Composite material-due to low density-causes weight savings, which results in lower fuel consumption of transport vehicles. The aim of the research was to change the existing base-plate of the aluminum airplane container with the composite sandwich plate in order to reduce the weight of the containers of cargo aircrafts. The newly constructed sandwich plate consists of aluminum honeycomb core and composite face-sheets. The face-sheets consist of glass or carbon or hybrid fiber layers. The orientations of the fibers in the face-sheets were 0°, 90° and ±45°. Multi-objective optimization method was elaborated for the newly constructed sandwich plates. Based on the design aim, the importance of the objective functions (weight and cost of sandwich plates) was the same (50%). During the optimization nine design constraints were considered: stiffness, deflection, facing stress, core shear stress, skin stress, plate buckling, shear crimping, skin wrinkling, intracell buckling. The design variables were core thickness and number of layers of the face-sheets. During the optimization both the Weighted Normalized Method of the Excel Solver and the Genetic Algorithm Solver of Matlab software were applied. The mechanical properties of composite face-sheets were calculated by Laminator software according to the Classical Lamination Plate Theory and Tsai-Hill failure criteria. The main added-value of the study is that the multi-objective optimization method was elaborated for the newly constructed sandwich structures. It was confirmed that the optimal new composite sandwich construction-due to weight savings and lower fuel consumption of cargo aircrafts - is more advantageous than conventional all-aluminum container.
This paper proposes a hybrid heuristic and criteria-based method of optimum design which combines the advantages of both the iterated simulated annealing (SA) algorithm and the rigorously derived optimality criteria (OC) for structural optimum design of reinforced concrete (RC) buildings under multi-load cases based on the current Chinese design codes. The entire optimum design procedure is divided into two parts: strength optimum design and stiffness optimum design. A modified SA with the strategy of adaptive feasible region is proposed to perform the discrete optimization of RC frame structures under the strength constraints. The optimum stiffness design is conducted using OC method with the optimum results of strength optimum design as the lower bounds of member size. The proposed method is integrated into the commercial software packages for building structural design, SATWE, and for finite element analysis, ANSYS, for practical applications. Finally, two practical frame-shear-wall structures (15-story and 30-story) are optimized to illustrate the effectiveness and practicality of the proposed optimum design method.

An effective dexterous motion control method of redundant robot manipulators based on neural optimization network is proposed to satisfy multi-criteria such as singularity avoidance, minimizing energy consumption, and avoiding physical limits of actuator, while performing a given task. The method employs a neural optimization network with parallel processing capability, where only a simple geometric analysis for resolved motion of each joint is required instead of computing of the Jacobian and its pseudo inverse matrix. For dexterous motion, a joint geometric manipulability measure(JGMM) is proposed. JGMM evaluates a contribution of each joint differential motion in enlarging the length of the shortest axis among principal axes of the manipulability ellipsoid volume approximately obtained by a geometric analysis. Redundant robot manipulators is then controlled by neural optimization networks in such a way that 1) linear combination of the resolved motion by each joint differential motion should be equal to the desired velocity, 2) physical limits of joints are not violated, and 3) weighted sum of the square of each differential joint motion is minimized where weightings are adjusted by JGMM. To show the validity of the proposed method, several numerical examples are illustrated.

Recently, the issue of ship nitration due to the large scale, high speed and lightweight of ship is emerging. For pleasantness in the cabin, shipbuilders are asked for strict vibration criteria and the degree of nitration level at a deckhouse became an important condition for taking order from customers. This study proposes a new optimization framework that is NASTRAN external call type optimization method (OptShip) and applies to an optimum design to decrease the nitration level of a deckhouse. The merits of this method are capable of using of global searching method and selecting of various objective function and design variables. The global optimization algorithms used here are random tabu search method which has fast converging speed and searches various size domains and genetic algorithm which searches multi-point solutions and has a good search capability in a complex space. By adapting OptShip to full-scale model, the validity of the suggested method was investigated.

This paper demonstrates the application of a Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and Zero-One Goal Programming model for selecting interdependent information system project selection, there are a few research for interdependent IS project selection. Effective project evaluation necessities incorporating the many conflicting objectives of decision maker(s) into decision models. Among the many proposed methodologies of multi-criteria decision making (MCDM), Goal Programming (GP) is the most popular and widely used. The model departs from an earlier GP formulation of the problem that suggested QFD method for selection of priorities among the considered attributes or criteria. The application of the proposed methodology illustrated through an example.

This work deals with the kinematic and dynamic optimal design of a six degree-of-freedom Stewart Platform mechanism, which is actuated by six prismatic cylinfers. Composite design index is employed to deal with multi-criteria based design in a systematic manner, and a sequential design method is suggested, in which the results from the kinematic optimization are employed in the following dynamic optimization.

Placement of multiple dies on an MCM or high-performance VLSI substrate is a non-trivial task in which multiple criteria need to be considered simultaneously to obtain a true multi-objective optimization. Unfortunately, the exact physical attributes of a design are not known in the placement step until entire design process is carried out. When the performance issues are considered, crosstalk noise constraints in the form of net separation and via constraint become important. In this paper, for better performance and wirability estimation during placement for MCMs, several performance constraints are taken into account simultaneously. A graph-based wirability estimation along with the Genetic placement optimization technique is proposed to minimize crosstalk, crossing, wirelength and the number of layers. Our work is significant since it is the first attempt at bringing the crosstalk and other performance issues into the placement domain.
A method to determine functional relationships between the variable physical dimensions of an antenna and the antenna performance characteristics is presented. By applying multi-expression programming (MEP) to this data set, optimization with regard to a given criteria can be subsequently performed on the functions instead of performing repealed electromagnetic simulations. The functionals are trained on an initial population of simulation samples and refined using a point-wise error estimate to identify design parameters for subsequent samples. Additionally, the depth of the MEP tree is adjusted for increased accuracy as the data set is deemed sufficient.

The main objective of this study is to develop a multi-objective fuzzy optimum design program of steel structures and to verify that the multi-objective fuzzy optimum design is more reasonable than the single objective optimum design in real structural design. In the optimization formulation, the objective functions are both total weight and deflection. The design constraints are derived from the ultimate strength of service ability requirement of AISC-LRFD specification. The structural analysis was performed by the finite element method and also considered geometric non-linearity. The different importance of optimum criteria were reflected with two weighting methods ; membership weighting method and objective weighting method. Thus, designers could choose rational optimum solution of structures with application of two weighting methods.
Optimization of production system of polyester manufacturing companies is an important task for strengthening the competitiveness of the domestic polyester industry. The purpose of this study is to present a way to evaluate the goodness of the polyester manufacturing systems determined by the combinations of production facilities and to derive the optimal configuration of the production system. To this end, the criteria or factors for the evaluating polyester production system were derived and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used. Using the AHP model, we derived weights on the criteria for evaluating polyester production system and drew priorities for the configurations of the production systems under consideration.
