  • We study the problem of multiple response optimization (MRO) and focus on the selection of input levels which will produce desirable output quality. We propose an interactive multiple objective optimization approach to the input design. The earlier interactive methods utilized for MRO communicate with the decision maker only using the response variable values, in order to improve the current response values, thereby resulting in the corresponding design solution automatically. In their interaction steps of preference articulation, no account is taken of any active changes in design variable values. On the contrary, our approach permits the decision maker to change the design variable values in its interaction stage, which makes possible the consideration of the preference or economics of the design variable side. Using some typical value functions, we also demonstrate that our method converges reasonably well to the known optimal solutions.

  • A multi-objective design exploration for a three-element airfoil consisted of a slat, a main wing, and a flap was carried out. The lift curve improvement is important to design high-lift system, thus design has to be performed with considered multi-angle. The objective functions considered here are to maximize the lift coefficient at landing and near stall conditions simultaneously. Kriging surrogate model which was constructed based on several sample designs is introduced. The solution space was explored based on the maximization of Expected Improvement (EI) value corresponding to objective functions on the Krigingmodels. The improvement of the model and the exploration of the optimum can be advanced at the same time by maximizing EI value. In this study, a total of 90 sample points are evaluated using the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes simulation(RANS) for the construction of the Kriging model. In order to obtain the information of the design space, two data mining techniques are applied to design result. One is functional Analysis of Variance(ANOVA) which can show quantitative information and the other is Self-Organizing Map(SOM) which can show qualitative information.

  • In this research, a multi-objective optimal design of a scroll compressor lower frame was approximated, and the design parameters of the lower frame were selected. The sensitivity of the design parameters was induced through a parameter analysis, and the thickness was determined to be the most sensitive parameter to stress and deflection. All of the design parameters regarding the mass are sensitive factors. It was formulated for the problem about stress and deflection to be caused by the axial load. The sensitivity of the design variables was determined using an orthogonal array for the parameter analysis. Using the central composite and D-optimal designs, a second polynomial approximation of the objective and constraint functions was formulated and the accuracy was verified through an R-square. These functions were applied to the optimal design program (NSGA-II). Through a CAE analysis, the effectiveness of the central composite and D-optimal designs was determined.

  • The Control Rod Drive Mechanism (CRDM) is an essential part of the reactor, which realizes the start-stop and power adjustment of the reactor by lifting and lowering the control rod assembly. As a moving part in CRDM, the latch directly contacts with the control rod assembly, and the life of latch is closely related to the service life of the reactor. In this paper, the relationship between the life of the latch and the step stress, friction stress, and impact stress in the process of movement is analyzed, and the optimization methodology and process of latch life based on the approximate model are proposed. The design variables that affect the life of the latch are studied through the experimental design, and the optimization objective of design variables based on the latch life is established. Based on this, an approximate model of the life of the latch is built, and the multi-objective optimization of the life of the latch is optimized through the NSGA-II algorithm.

  • The present study presents the design procedures and the acoustic properties of the main hall of Ansan Cultural Arts Center in Korea which has opened in 2004. The acoustic design values are compared with the measured acoustic properties of the completed multi-purpose hall. Acoustic design criteria were suggested in the design stage through the 3-dimentional computer simulations. The acoustic parameters including SPL, RT, C80, $D_{50}$M, RASTI were measured in the hall after completed. Acoustic measurements were carried out in the 40 measurement points using MLS sound source signal in 4 different sound source points. The results show the even distribution of sound levels within the 2.0dB of difference among all seats. The reverberation time of 1.66sec was measured which is similar to the objective value of 1.65 sec in empty states. It was also found that average C80 values lie in the objective extents of C80 from -1 to 3dB and average D50 value of 54 was measured. Thus, it is concluded that the hall can be used as a multi-purpose hall with a suitable acoustic conditions.

