  • This paper presents a path planning problem for multi-robot system in the environment with dynamic obstacles. In order to guide the robots move along a collision-free path efficiently and reach the goal position quickly, a navigation method based on fuzzy logic controllers has been developed by using proximity sensors. There are two kinds of fuzzy controllers developed in this work, one is used for obstacle avoidance and the other is used for orientation to the target. Both static and dynamic obstacles are included in the environment and the dynamic obstacles are defined with no type of restriction of direction and velocity. Here, the environment is unknown for all the robots and the robots should detect the surrounding information only by the sensors installed on their bodies. The simulation results show that the proposed method has a positive effectiveness for the path planning problem.

  • In the present manufacturing environment, the appropriate decision making strategy has a significance and it should count on the fast-changing demand of customers. This research derives the optimal levels of the decision variables affecting the inventory related performance in multi-stage supply chain by using simulation and genetic algorithm. Simulation model helps analyze the customer service level of the supply chain computationally and the genetic algorithm searches the optimal solutions by interaction with the simulation model. Our experiments show that the integration approach of the genetic algorithm with a simulation model is effective in finding the solutions that achieve predefined target service levels.

  • The purpose of this study is to get preeminent data from comparative analysis of multi-family housing unit plans between Korea and China nowadays. Even though Korea and China belong to common cultured band in Asia, there are many different Housing aspects and unit plans. Through this study we want to grasp the characteristics of both nation's apartment unit plans and to contribute for advance into the China apartment market. Analysis target is constructing and lotting out apartment at South Korea and China in 2004, and the space syntax model is used as an analysis tool. First, analyze kind, number and special quality of each room by use area, and second, analyze area and scale of the rooms. Through the integration analysis we know the grade of rank and centrality of each rooms, and search difference of South Korean and Chinese apartment.

  • In this paper, a prototype of agent-based engineering system is developed based on the AADE (autonomous agent development environment), a FIPA compliant agent platform. By applying several advanced technologies including software agents, Internet/Web, workflow and database, the developed prototype system is able to successfully fulfill our target of integrating personnel, design activities and engineering resources along a predefined engineering design project (workflow). A software prototype is implemented to integrate various engineering software tools including CAD, structural analysis (FEA), dynamic analysis, fatigue analysis. A wheel-axle-assembly (part of a bogie system) is chosen as a test case for the validation of the prototype system.

  • Nowadays, large amounts of XML documents are available on the Internet. Thus, we need to analyze them multi-dimensionally in the same way as relational data. In this paper, we propose a new frame-work for multidimensional analysis of XML documents, which we call XML-OLAP. We base XML-OLAP on XML warehouses where every fact data as well as dimension data are stored as XML documents. We build XML cubes from XML warehouses. We propose a new multidimensional expression language for XML cubes, which we call XML-MDX. XML-MDX statements target XML cubes and use XQuery expressions to designate the measure data. They specify text mining operators for aggregating text constituting the measure data. We evaluate XML-OLAP by applying it to a U.S. patent XML warehouse. We use XML-MDX queries, which demonstrate that XML-OLAP is effective for multi-dimensionally analyzing the U.S. patents.

  • In this paper, multi-objective models for designing 3D trajectory of horizontal wells are developed in a fuzzy environment. Here, the objectives of minimizing the length of the trajectory and the error of entry target point are fuzzy in nature. Some parameters, such as initial value, end value, lower bound and upper bound of the curvature radius, tool-face angle and the arc length of each curve section, are also assumed to be vague and imprecise. The impreciseness in the above objectives have been expressed by fuzzy linear membership functions and that in the above parameters by triangular fuzzy numbers. Models have been solved by the fuzzy non-linear programming method based on Zimmermann [1] and Lee and Li [2]. Models are applied to practical design of the horizontal wells. Numerical results illustrate the accuracy and efficiency of the fuzzy models.

  • An on-line quality control of hot steel products is one of the important issues in the steel industry because of cost minimization. In recent years, relative depth information of surface defects is increasingly required for strict quality control. In this paper, a 3D shape reconstruction scheme for defects on a hot steel surface based on a multi-spectral photometric stereo method is proposed. After simultaneously illuminating a hot steel surface by using vertical/horizontal linearly polarized lights of green and blue light sources, the corresponding 4 images are obtained. The photometric stereo method is then applied with the aid of a GPU (Graphic Processing Unit) to reconstruct the shape of the target surface based on these images. The proposed scheme was validated through experiments.

  • This paper describes the optimal design of a multi-layered surface plasmon resonance sensors to meet various specifications and improve some physical parameters. Dip 3 dB bandwidth and depth were chosen as design parameters and the objective function was the norm of the difference between design parameters and target values. The design variables are thicknesses of each layer and to obtain the design parameters, the optical admittance method was employed. The (1+1) evolution strategy was employed as an optimization tool. By applying the proposed optimization procedure to a 3-layered sensor, the optimized design variables considerably improved the 3 dB bandwidth by 4.8 nm and the dip depth by 1.1 dB.

  • To date, cytotoxic effects of flavonoids in various cancer cells are well accepted. However, the intracellular signaling cascades triggered by these natural compounds remain largely unknown and elusive. In this mini-review, the multiplicity of molecular targets of flavonoids in blood cancer cells is discussed by demonstrating the involvement of various signaling pathways in induction of apoptotic responses. Although these data reveal a great potential of flavonoids for the development of novel agents against different types of hematological malignancies, the pleiotropic nature of these compounds in modulation of cellular processes and their interactions certainly need unraveling and further investigation.

  • A Markov-chain Monte Carlo sampling algorithm samples a new point around the latest sample due to the Markov property, which prevents it from sampling from multi-modal distributions since the corresponding chain often fails to search entire support of the target distribution. In this paper, to overcome this problem, mode switching scheme is applied to the conventional MCMC algorithms. The algorithm separates the reducible Markov chain into several mutually exclusive classes and use mode switching scheme to increase mixing rate. Simulation results are given to illustrate the algorithm with promising results.
