  • In this paper, we derive analytical expressions for the exact pairwise error probability (PEP) of a space-time coded system operating over spatially correlated fast (constant over the duration of a symbol) and slow (constant over the length of a code word) fading channels using a moment-generating function-based approach. We discuss two analytical techniques that can be used to evaluate the exact-PEPs (and therefore, approximate the average bit error probability (BEP)) in closed form. These analytical expressions are more realistic than previously published PEP expressions as they fully account for antenna spacing, antenna geometries (uniform linear array, uniform grid array, uniform circular array, etc.) and scattering models (uniform, Gaussian, Laplacian, Von-mises, etc.). Inclusion of spatial information in these expressions provides valuable insights into the physical factors determining the performance of a space-time code. Using these new PEP expressions, we investigate the effect of antenna spacing, antenna geometries and azimuth power distribution parameters (angle of arrival/departure and angular spread) on the performance of a four-state QPSK space-time trellis code proposed by Tarokh et al. for two transmit antennas.

  • We present a performance improvement of Binary CDMA by flattening the correlation values. A Binary CDMA system, in which multi-leveled transmission signal of multi-code CDMA is clipped into a binary value, is cost-efficient since the strict linearity of the power amplifier is relieved. However, a loss of orthogonality among user channels due to the clipping causes the correlation values at the receiver to have a random distribution. If the correlation value for even a single channel goes too low, the average BER drops considerably. We developed a method of correlation flattening, where the binary chip pattern at the transmitter is adjusted so that the correlation values have averaged magnitude. Experimental results on several spreading codes show that the correlation flattening method increases the number of available channels at reduced BER.

  • As the computing environment is rapidly improved, the interests of CFD are gradually focused on large-scale computation over complex geometry. Keeping pace with the trend, essential computational tools to obtain solutions of complex aerospace flow analysis and design problems are examined. An accurate and efficient flow analysis and design codes for large-scale aerospace problem are presented in this work. With regard to original numerical schemes for flow analysis, high-fidelity flux schemes such as RoeM, AUSMPW+ and higher order interpolation schemes such as MLP (Multi-dimensional Limiting Process) are presented. Concerning the grid representation method, a general-purpose basis code which can handle multi-block system and overset grid system simultaneously is constructed. In respect to design optimization, the importance of turbulent sensitivity is investigated. And design tools to predict highly turbulent flows and its sensitivity accurately by fully differentiating turbulent transport equations are presented. Especially, a new sensitivity analysis treatment and geometric representation method to resolve the basic flow characteristics are presented. Exploiting these tools, the capability of the proposed approach to handle complex aerospace simulation and design problems is tested by computing several flow analysis and design problems.

  • This study has been undertaken as a basic research for automatic pattern design for baseball uniforms manufactured under custom-MTM system, propose building up of a system whereby various partial patterns are combined under an automatic design system and develop a multi-combination type pattern searching algorithm which allows development of a various designs. As a result of this, type classification based on pattern design elements includes side, open, collar, facing and panel type. Design have been divided into coarse classification ranging from level 1 to 7 according to pattern design elements, based on a design distribution chart. Out of 7 such levels, 3 major types determining design which are, more specifically, level 1 sleeve type, level 2 open type and level 3 collar type, have been taken and combined to determine a total of 12 types to be used for design classification codes. Respective name of style and patterns have been coded using alphabet and numerals. Totally, pattern searching algorithm of multi-combination type has been developed whereby combination of patterns belonging to a specific style can be retrieved automatically once that style name is designated on the automatic pattern design system.

