The multi-layer neural network that has broadly been utilized in designing the controller of robot manipulator possesses the desirable characteristics of learning capacity, by which the uncertain variation of the dynamic parameters of robot can be handled adaptively, and parallel distributed processing that makes it possible to control on real-time. However the error back propagation algorithm that has been utilized popularly in the learning of the multi-layer neural network has the problem of its slow convergencs speed. In this paper, an approach to improve the convergence speed is proposed using fuzzy logic that can effectively handle the uncertain and fuzzy informations by linguistic level. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated by computer simulation of PUMA 560 robot manipulator.

Using the design parameters of multi-joint manipulator, worspace of the manipulator were evaluated analytically, and the relation between such design parameters and nonlinearity of the manipulator were presented dynamically. The ratio of the volumes of a manipulator's workspace to the cube of its total link length presents a kinematic performance index [NVI] for the manipullator. It is possible to geometrically represent the manipulator dynamics with the generalized inertia ellipsoid (GIE). The relation between the GIE configuration and the characteristics of manipulator dynamics was analysed in terms of inertia and nonlinear forces (Coliolis and centrifugal forces). The nonlinearity caused by the change of the GIE configuration were affected by the difference between the major and minor axes length of the GIE. The results of this investigationare applied to the optimal design of the manipulator.
This paper presents to accomplish successfully a multi-input real time control by applying control hierarchy for sliding mode of multi-joint manipulators whose nonlinear terms are regarded as disturbances. We- could simplify the dynamic equations of a manipulator and servo system, which are composed of linear elements and nonlinear elements, by assuming that nonlinear terms, which are Inertia term, gravity force term, Coriolis force term and centrifugal force term, are external disturbance. By simplifying that equation, we could easily obtain a control input which satisfy sliding mode of multi-input system. We proposed a new control input algorithm in order to decrease chattering by changing control input according as effect of disturbance if a control response become within allowance error range. In this experiments, we used DSP(Digital Signal Processor) controller to suppress chattering by time delay of calculation and to carry out real time control.

Robot manipulator has highly nonlinear dynamics. Therefore the control of multi-link robot arms is a challenging and difficult problem. In this paper a decentralized adaptive fuzzy sliding mode scheme is developed for control of robot manipulators. The proposed scheme does not require an accurate manipulator dynamic model, yet it guarantees asymptotic trajectory tracking despite gross robot parameter variations. Numerical simulation for decentralized control of a 3-axis PUMA arm will also be included.

For free motions, vibration suppression of flexible manipulators has been one of the hottest research topics. However, for constrained motions, a little effort has been devoted for vibration suppression control. Using the dependency of elastic deflections of links on contact force under static conditions, vibrations for constrained planar two-link flexible manipulators have been suppressed successfully by controlling the contact force. However, for constrained spatial multi-link flexible manipulators, the vibrations cannot be suppressed by only controlling the contact force. So, the aim of this paper is to clarify the vibration mechanism of a constrained, multi-DOF, flexible manipulator and to devise the suppression method. We apply a concise hybrid position/force control scheme to control a flexible manipulator modeled by lumped-parameter modeling method. Finally, a comparison between simulation and experimental results is presented to show the performance of our method.

This paper presents a motor selection technique for a manipulator design that is used in a multipurpose dog-horse robot. Since the dynamics of a manipulator and its servo drives are closely related to each other, it requires a repetitive analysis to determine a suitable motor. In order to simplify this procedure, Straete et al. proposed a simple normalization method to separate the load dependent terms and the motor dependent terms. This technique is adopted in this paper for selecting a motor in designing a manipulator.

The force control of a constrained flexible manipulators has been one of the major research topics. However, a little effort has been devoted for the relation between friction force and elastic deflection of end-effector for a constrained flexible manipulator. So, the aim of this paper is to clarify the friction mechanism of a constrained spatial multi-link flexible manipulator by changing the material and connected method of end-effector. In this study, a concise hybrid position/force control scheme is applied to the control of a flexible manipulator, and the experimental results for the constrained vertical motion and constrained horizontal motion is presented. Finally a comparison between these results are presented to show the reduction of vibration of link and friction force.

It is said that robot can be used for multi-purpose use by changing end effector or/and visual sensor with its software. In this study, it was investigated what multi-purpose robot for fruit-production was using a tomato harvesting robot and a robot to work in vineyard. Tomato harvesting robot consisted of manipulator, end-effector, visual sensor and traveling device. Plant training system of larger size tomato is similar with that of cherry-tomato. Two end-effectors were prepared for larger size tomato and cherry-tomato fruit harvesting operations, while the res components were not changed for the different work objects. A color TV camera could be used for the both work objects, however fruit detecting algorithm and extracted features from image should be changed. As for the grape-robot , several end-effector for harvesting , berry thinning , bagging and spraying were developed and experimented after attaching each end-effector to manipulator end. The manipulator was a polar coordinate type and had five degrees of freedom so that it could have enough working space for the operations. It was observed that visual sensor was necessary for harvesting, bagging and berry-thinning operations and that spraying operation requires another sensor for keeping certain distance between trellis and end-effector. From the experimental results, it was considered that multi-operations by the same robot could be appropriately done on the same or similar plant training system changing some robot components . One of the important results on having function of multi-operation was to be able to make working period of the robot longer.

An electro-hydraulic manipulator using hydraulic actuators has many nonlinear elements, and its parameter fluctuations are greater than those of an electrically driven manipulator. So it is quite difficult to obtain stable control performance. We have applied a disturbance estimation and compensation type robust control to all the axes in a 6-link electro-hydraulic manipulator. It was confirmed that the performance of trajectory tracking and attitude regulating was greatly improved by the disturbance observer. For autonomous assembly tasks, it is said that compliance control is one of the most popular methods in contact task. We have proposed a compliance control based on the position control by a disturbance observer for our manipulator system. To realize more stable contact work, the states in the compliance loop are feedbacked, where not only displacement but also the velocity and acceleration are considered. We have also applied this compliance control to the Peg-in-Hole insertion task and proposed new methods of (1)rotating of the end-effector periodically in order to reduce the friction force, (2)random searching for the center of a hole and (3)trajectory modification to reduce the impact force. As a result of these new methods, it could be experimentally confirmed that the Peg-in-Hole insertion task with a clearance of 0.007 [mm] could be achieved.
