  • A new method is proposed to obtain bond-slip model for an adhesive joint between FRP and concrete. Interface element, which can describe the bond behavior, is developed in order to overcome the restriction that complex constitutive relations cannot be modeled in analytic solution. Calibrating numerical bond-slip model to experimental results, multi-objective optimization problem is constructed by physical programming method, and is solved using genetic algorithm. The validity of proposed method is demonstrated by comparing known analytic solution and numerically optimized solution.

  • A dynamic analysis of a horseshoe_shaped tunnel near to cavity was performed to study the effect of the cavity on the dynamic behavior of the tunnel. In order to obtain the dynamic response of the tunnel embedded in a semi-infinite domain, a hybrid numerical technique was primarily developed. A dynamic fundamental solution in frequency domain for multi-layered half planes was derived and subsequently incorporated in the boundary element method. Coupling of the boundary element method for the far field with the finite element method for the near field is made by imposing compatibility condition of a displacement at the interface. The boundary element method is then coupled with the finite element method, which is utilized to model the near field including the tunnel and the cavity. In order to demonstrate the validity of the proposed technique, dynamic responses of single and multiply-layered semi-infinite structural systems are obtained by using the Kicker waveform and investigated in the limestone layer to find how the being and the location of the cavity affect the dynamic characteristics of the system.

  • This work presents a numerical modeling procedure to simulate the refractory concrete lining in fluid catalytic cracking units of oil refineries. The model includes the simulation of the anchors that reinforce the contact between the refractory concrete and the steel casing. For this purpose, the constitutive relations of an interface finite element are set to values that represent the homogenized behavior of the anchored interface. The parameters of this constitutive relation can be obtained by experimental tests. The model includes also multi-surface plasticity, in order to represent the behavior of the refractory concrete lining. Since the complexity of real case applications leads to high computational costs, the models presented here were implemented in a high-performance parallelized finite element platform. A case study representing a riser similar to the ones used by the refinery industry demonstrates the potential of the model.

  • This paper is addressed to a design and implementation of Korean voice web browser using voice technologies for controling web browser and selecting contents in the web document, and converting them to voice after HTML analysis. Main feature of this web browser is universal design which considers both of normal person and visual disabled, allows multi-modal interface. As voice interface for visual disabled, it supports tree structure which allows to recognize web document structure easily by only voice guidance regardless of frame usage, can handle all elements described as tag in the web document, identify them as predefined different voice property according to element property. This method gets rid of additional guidance voice for element property without audio style sheet or additional programming effort.

  • A time domain method is presented for soil-structure interaction analysis under seismic excitations. It is based on the finite element formulation incorporating infinite elements for the far field soil region. Equivalent earthquake input forces are calculated based on the free field responses along the interface between the near and far field soil regions utilizing the fixed exterior boundary method in the frequency domain. Then, the input forces are transformed into the time domain by using inverse Fourier transform. The dynamic stiffness matrices of the far field soil region formulated using the analytical frequency-dependent infinite elements in the frequency domain can be easily transformed into the corresponding matrices in the time domain. Hence, the response can be analytically computed in the time domain. A recursive procedure is proposed to compute the interaction forces along the interface and the responses of the soil-structure system in the time domain. Earthquake response analyses have been carried out on a multi-layered half-space and a tunnel embedded in a layered half-space with the assumption of the linearity of the near and far field soil region, and results are compared with those obtained by the conventional method in the frequency domain.

  • The multimedia visualizational spreadsheet environment is shown to be extremely effective in supporting the organized visualization of multi-dimensional data sets. In this paper, we designed the visualization model that consists of the configurational 2D arrangement of spreadsheet elements at run time and each spreadsheet element has a novel framestack. As the feature, it supports 3D data structure of each element on the proposed model. It enables the visualization spreadsheet 1) to effectively manage, organize, and compactly encapsulate multi-dimensional data sets, 2) to reconfigure cell-structures dynamically according to client request, and 3) to rapidly process interactive user interface. Using several experiments with scientific users, the model has been demonstrated to be a highly interactive visual browsing tool for 2D and 3D graphics and rendering in each frame.

  • A static/implicit finite element code for sheet forming (ITAS3D) is parallelized on IBM SP 6000 multi-processor computer. Computing-load-balanced domain decomposition method and the direct solution method at each subdomain (and interface) equation are developed. The system of equations for each subdomain are constructed by condensation and calculated on each processor. Approximated operation counts are calculated to set up the nonlinear equation system for balancing the compute load on each subdomain. Th esquare cup tests with several numbers of elements are used in demonstrating the performance of this parallel implementation. This procedure are proved to be efficient for moderate number of processors, especially for large number of elements.

  • The propose of this study analyze an expression method of a surface in commercial buildings, and it is to show an example of a surface design in Manhattan. In particular, I focus on the following three categories : representation element of surface image : materials and structure method, the property of transparency, and an electronic surface and media screen. Unlike the past era in which surface design in commercial buildings was viewed just as a mean ornament, it has become more important in the presently era because diverse expression technologies in surface design makes architects express there creative ideas. Besides, the diversity of surface design expands the concept of cultural space as it provides various graphic element that human desire for multi-cultures. So diversity of surface will accelerate.

  • Three-dimensional graphic objects created by MATLAB are exported to the AUTOCAD program through the MATLAB handle functions. The imported SAT format files are used to produce the finite element mesh for MSC.PATRAN. Based on the Monte-Carlo random sample principle, the material heterogeneity of cement composites with randomly distributed fibers is described by the WEIBULL distribution function. In this paper, a concept called "soft region" including micro-defects, micro-voids, etc. is put forward for the simulation of crack propagation in fiber-reinforced cement composites. The performance of the numerical model is demonstrated by several examples involving crack initiation and growth in the composites under three-dimensional stress conditions: tensile loading; compressive loading and crack growth along a bimaterial interface.

  • A pre/post processor program based GUI(Graphic User Interface) by using the MFC and OpenGL library in the Windows OS have been developed for the analysis of the passenger flow. Using this program, users are able to generate and modify the meshes of multi-storied subway station, set all the parameters for the solver, and obtain the results of the simulation such as transient passenger motions and passenger streak lines in 3-dimensional graphic view.
