  • In this study we develop a set of solar proton event (SPE) forecast models with NOAA scales by Multi Layer Perceptron (MLP), one of neural network methods, using GOES solar X-ray flare data from 1976 to 2011. Our MLP models are the first attempt to forecast the SPE scales by the neural network method. The combinations of X-ray flare class, impulsive time, and location are used for input data. For this study we make a number of trials by changing the number of layers and nodes as well as combinations of the input data. To find the best model, we use the summation of F-scores weighted by SPE scales, where F-score is the harmonic mean of PODy (recall) and precision (positive predictive value), in order to minimize both misses and false alarms. We find that the MLP models are much better than the multiple linear regression model and one layer MLP model gives the best result.

  • In this paper, a Novel Approach is Proposed which Identifies linear system Parameters Using a multilayer feedforward neural network trained with backpropagation algorithm. The parameters of linear system can be represented by x9t)/x(t) and x(t)/u(t). Thud, its parameters can be represented in terms of the derivative of output with respect to input of parameters can be represented in terms of the derivative of output with respect to input of trained neural network which is a function of weights and output of neurons. Mathematical representation of the proposed approach is derived, and its validity is shown by simulation results on 2-layer and 3-layer neural network.

  • The objective of this study is to develop a reliable flow forecasting model based on neural network algorithm in order to provide flow rate at stream sections without flow measurement in Nakdong river. Stream flow rate measured at 8-days interval by Nakdong river environment research center, daily upper dam discharge and precipitation data connecting upstream stage gauge were used in this development. Back propagation neural network and multi-layer with hidden layer that exists between input and output layer are used in model learning and constructing, respectively. Model calibration and verification is conducted based on observed data from 3 station in Nakdong river.

  • In this paper, the water quality forecast was performed on the BOD of the Chungju Dam using the ARIMA model, which is a nonlinear statistics model, and the artificial neural network model. The monthly data of water quality were collected from 1991 to 2000. The most appropriate ARIMA model for Chungju dam was found to be the multiplicative seasonal ARIMA(1,0,1)(1,0,1)$_{12}$, model. While the artificial neural network model, which is used relatively often in recent days, forecasts new data by the strength of a learned matrix like human neurons. The BOD values were forecasted using the back-propagation algorithm of multi-layer perceptrons in this paper. Artificial neural network model was com- posed of two hidden layers and the node number of each hidden layer was designed fifteen. It was demonstrated that the ARIMA model was more appropriate in terms of changes around the overall average, but the artificial neural net-work model was more appropriate in terms of reflecting the minimum and the maximum values.s.

  • In this paper we proposed a heterogeneous hidden layer consisting of both sigmoid functions and RBFs(Radial Basis Function) in multi-layered neural networks. Focusing on the orthogonal relationship between the sigmoid function and its derivative, a derived RBF that is a derivative of the sigmoid function is used as the RBF in the neural network. so the proposed neural network is called ONN's feasibility Neural Network). Identification results using a nonlinear. function confirm both the ONN's feasibility and characteristics by comparing with those obtained using a conventional neural network which has sigmoid function or RBF in hidden layer.

  • When a neural network is used to solve a given problem it is necessary to match the complexity of the network to that of the problem because the complexity of the network significantly affects its learning capability and generalization performance. Thus, it is desirable to have an algorithm that can find appropriate network structures in a self-organizing way. This paper proposes algorithms which automatically organize feed forward multi-layer neural networks with sigmoid hidden neurons for given problems. Using both constructive procedures and pruning procedures, the proposed algorithms try to find the near optimal network, which is compact and shows good generalization performance. The performances of the proposed algorithms are tested on four function regression problems. The results demonstrate that our algorithms successfully generate near-optimal networks in comparison with the previous method and the neural networks of fixed topology.

  • Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a kind of nondestructive testing technique that obtains the internal resistivity distribution from the voltages measured at the electrodes located outside the area of interest. However, an image reconstruction problem in EIT has innate non-linearity and ill-posedness, so that it is difficult to obtain satisfactory reconstructed results. In general, a neural network can efficiently model the input and output relationships of a non-linear system. This paper proposes a method for estimating the position and size of a circular target using a multi-layer neural network. To verify the performance of the proposed method, neural network was trained and various computer simulations were performed and satisfactory performance was verified.

  • In GMAW, the spatters are generated according to the variation of the arc. Of the arc is stable, Few spatters are generated. But if unstable, too many spatters are generated. So, this means the spatters are dependent on the arc state. The aim of this study is to accurately estimate the arc state. To do this, the generated spatters were captured under the some welding conditions, and the waveforms of the arc voltage and welding current were collected. From the collected signals, the waveform factors and their standard deviations were extracted. Using these factors as input parameters of multi-layer artificial neural network, the learning for the weight of the generated spatters is performed and the estimation results to the real spatter are assessed. Obtained results are as follow: the linear correlation coefficient between the estimated result and the real spatters was 0.9986. And although the average convergence error was set 0.002, the estimated error to the real spatter was within 0.1 gr/min at each welding condition. In the estimation for the weight generated spatters, the result with multi-layer neural network was far better than with multiple regression analysis. Especially, even though under the welding condition which the arc state is unstable (the spatter is generated much more), very excellent estimation performance was shown.

  • The multi-layer neural network that has broadly been utilized in designing the controller of robot manipulator possesses the desirable characteristics of learning capacity, by which the uncertain variation of the dynamic parameters of robot can be handled adaptively, and parallel distributed processing that makes it possible to control on real-time. However the error back propagation algorithm that has been utilized popularly in the learning of the multi-layer neural network has the problem of its slow convergence speed. In this paper, an approach to improve the convergence speed is proposed using the fuzzy logic that can effectively handle the uncertain and fuzzy informations by linguistic level. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated by computer simulation of PUMA 560 robot manupulator.

  • This Paper describes a Nonlinear adoptive noise canceller using Neural Network for Machine Tools Controller System. Back-Propagation Learning Algorithm based MLP (Multi Layer Perceptron)is used an adaptive filters. In this Paper. it assume that the noise of primary input in the adaptive noise canceller is not the same characteristic as that of the reference input. Experimental results show that the neural network base noise canceller outperforms the linear noise canceller. Especially to make noise cancel close to realtime, Primary Input is divided by Unit and each divided pan is processed for very short time than all the processed data are unified to whole data.
