Shape Optimization of a Rotating Two-Pass Duct with a Guide Vane in the Turning Region (회전하는 냉각유로의 곡관부에 부착된 가이드 베인의 형상 최적설계)

  • The heat transfer and pressure loss characteristics of a rotating two-pass channel with a guide vane in the turning region have been studied using three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) analysis, and the shape of the guide vane has been optimized using surrogate modeling optimization technique. For the optimization, thickness, location and angle of the guide vanes have been selected as design variables. The objective function has been defined as a linear combination of the heat transfer and the friction loss related terms with a weighting factor. Latin hypercube sampling has been applied to determine the design points as design of experiments. A weighted-average surrogate model, PBA has been used as the surrogate model. The guide vane in the turning region does not influence the heat transfer in the first passage upstream of the turning region, but enhances largely the heat transfer in the turning region and the second passage. In an example of the optimization, the objective function has been increased by 13.6%.

  • A genetic algorithm (GA) has been employed to optimize the major design variables of the liquid rocket engine. Pressure of the main combustion chamber, nozzle expansion ratio and O/F ratio have been selected as design variables. The target engine has the open gas generator cycle using the LO2/RP-1 propellant. The gas properties of the combustion chamber have been obtained from CEA2 and the mass has been estimated using reference data. The objective function has been set as multi-objective function with the specific impulse and thrust to weight ratio using the weight method. The result shows about 4% improvement of the specific impulse and 23% increase of the thrust to weight ratio. The Pareto frontier line has been also obtained for various thrust requirements.

Delay-Margin based Traffic Engineering for MPLS-DiffServ Networks

  • This paper presents a delay-margin based traffic engineering (TE) approach to provide end-to-end quality of service (QoS) in multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) networks using differentiated services (DiffServ) at the link level. The TE, including delay, class, and route assignments, is formulated as a nonlinear optimization problem reflecting the inter-class and inter-link dependency introduced by DiffServ and end-to-end QoS requirements. Three algorithms are used to provide a solution to the problem: The first two, centralized offline route configuration and link-class delay assignment, operate in the convex areas of the feasible region to consecutively reduce the objective function using a per-link per-class decomposition of the objective function gradient. The third one is a heuristic that promotes/demotes connections at different links in order to deal with concave areas that may be produced by a trunk route usage of more than one class on a given link. Approximations of the three algorithms suitable for on-line distributed TE operation are also derived. Simulation is used to show that proposed approach can increase the number of users while maintaining end-to-end QoS requirements.

  • This paper presents a hybrid algorithm for solving optimal power flow(OPF) in order to enhance a systems capability to cope with outages, which is based on combined application of evolutionary computation and local search method. The efficient algorithm combining main advantages of two methods is as follows : Firstly, evolutionary computation is used to perform global exploitation among a population. This gives a good initial point of conventional method. Then, local methods are used to perform local exploitation. The hybrid approach often outperforms either method operating alone and reduces the total computation time. The objective function of the security constrained OPF is the minimization of generation fuel costs and real power losses. The resulting optimal operating point has to be feasible after outages such as any single line outage(respect of voltage magnitude, reactive power generation and power flow limits). In OPF considering security, the outages are selected by contingency ranking method(contingency screening model).   • How to determine the right number of small base stations to activate in multi-cell uplinks to match traffic from a fixed quantity of K users is an open question. This paper analyses the uplink cooperative that jointly receives base stations activation to explore this question. This paper is different from existing works only consider transmitting power as optimization objective function. The global objective function is formulated as a summation of two terms: transmitting power for data and coordinated overhead for control. Then, the joint base stations activation and beamforming problem is formulated as a mixed integer second order cone optimization. To solve this problem, we develop two polynomial-time distributed methods. Method one is a two-stage solution which activates no more than K small base stations (SBSs). Method two is a heuristic algorithm by dual decomposition to MI-SOCP that activates more SBSs to obtain multiple-antennae diversity gains. Thanks to the parallel computation for each node, our methods are more computationally efficient. The strengths and weaknesses of these two proposed two algorithms are also compared using numerical results.

