  • Most engineering products contain more than one component. Failure occurs either at the connection itself or in the component at the point of attachment of the connection in many engineering structures. The allocation and design of connections such as bolts, spot-welds, adhesive etc. usually play an important role in the structure of multi-components. Topology optimization of connection component provides more practical solution in design of multi-component connection system. In this study, a topology optimization based on density distribution approach has been applied to optimal location of fasteners such as T-shape, L-shape and multi-component connection system. From the results, it was verified that the number of iteration was reduced, and the optimal topology was obtained very similarly comparing with ESO method. Therefore, it can be concluded that the density distribution method is very suitable for topology optimization of multi-component structures.

  • Neural Networks(NNs) are applied for solving a wide variety of nonlinear problems in several areas, such as image processing, pattern recognition etc. Although NN can be simulated by using software, many potential NN applications required real-time processing. Thus they need to be implemented as hardware. The hardware implementation of multi-layer perceptrons(MLPs) in several kind of NNs usually uses a fixed-point arithmetic due to a simple logic operation and a shorter processing time compared to the floating-point arithmetic. However, the fixed-point arithmetic-based MLP has a drawback which is not able to apply the MLP software that use floating-point arithmetic. We propose a design method for MLPs which has the floating-point arithmetic-based fully-pipelining architecture. It has a processing speed that is proportional to the number of the hidden nodes. The number of input and output nodes of MLPs are generally constrained by given problems, but the number of hidden nodes can be optimized by user experiences. Thus our design method is using optimized number of hidden nodes in order to improve the processing speed, especially in field of a repeated processing such as image processing, pattern recognition, etc.

  • A multi-cavity injection mold system of protein chip for point-of-care with cavity temperature and pressure sensors was proposed in this work. In advance of manufacturing for the multi-cavity injection mold system, a single cavity injection mold system to mold protein chip was considered. Injection molding analysis for the presented system was performed to optimize the process of the molding and suggest guides to design. On the basis of the results for the single cavity system, a multi-cavity injection mold system for protein chip was analyzed, designed and manufactured with cavity temperature and pressure sensors. Results of balanced filling for protein chip models were obtained from the presented mold system.

  • We conducted a multi-stage optimization to secure the desired performance of a centrifugal fan for home appliance in an early stage of product development. In optimization, the static pressure at the outlet of the fan is chosen as an objective function that is to be maximized, providing the required flow rate at the operating point of the fan. The optimization procedure begins with parameters for an initial baseline fan design. The baseline design is optimized by using a commercial optimization package. Accordingly, the corresponding blade models with a set of geometrical parameters are generated. Flow through a fan is simulated by solving the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. A multi-stage optimization scheme is employed to determine the family of optimum values for the parameters, leading to the pressure increase at the outlet of the fan. To validate the numerically obtained optimal design parameters, we fabricated the three types of fans using rapid prototyping and assessed the performance using a fan tester. Experimental results show that the design parameters at each stage satisfy the goal of optimization. The multi-stage optimization process turned out to be a useful tool in the development of a centrifugal fan.

  • Both coordinated multi-point transmission and frequency reuse are effective approaches to mitigate inter-cell interference and improve network coverage. The motivation of this work is to explore the manner to effectively utilize the spectrum resource by reasonably combining cooperation and frequency reuse. The $Mat{\acute{e}}rn$ cluster process, which is appropriate to model networks with hot spots, is used to model the spatial distribution of base stations. Two cooperative mechanisms, coherent and non-coherent joint transmission (JT), are analyzed and compared. We also evaluate the effect of multiple antennas and imperfect channel state information. The simulation reveals that the proposed approach to combine cooperation and frequency reuse is effective to improve the network coverage for users located at both the center and the boundary of the cooperative region.

  • In order to improve the efficiency of the design process and the quality of the resulting design for the application-based exclusive rolling element bearings, this study propose design methodologies by using a genetic-based combinatorial optimization. By the presence of discrete variables such as the number of rolling element (standard component) and by the engineering point of views, the design problem of the rolling element bearing can be characterized by the combinatorial optimization problem as a fully discrete optimization. A genetic algorithm is used to efficiently find a set of the optimum discrete design values from the pre-defined variable sets. To effectively deal with the design constraints and the multi-objective problem, a ranking penalty method is suggested for constructing a fitness function in the genetic-based combinatorial optimization. To evaluate the proposed design method, a robust performance analyzer of ball bearing based on quasi-static analysis is developed and the computer program is applied to some design problems, 1) maximize fatigue life, 2) maximize stiffness, 3) maximize fatigue life and stiffness, of a angular contact ball bearing. Optimum design results are demonstrate the effectiveness of the design method suggested in this study. It believed that the proposed methodologies can be effectively applied to other multi-objective discrete optimization problems.

  • The airfoil design optimization procedures based on the Navier-Stokes equations were developed, This procedure enables more realistic and practical transonic airfoil designs. The modified Hicks-Henne functions were used to generate the shape of airfoils. Five Hick-Henne functions were used to design upper surface of airfoil only. To enhance the ability of Hick-Henne function to generate various airfoil shape with limited number of functions, the positions of control points were adjusted through optimization procedure. The design procedure was applied to the single-point design for the drag minimization problem with lift and area constraints. The result shows the capability of the procedure to generate much realistic airfoils with very small drag-creep in the low transonic regime. This is mainly due to the viscosity effect of Navier-Stokes flow analysis. However, in the higher transonic range tile drag-creep appears. The multi-point design is shown to be an effective way to avoid the drag-creep and improve off-design performance which is very similar in the Euler design.