  • In the flow analysis around a bluffbody such as road vehicles, drag reduction has been of the primary concern mainly due to the effect on fuel economy. To reduce the drag, which is mostly due to the pressure difference caused by the flow separation, the location of the separation and eddy sizes are controlled. However, less attention has been given to the effect of the lift. The effect of lift may cause the driving stability problem of the vehicle at high speed white heavy downward effect of lift together with the vehicle weight may require more power to drive the vehicle forward. It is considered worthwhile to pursue the optimal design of the low drag tail shape of the MIRA model while taking the lift effect into account, even though it is considered as a reference. To this end, a commercial multi-objective optimization code, FRONTIER, Is used together with the CFD code, STAR-CD. It is hoped that the results will provide more insight into the flow field around the bluffbody as transportation means.

  • The energy absorption characteristics of diamond core sandwich cylindrical columns under axial crushing process depend greatly on the amount of material which participates in the plastic deformation. Both the single-objective and multi-objective optimizations are performed for columns under axial crushing load with core thickness and helix pitch of the honeycomb core as design variables. Models are optimized by multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) algorithm to achieve maximum specific energy absorption (SEA) capacity and minimum peak crushing force (PCF). Results show that optimization improves the energy absorption characteristics with constrained and unconstrained peak crashing load. Also, it is concluded that the aluminum tube has a better energy absorption capability rather than steel tube at a certain peak crushing force. The results justify that the interaction effects between the honeycomb and column walls greatly improve the energy absorption efficiency. A ranking technique for order preference (TOPSIS) is then used to sort the non-dominated solutions by the preference of decision makers. That is, a multi-criteria decision which consists of MOPSO and TOPSIS is presented to find out a compromise solution for decision makers. Furthermore, local and global sensitivity analyses are performed to assess the effect of design variable values on the SEA and PCF functions in design domain. Based on the sensitivity analysis results, it is concluded that for both models, the helix pitch of the honeycomb core has greater effect on the sensitivity of SEA, while, the core thickness has greater effect on the sensitivity of PCF.

  • A study on the flow-structure characteristics of marine 3/2WAY pneumatic valve is essential for optimizing the performance of ship engines. It is important that the valve has desirable safety factor and reduced weight from safety and economic point of view. In this paper, flow-structure characteristics of pneumatic valve is obtained by being optimized based on the proper design criteria. The air with the pressure of 30 bar is the working fluid which is made to fill in the tack in short time. This time is defined as the filling time. On optimum design by considering the flow-structure characteristics, the approach is based on (1) the mathematical formulation of design decisions using the compromise decision-making method, and (2) the approximation technique of response surfaces. The methodology is demonstrated as the multi-objective optimization tool to improve the performance of marine 3/2WAY pneumatic valve.

  • This paper presents a review on getting a Weighted Multi-Objective Optimization (WMO) of Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) parameters based on Response Surface Methodology (RSM) coupled central composite design and Weighted Desirability Function (WDF) to attenuate the earthquake vibration of a jacket supported Offshore Wind Turbine (OWT). To optimize the parameters (stiffness and damping coefficient) of damper, the frequency ratio and damping ratio were considered as a design variable and the top displacement and frequency response were considered as objective functions. The optimization has been carried out under only El Centro earthquake results and after obtained the optimal parameters, more two earthquakes (California and Northridge) has been performed to investigate the performance of optimal damper. The obtained results also compared with the different conventional TMD's designed by Den Hartog's, Sadek et al.'s and Warburton's method. From the results, it was found that the optimal TMD based on RSM shows better response than the conventional damper. It is concluded that the proposed response model offers an efficient approach regarding the TMD optimization.

  • Proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers are widely used in industrial sites. Most tuning methods for PID controllers use an empirical and experimental approach; thus, the experience and intuition of a designer greatly affect the tuning of the controller. The representative methods include the closed-loop tuning method of Ziegler-Nichols (Z-N), the C-C tuning method, and the Internal Model Control tuning method. There has been considerable research on the tuning of PID controllers for single-input single-output systems but very little for multi-input multi-output systems. It is more difficult to design PID controllers for multi-input multi-output systems than for single-input single-output systems because there are interactive control loops that affect each other. This paper presents a tuning method for the PID controller for a two-input two-output system. The proposed method uses a real-coded genetic algorithm (RCGA) as an optimization tool, which optimizes the PID controller parameters for minimizing the given objective function. Three types of objective functions are selected for the RCGA, and each PID controller parameter is determined accordingly. The performance of the proposed method is compared with that of the Z-N method, and the validity of the proposed method is examined.