  • This paper proposes a hydrophone array design optimization technique for cavitation tunnel noise measurements. The optimization technique comprises of design parameters, an objective function and an optimization algorithm. The design parameters are defined for circular, spiral and multi-spiral arrays. The objective function is defined so as to consider the mainlobe beamwidth and the maximum sidelobe level simultaneously. A global optimization scheme is applied to the array design using very fast simulated reannealing (VFSR). After applying the optimization technique to arrays respectively, the peak sidelobe level and the mainlobe beamwidth of optimum arrays are analyzed. Finally the array patterns considering multiple reflections in the cavitation tunnel are evaluated to validate the proposed method.

  • An automated injection molding design methodology has been developed to optimize multiple quality attributes, which are usually in conflict with each other, in injection molded parts. For the optimization, commercial CAE simulation tools and optimization techniques are integrated into the methodology. To decal with the multiple objective problem the relative closeness computed in TOPSIS(Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) is used as a performance measurement index for optimization multiple part defects. To attain robustness against process variation, Taguchi's quadratic loss function is introduced in the TOPSIS. Also, the modified complex method is used as an optimization tool to optimize objective function. The verification of the developed design methodology was carried out on simulation software with an actual model. Applied to production this methodology will be useful to companies in reducing their product development time and enhancing their product quality.

  • Permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (PMLSM) is suitable for use in cleanroom environments and have advantages such as high speed, high thrust, and high precision. If the stators are arranged in the entire moving path of the mover, there is a problem in that the installation cost increases. To solve this problem, discontinuous armature arrangement PMLSM has been proposed. In this case, the mover receives a greater detent force in the section where the stator is not arranged. When a large detent force occurs, it appears as a ripple component of the thrust during PMLSM operation. If the shape of the stator is changed to reduce the detent force, the characteristics of the back EMF are changed. Therefore, in this paper, the detent force and the harmonic components of back EMF were reduced through multi-purpose shape optimization. To this end, the FEA model was constructed and main effect analysis was performed on the major shape variables affecting each objective function. Then, the optimal shape that minimizes the objective function was derived through the response surface analysis method.

  • In this paper, an integrated optimum design method for hybrid structural control system is studied. Not only the distribution and the capacity of passive devices but also those of active devices, and the controllers are treated as design variables in the proposed approach. Multi-objective optimization problem is formulated by using the preference function, which is newly defined in this study. Genetic algorithm is adopted as a numerical searching technique in order to simultaneously find the optimum solutions. The validity of the proposed method is verified through the example designs and the numerical simulations of an earthquake excited multi-degrees-of-freedom structure.

  • Most of the current literature on inventory theory has been devoted to the study of single stage models. A class of inventory problems which is of great interest is the multistage inventory system which involves a series and hierarchical sequence of stations. This study analyzes some aspect of the series type and multi-stage inventory system, using the fixed cycle ordering which bas a modificatory control function in the system equations. The objective of this study is to clarify the dynamic behavior of the system. The author has derived the theoretical formulas of variation of ordering quantity and stock fluctuation of each stage due to power spectral density function. Influence of parameters such as, (1) intensity of autocorrelation of demand sequence ($\lambda$), (2) forecasting exponential smoothing factors of each stage (${\alpha}_1,\;{\alpha}_2,\;{\alpha}_3$) and (3) production control factor of the 3rd stage ($\gamma$), as operators of the system on the variation of ordering quantity and stock fluctuation of the system. is also clarified. As a result of this study, the relations between the variation of ordering quantity, stock fluctuation and the parameters of the system, have been found. The principles and the theorical analysis presented here will be applicable to more complex type of discrete control systems in constructing the specific condition of the system to minimize inventory variances.
