  • The researches and developments to provide multimedia communication services such as Video on Demand(VoDJ), real time video phonc and multipoint vidco conferencing on broadband ISDN environmcnts have been proceeded with activity. Specifications for Vol) services which is worked by Digital Audio-Visual Council(DAVIC) to support detail technologies including total service system that is consist of VoD server. delive[\! networl, and Set-Top Box(STB) had been already finished and ITU-T SG16 also recommended the standards of H.300 series terminal aspects for conversational multimedia services, But the architectures of multimedia tenninals recommended and specified by these organizations do not have an efficient st11lcture to provide all of retrieval, distrihution and conversational service due to a different point of view about multimedia terminals and services. In this paper, we analyzed the recornmendatio!E and the specifications of intemational public and private organizations like lTU-T, DAVIC and ATM forum. As a result of these analysis. we propose an efficient terminal architecture, and then we have designed, lmplemented the multimedia communication terminal for offering VoI) and real- time conversation ,,, functional module test according to the individual commumication service session and confirined the validiry or terminal implemented to be used on broadband ISDK environments.

Supporting Quality of Experience based on Service Level Agreement for Heterogeneous Networks

  • In this paper we propose a novel QoE control scheme based on Service Level Agreement (SLA) which enables to guarantee the user perceived service quality of various high-quality mobile multimedia services such as mobile video streaming and real-time network games to a certain level. For this purpose, a SLA control structure is adopted to provision QoE, and a novel resource management scheme gets coupled with this control structure. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme can decrease the average delay and increase the total throughput by adjusting SLA.

  • Internet telephony provides voice communication services with added flexibility for multimedia extension at a lower cost compared to traditional telephone systems. We implemented an internet telephony system as an overlay network without a centralized server, using a distributed hash table (DHT). Compared to the current server-based internet telephony system, our system is fault-tolerant, scalable, and can be flexible extended to various services and advanced to integrated service. To demonstrate the high flexibility of our DHT-based internet telephony system, we made our system cooperate with web servers. Web users can check up others' online stales and establish voice communication sessions to online users at a mouse click. This technology can be applied to more complex services such as multimedia messaging or video conference service.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient forecasting methodology of the mid and long-term frequency demand in Korea. The methodology consists of the following three steps: classification of basic service group, calculation of effective traffic, and frequency forecasting. Based on the previous studies, we classify the services into wide area mobile, short range radio, fixed wireless access and digital video broadcasting in the step of the classification of basic service group. For the calculation of effective traffic, we use the measures of erlang and bps. The step of the calculation of effective traffic classifies the user and basic application, and evaluates the effective traffic. Finally, in the step of frequency forecasting, different methodology will be proposed for each service group and its applications are presented.

  • Since Wireless Multimedia Sensor Network(WMSN) needs to process various multimedia data such as audio, image and video data as well as scalar data, it requires a mechanism that can support Quality of Service(QoS) to handle efficiently. This paper classifies traffic in WMSN as periodic monitoring traffic, event traffic, multimedia traffic and query-based traffic, proposes marking algorithm and queue management mechanism that guarantee differentiated QoS in terms of delay, energy efficiency and credibility on each traffic and conduct performance analysis with simulation.

Multi-index Prefetching Mechanism for Download-based Video on Demand Services (다운로드 기반의 주문형 비디오 서비스에서 다중 지수를 고려한 동영상 프리페칭 기법)

  • In video content watching service, when a user requests video content, the content server has to transmit the entire video to the client for watching. This transmission delay increases as the size of video content increases. In order to solve the transmission delay problem, a prefetching technique can be used in which a video content to be watched by a user is predicted and transmitted to a client before the user requests it. In this paper, we propose a prefetching system considering multiple indices for video content. In the proposed method, video content to be prefetched is selected by comprehensively analyzing the order relation index indicating the order of viewing the videos of the users, the similarity index between the video contents, and the popularity index reflecting the viewing frequency of the video content. Experimental results show that the maximum accuracy is achieved when prefetching uses only the order relation index for movie contents.

  • Currently, the development of multimedia communication has progressed so rapidly that the video program service has become a requirement for ordinary customers. The quality of experience (QoE) for the visual signal is of the fundamental importance for numerous image and video processing applications, where the goal of video quality assessment (VQA) is to automatically measure the quality of the visual signal in agreement with the human judgment of the video quality. Considering the codec effect to the video quality, in this paper an efficient non-reference (NR) VQA algorithm is proposed which estimates the video quality (VQ) only by utilizing the distorted video signal at the destination. The VQA feature vectors (FVs) which have high relationships with the subjective quality of the distorted video are investigated, and a hybrid NR VQA (HNRVQA) function is established by considering the multiple FVs. The simulation results, testing on the SDTV programming provided by VCEG Phase I, show that the proposed algorithm can represent the VQ accurately, and it can be used to replace the subjective VQA to measure the quality of the video signal automatically at the destinations.

Practical Patching for Efficient Bandwidth Sharing in VOD Systems

  • Recursive Patching is an efficient multicast technique for large-scale video on demand systems and recursively shares existing video streams with asynchronous clients. When Recursive Patching initiates a transition stream, it always makes a transition stream have additional data for the worst future request. In order to share a VOD server's limited network bandwidth efficiently, this paper proposes Practical Patching that removes the unnecessary data included in the transition stream. The proposed Practical Patching dynamically expands ongoing transition streams when a new request actually arrives at the server. As a result, the transition streams never have unnecessary data. Simulation result confirmed that the proposed technique is better than Recursive Patching in terms of service latency and defection rate.

  • 최근 인터넷의 급속한 성장과 빠른 보급, 정보통신 분야의 기술퓨전 현상들은 인터넷을 이용한 다양한 콘텐츠의 개발을 가속화시키고 있다. 특히 멀티미디어 스트리밍 기술은 일반 사용자들에게 동영상은 물곤 풍부한 멀티미디어 데이터 전송을 통하여 능동적인 대화형 서비스를 제공할 수 있는 장점들을 가지고 있다. 비디오 편집시스템은 데이터의 종류에 따라서 제안된 알고리즘과 자동/수동 분류방식을 이용하여 장면전환 검출의 정확성과 효율성을 높이고자 하였으며, 사용자의 요구에 적합한 의미 정보들을 추출하고 편집하여 내용기반 데이터베이스 시스템을 구축하고자 하였다. 또한 원격에서 웹을 통한 브라우징 서비스를 통하여 데이터베이스로부터 사용자의 요구에 능동적으로 대처할 수 있는 비디오 브라우징 서비스를 제공하고자 하였다.

Aggregated Smoothing: Considering All Streams Simultaneously for Transmission of Variable-Bit-Rate Encoded Video Objects

  • Transmission of continuous media streams has been a challenging problem of multimedia service. Lots of works have been done trying to figure out the best solution for this problem, and some works presented the optimal solution for transmitting the stored video using smoothing schemes applied to each individual stream. But those smoothing schemes considered only one stream, not the whole streams being serviced, to apply themselves, which could only achieve local optimum not the global optimum. Most of all, they did not exploit statistical multiplexing gain that can be obtained before smoothing. In this paper, we propose a new smoothing scheme that deals with not an individual stream but the whole streams being serviced simultaneously to achieve the optimal network bandwidth utilization and maximize the number of streams that can be serviced simultaneously. We formally proved that the proposed scheme not only provides deterministic QoS for each client but also maximizes number of clients that can be serviced simultaneously and hence achieves maximum utilization of transmission bandwidth.
