  • We develop a preliminary design optimization procedure in this paper regarding the wing planform in a solar-powered high-altitude long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle. A high-aspect-ratio wing has been widely adopted in this type of a vehicle, due to both the high lift-to-drag ratio and lightweight design. In the preliminary design, its characteristics need to be addressed correctly, and analyzed in an appropriate manner. In this paper, we use the three-dimensional Euler equation to analyze the wing aerodynamics. We also use an advanced structural modeling approach based on a geometrically exact one-dimensional beam analysis. Regarding the structural integrity of the wing, we determine detailed configuration parameters, specifically the taper ratio and the span length. Next, we conduct a multi-objective optimization scheme based on the response surface method, using the present baseline configuration. We consider the structural integrity as one of the constraints. We reduce the wing weight by approximately 25.3 % from that in the baseline configuration, and also decrease the power required approximately 3.4 %. We confirm that the optimized wing has sufficient flutter margin and improved static longitudinal/directional stability characteristics, as compared to those of the baseline configuration.

  • In this paper, a 3-dimensional multi-layer current simulation program is allied to real shore area near Inchon harbor with highly irregular bottom and continental geometry. The effects of bottom topography on vertical structures of the ocean tidal current is investigated through comparing the calculated results by 2-dimensional depth averaged approach and the present method. Wind induced current, which may be more dominant factor in Predicting oil spill behavior, is also simulated by the present computation algorithm. Comparison shows quite large differences not only in vertical distribution of the current but also in the direction of the surface current.

  • When a large ship is advancing in waves, ship undergoes the hydroelastic response, and this have influence on structural stability and the fatigue destruction etc. of ship. The main objective of this research is to develop an accurate and convenient method on the hydroelastic response analysis of ships on the real sea states. We analyzed hydroelastic responses, which is formulated by finite element method. The numerical approach for the hydroelastic responses is based on the combination of the three dimensional source distribution method, the dynamic response analysis and the spectral analysis method. The calculated results show good agreement with the experimental and calculated ones by Watanabe.

  • To verify applicability of multi-dimensional spectral analysis (MDSA) fur noise source identification two different approaches which are frequency response and coherent function have been investigated. The coherence function approach appears able to separate the correlated system when the noise sources were coherent. In this study, we identify contribution of structure-borne-noise of vehicle HVAC system using MDSA method. Firstly, to identify the applicability of MDSA method, 4-inputs of vehicle HVAC system were the signals measured by accelerometers attached on the selected noise sources which were composed of blower, evaporator, heater and duct. While 1-output which was driver's position sound was the SPL signals measured by a remote microphone, when the blower motor was operating. We identify efficiency of systems modeled with four Inputs/single output through ordinary coherence function (OCF) and partial coherence function (PCF). As a result of experiment, the blower accounted for $62-88\%$ of the overall level of sound energy density. Also, according to the analysis of acoustic signal and vibration signals measurement, an investigation of the noise source identification in the vehicle HVAC is presented. With the sound intensity method, the major sources of the vehicle HVAC radiation are verified. Also the method of improving the noise reduction is proposed by attaching damping patch access to blower motor and noise reduction is verified.

  • The role of cost modeller is to facilitate the design process by systematic application of cost factors so as to maintain a sensible and economic relationship between cost, quantity, utility and appearance which thus helps in achieving the client's requirements within an agreed budget. There are a number of research on cost estimates in the early design stage based on the improvement of accuracy or impact factors. It is common knowledge that cost estimates are undertaken progressively throughout the design stage and make use of the information that is available at each phase, through the related research up to now. In addition, Cost estimates in the early design stage shall analyze the information under the various kinds of precondition before reaching the more developed design because a design can be modified and changed in all process depending on clients' requirements. Parametric cost estimating models have been adopted to support decision making in a changeable environment, in the early design stage. These models are using a similar instance or a pattern of historical case to be constituted in project information, geographic design features, relevant data to quantity or cost, etc. OLAP technique analyzes a subject data by multi-dimensional points of view; it supports query, analysis, comparison of required information by diverse queries. OLAP's data structure matches well with multiview-analysis framework. Accordingly, this study implements multi-dimensional information system for case based quantity data related to design information that is utilizing OLAP's technology, and then analyzes impact factors of quantity by the design criteria or parameter of the same meaning. On the basis of given factors examined above, this study will generate the rules on quantity measure and produce resemblance class using clustering of data mining. These sorts of knowledge-base consist of a set of classified data as group patterns, of which will be appropriate stand on the parametric cost estimating method.

  • With the high design freedom of the additive manufacturing process, there is a growing interest in multi-dimensional lattice structures among researchers, who are studying intricate structural modeling that is challenging to produce using conventional manufacturing processes. In the case of titanium alloy implants for human insertion, a multi-dimensional lattice structure is employed to ensure compatibility with bones, adjusting strength and elastic modulus to levels similar to those of bones. Therefore, securing a database on the mechanical properties based on lattice structure design variables and the development of related simulation techniques are believed to efficiently facilitate the customization of implants. In this study, lattice structures were additively manufactured using Ti-6Al-4V alloy, and the elastic modulus was measured based on design parameters. The results were compared with simulations, and an approach to finite element analysis for accurate prediction of the elastic modulus was proposed.

  • This work presents numerical optimization for design of a blade stacking line of a low speed axial flow fan with a fast and elitist Non-Dominated Sorting of Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II) of multi-objective optimization using three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model are discretized with finite volume approximations and solved on unstructured grids. Regression analysis is performed to get second order polynomial response which is used to generate Pareto optimal front with help of NSGA-II and local search strategy with weighted sum approach to refine the result obtained by NSGA-II to get better Pareto optimal front. Four geometric variables related to spanwise distributions of sweep and lean of blade stacking line are chosen as design variables to find higher performed fan blade. The performance is measured in terms of the objectives; total efficiency, total pressure and torque. Hence the motive of the optimization is to enhance total efficiency and total pressure and to reduce torque.
