37.4%가 증가하는 것으로 산정되었다. 따라서 본 연구에서 제안한 미계측 관측 자료 생성방법은 현재 관측소의 밀도가 낮은 곳과 국지적으로 강수량의 변화가 큰 곳에서의 수문총량의 산정시 유용할 것으로 판단된다.

Stable modal identification for civil structures based on a stochastic subspace algorithm with appropriate selection of time lag parameter

  • Based on the alternative stabilization diagram by varying the time lag parameter in the stochastic subspace identification analysis, this study aims to investigate the measurements from several cases of civil structures for extending the applicability of a recently noticed criterion to ensure stable identification results. Such a criterion demands the time lag parameter to be no less than a critical threshold determined by the ratio of the sampling rate to the fundamental system frequency and is firstly validated for its applications with single measurements from stay cables, bridge decks, and buildings. As for multiple measurements, it is found that the predicted threshold works well for the cases of stay cables and buildings, but makes an evident overestimation for the case of bridge decks. This discrepancy is further explained by the fact that the deck vibrations are induced by multiple excitations independently coming from the passing traffic. The cable vibration signals covering the sensor locations close to both the deck and pylon ends of a cable-stayed bridge provide convincing evidences to testify this important discovery.

Translocal and Transnational Movements of Bugis and the Construction of Multiple Identities: The Case of Bugis in North Kalimantan of Indonesia and Sabah and Johor of Malaysia

  • It is widely known that the Bugis people, originally from South Sulawesi, have been migrating to many places, including both the Indonesian and Malaysian sides of the borders today. The translocal and transnational movements of the Bugis people, especially to North Kalimantan of Indonesia and Sabah and Johor of Malaysia, have occurred in several waves, particularly during the 17th century, around 1965 and from 1980 to the present. The fall of the kingdom of Somba Opu in South Sulawesi and the rise Dutch colonial power have been the triggers for the early movement of the Bugis to both the Indonesian and Malaysian borders. This was followed by the second push of the Islamic rebellion in South Sulawesi, around 1965, creating another big wave of Bugis movement. The most recent one has been mainly due to economic reasons. These different phases of the movements, as well as the dynamic interplay of various aspects, such as citizenship, ethnic, and sub-ethnic groupings, practicing of cultural traditions and keeping the language, to mention a few, have contributed to the process of the construction of the multiple identities of the Bugis. Indeed, the Bugis people are no longer identified or identify themselves as a single group, but rather have fluid and contesting identities. This paper will discuss three main issues: the history of the translocal and transnational movements of the Bugis to North Kalimantan, Sabah and Johor; the process of adaptation to these new places; and the construction of Bugis identities.