  • This paper provides an introduction to life-span simulation and numerical approach to support the performance design processes of reinforced concrete structures. An integrated computational system is proposed for life-span simulation of reinforced concrete. Conservation of moisture, carbon dioxide, oxygen, chloride, calcium and momentum is solved with hydration, carbonation, corrosion, ion dissolution. damage evolution and their thermodynamic/mechanical equilibrium. Coupled analysis of mass transport and damage mechanics associated with steel corrosion is presented for structural performance assessment of reinforced concrete. Multi-scale modeling of micro-pore formation and transport phenomena of moisture and ions are mutually linked for predicting the corrosion of reinforcement and volumetric changes. The interaction of crack propagation with corroded gel migration can also be simulated. Two finite element codes. multi-chemo physical simulation code (DuCOM) and nonlinear dynamic code of structural reinforced concrete (COM3) were combined together to form the integrated simulation system. This computational system was verified by the laboratory scale and large scale experiments of damaged reinforced concrete members under static loads, and has been applied to safety and serviceability assessment of existing structures. Based on the damage details predicted by the nonlinear finite element analytical system, the life-span-cost of RC structures including the original construction costs and the repairing costs for possible damage during the service life can be evaluated for design purpose.

  • A new space-time cooperative communication relaying strategy with assistant or management terminals is proposed in multi-hop wireless communication systems. More than one relaying terminals are included in one cooperative group to share the state information such as frame error rate and channel information. Among the cooperative group, the best ones are selected to send bit information using space-time codes. An implementation for the proposed scheme is also presented using a TDMA cooperative protocol. Receive signal to transmit signal ratio($E_r/E_s$) and computer simulation show the strategy outperform the conventional cooperative system.

  • Seismic resiliency of new buildings has improved over the years due to better seismic codes and design practices. However, there is still large number of vulnerable and seismically deficient buildings. It is not economically feasible to retrofit and upgrade all vulnerable buildings, thus there is a need for rapid screening tool. Many factors contribute to the damageability of buildings; this makes seismic evaluation a complex multi-criteria decision making problem. Many of these factors are noncommensurable and involve subjectivity in evaluation that highlights the use of fuzzy-based method. In this paper, a risk-based framework earlier proposed by Tesfamariam and Saatcioglu (2008a) is extended using Fuzzy-TOPSIS method and applied to develop an evaluation and ranking scheme for steel buildings. The ranking is based on damageability that can help decision makers interpret the results and take appropriate decision actions. Finally, the application of conceptual model is demonstrated through a case study of 1994 Northridge earthquake data on seismic damage of steel buildings.

  • Self-encoded multiple access (SEMA) is a unique realization of random spread spectrum. As the term implies, the spreading code is obtained from the random digital information source instead of the traditional pseudo noise (PN) code generators. The time-varying random codes can provide additional security in wireless communications. Multi-rate transmissions or multi-level grade of services are also easily implementable in SEMA. In this paper, we analyze the performance of SEMA in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels and Rayleigh fading channels. Differential encoding eliminates the BER effect of error propagations due to receiver detection errors. The performance of SEMA approaches the random spread spectrum discussed in literature at high signal to noise ratios. For performance improvement, we employ multiuser detection and Turbo coding. We consider a downlink synchronous system such as base station to mobile communication though the analysis can be extended to uplink communications.

  • A new modulation scheme called multicoded-pulse position modulation (MC-PPM) is proposed for an ultrawideband (UWB) impulse radio communication system. The multicoded signal is generated by using several orthogonal codes for transmitting data simultaneously. Then, each multi-level value of the multicoded signal is converted to pulse position which results in not only an improved data rate, but also a processing gain in reception, delivering the power-efficient benefit of PPM and guaranteeing the low pulse energy for UWB systems. We notice that the modulation of multi-level values of the multicoded signal to pulse position is more efficient in terms of achievable data rate than the modulation of transmitting data based on other PPM schemes within given bandwidth and pulse energy. Therefore, as a performance measure, we focus on the achievable data rate (link capacity) of the proposed scheme and analyze it theoretically. Through simulation, we compare the link capacity of the MC-PPM scheme and other PPM schemes, such as M -ary PPM and multiple PPM. With the fixed bandwidth and same pulse energy condition, the UWB system based on the proposed MC-PPM scheme shows good link capacity and an increased data rate as L increases, which is contrary to other PPM schemes.
