Development of dynamic motion models of SPACE code for ocean nuclear reactor analysis

  • Lately, ocean nuclear power plants have attracted attention as one of diverse uses of nuclear power plants. Because ocean nuclear power plants are movable or transportable, it is necessary to analyze the thermal hydraulics in a moving frame of reference, and computer codes have been developed to predict thermal hydraulics in large moving systems. The purpose of this study is to incorporate a three dimensional dynamic motion model into the SPACE code (Safety and Performance Analysis CodE) so that the code is able to analyze thermal hydraulics in an ocean nuclear power plant. A rotation system that describes three-dimensional rotations about an arbitrary axis was implemented, and modifications were made to the one-dimensional momentum equations to reflect the rectilinear and rotational acceleration effects. To demonstrate the code's ability to solve a problem utilizing a rotational frame of reference, code calculations were conducted on various conceptual problems in the two-dimensional and three-dimensional pipeline loops. In particular, the code results for the three-dimensional pipeline loop with a tilted rotation axis agreed well with the multi-dimensional CFD results.

  • Holographic data storage system is affected by two dimensional intersymbol interference and inter-page interference. Especially, for multi-level holographic data storage system, since one pixel contains more than 1 bit, the system is more vulnerable to the error. In this paper, we propose a 2/3 modulation code for 4-level holographic data storage system. The proposed modulation code with error correcting capability could be compensated these interferences. Also, in this paper, we proposed a Viterbi decoder for 2/3 modulation code. The proposed Viterbi decoder eliminates unnecessary calculation. As a result, proposed 2/3 modulation code and Viterbi decoder has shown better performance than conventional one.

  • We present an innovative means of numerically treating interfaces associated with chemically active energetic materials. Recent advances in wave tracking technique based on the Ghost Fluid Concept is extended to handle multi-material multi-phase interfaces associated with chemical environment associated with explosion. We show several work-in-progress applications of our code, including the impact problems involving both energetic and inert elements. Accurate modeling of the equation of state and the constitutive relations are also discussed

  • The crest factor properties of 16-QAM modulated one- and two-code assisted multi-carrier code-division multiple-access (MC-CDMA) signals employing complementary pair as spreading sequences are characterized. It is shown that a set of relationship between the two 16-QAM symbols entirely characterize the power envelope waveforms of the signals. There exists 60 different sets of relationship, which results in 16 different crest factors as a result of various equivalent transforms on the corresponding message symbols. It is also shown that the individual crest factor corresponding to each message combination is always bounded by 3dB.

  • In this paper, we derive analytical expressions for the exact pairwise error probability (PEP) of a space-time coded system operating over spatially correlated fast (constant over the duration of a symbol) and slow (constant over the length of a code word) fad­ing channels using a moment-generating function-based approach. We discuss two analytical techniques that can be used to evaluate the exact-PEPs (and therefore, approximate the average bit error probability (BEP)) in closed form. These analytical expressions are more realistic than previously published PEP expressions as they fully account for antenna spacing, antenna geometries (uniform linear array, uniform grid array, uniform circular array, etc.) and scattering models (uniform, Gaussian, Laplacian, Von-mises, etc.). Inclusion of spatial information in these expressions provides valuable insights into the physical factors determining the performance of a space-time code. Using these new PEP expressions, we investigate the effect of antenna spacing, antenna geometries and azimuth power distribution parameters (angle of arrival/departure and angular spread) on the performance of a four-state QPSK space-time trellis code proposed by Tarokh et al. for two transmit antennas.

However, it has several problems such as inter-symbol interference, inter-page interference and misalignment. Especially, for multi-level holographic data storage system, since one pixel contains more than 1bit, the system is more vulnerable to the error. In this paper, we propose a 3/4 modulation code which mitigate inter-symbol interference for 4-level holographic data storage.

  • Holographic data storage (HDS) features short access times, high storage capacities, and fast transfer rates since the data is recorded and read not by lines but by pages within a volume of holographic material. Furthermore, a single pixel can store more than 1 bit if it is multi-level. However, there is a problem of inter-symbol interference (ISI) between the adjacent symbols if the level difference between neighboring symbols is large. Hence, one should avoid side by side placement of the smallest level symbol and the largest level symbol in any direction. This paper proposes a 12/16 modulation code for 4-level holographic data storage, so that the largest symbol is 3 and the smallest symbol is 0, in order to reduce the ISI.

  • In this paper, we propose the channel estimation for the space time coded-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (ST-OFDM) muti-input multi-output (MIMO) system with comb type pilot arrangements. In the conventional method, specially constructed pilots are inserted in the OFDM symbols at all transmit antennas separately. The proposed algorithm multiplies the orthogonal code to be transmitted OFDM symbols to estimate channels at the receiver. This algorithm can estimate a long channel delay with high accuracy. It is proved by computer simulations.

  • By applying the finite element theory which is capable of handling the geometrically altered structure in a successive manner, the linear relationship between incremental displacements and the magnitude of the initial stress field was derived. Based on this relationship, back analysis code having the capability of dealing multi-step excavation problem was built and verified With this back analysis code, the measurements of the incremental displacements in a particular excavation step make it possible to back-calculate the initial stress state. illustrative examples showed the applicability of this code to a practical problem.

  • This paper describes an analysis of optimal design conditions of multi-mode LDPC(low density parity check) decoder which supports three block lengths (648, 1296, 1944) and four code rates (1/2, 2/3, 3/4, 5/6) for IEEE 802.11n WLAN system. A fixed-point model of LDPC decoder, which adopts min-sum algorithm and layered decoding scheme, is implemented using Matlab. From fixed-point simulation results for various bit-width parameters such as internal bit-width, integer/fractional part bit-widths, optimal design conditions and decoding performance of LDPC decoder are analyzed.
