Designing Optimal Pulse-Shapers for Ultra-Wideband Radios

  • Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology is gaining increasing interest for its potential application to short-range indoor wireless communications. Utilizing ultra-short pulses, UWB baseband transmissions enable rich multipath diversity, and can be demodulated with low complexity receivers. Compliance with the FCC spectral mask, and interference avoidance to, and from, co-existing narrow-band services, calls for judicious design of UWB pulse shapers. This paper introduces pulse shaper designs for UWB radios, which optimally utilize the bandwidth and power allowed by the FCC spectral mask. The resulting baseband UWB systems can be either single-band, or, multi-band. More important, the novel pulse shapers can support dynamic avoidance of narrow-band interference, as well as efficient implementation of fast frequency hopping, without invoking analog carriers.

  • We present an intelligent optical switching structure based on our lambda-group model along with a working scheme that can provide a distinctive approach for dividing complicated traffic into specific tunnels for better optical performance and grooming efficiency. Both the results and figures from our experiments show that the particular channel partition not only helps in reducing ports significantly, but also improves the average signal-to-noise ratio of the wavelength channel and the blocking performance for dynamic connection requests.

  • The studies to estimate the surface spectral reflectance of an object have received widespread attention using the multi-spectral camera system. However, the multi-spectral camera system requires the additional color filter according to increment of the channel and system complexity is increased by multiple capture. Thus, this paper proposes an algorithm to reduce the estimation error of surface spectral reflectance with the conventional 3-band RGB camera. In the proposed method, adaptive principal components for each pixel are calculated by renewing the population of surface reflectances and the adaptive principal components can reduce estimation error of surface spectral reflectance of current pixel. To evacuate performance of the proposed estimation method, 3-band principal component analysis, 5-band wiener estimation method, and the proposed method are compared in the estimation experiment with the Macbeth ColorChecker. As a result, the proposed method showed a lower mean square ems between the estimated and the measured spectra compared to the conventional 3-band principal component analysis method and represented a similar or advanced estimation performance compared to the 5-band wiener method.

  • X-대역, Ku-대역, K-대역 및 Ka-대역의 신호를 수신할 수 있는 다중 대역 수신기의 구조를 제안하고 이를 구현하기 위해서 요구되는 광대역 및 높은 출력 전력 특성을 갖는 전압 제어 발진기를 설계 제작하였다. 완충단을 갖는 전압 제어 발진기는 정상 상태 조건에서 발진부의 특성이 완충단에 의해 영향을 받지 않도록 발진부의 출력 임피던스와 완충단의 입력 임피던스가 직교 교차하도록 설계하였다. 제작한 전압 제어 발진기는 튜닝 전압 $0.0{\sim}8.0\;V$에서 $14.00{\sim}15.20\;GHz$ 대역폭을 나타내었고, $12{\sim}13\;dBm$ 출력 전력 특성을 나타내어 다중 대역 수신기에서 요구하는 특성을 만족하였다.

  • 본 논문에서는 대역 저지 U형태의 슬롯이 추가된 다중 대역 모노폴 안테나를 제안하였다. 안테나는 유연성을 가지는 폴리마이드 필름 기판으로 제작하였다. 제안된 안테나는 U-슬롯이 추가된 패치 형태의 모노폴 안테나로 2.7 GHz 대역에서 저지 특성을 갖도록 설계하였으며, 인접한 주파수 대역에서 반사 손실 특성의 개선을 얻을 수 있었다. 실제 자동차 유리에 부착한 실험을 통해 ISM 대역(2.4~2.483 GHz)과 WAVE 대역(5.85~5.925 GHz)에서 10 dB 이상의 반사 손실을 가지는 것을 확인하였다. 방사 패턴은 높은 주파수 대역에서 일부 패턴의 널이 있으나 전반적으로 전방향성의 특성을 나타내었으며, 2.8, 5.7 dBi의 최대 이득을 가졌다.

  • This paper presents an advanced RFID reader system implementing multi-protocols and multi-standards at 900MHz. In accordance with the strict regulations specified by ISO 18000-6 B-Type and EPC Global Gen 2, we have designed corresponding systemic factors which meet the domestic radio frequency utilizing bands of 910-914MHz. In addition, we develop numerous crucial factors of system compatibility options including SSB (Single-Side Band) and DSB (Double-Side Band) specifications, also OOK (On-Off Keying), ASK (Amplitude Shift Keying) and PR-ASK (Phase Reversed-Amplitude Shift Keying) modulation formula. Remarkable technical features of system in this paper can be the direct conversion routines using I/Q Modulation/Demodulation respectively, and Full-Duplex formulation operating at identical frequency bands.

  • A CMOS direct-conversion mixer with a single transistor-level topology is proposed in this paper. Since the single transistor-level topology needs smaller supply voltage than the conventional Gilbert-cell topology, the proposed mixer structure is suitable for a low power and highly integrated RF system-on-a-chip (SoC). The proposed direct-conversion mixer is designed for the multi-band ultra-wideband (UWB) system covering from 3 to 7 GHz. The conversion gain and input P1dB of the mixer are about 3 dB and -10 dBm, respectively, with multi-band RF signals. The mixer consumes 4.3 mA under a 1.8 V supply voltage.

  • The time synchronization method for Multi-band UWB systems is proposed. We analyze the performance in symbol synchronization using a training symbol with two identical halves. The two halves of the training symbol are made identical by transmitting a modulated sequence on the even frequencies, while zeros are used on the odd frequencies.

  • This paper deals with the design of decentralized controller for load-frequency control of interconnected power systems with superconducting magnetic energy storage units and Governor Dead Band Nonlinearity using Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithm. The superconducting magnetic energy storage unit exhibits favourable damping effects by suppressing the frequency oscillations as well as stabilizing the inter-area oscillations effectively. The proposed control strategy is mainly based on a compromise between Integral Squared Error and Maximum Stability Margin criteria. Analysis on a two-area interconnected thermal power system reveals that the proposed controller improves the dynamic performance of the system and guarantees good closed-loop stability even in the presence of nonlinearities and with parameter changes.

  • 최근에 3.5G, 4G 이동통신, WiMax 등 다양한 고속 무선 데이터 서비스의 발달이 급속도로 진행됨에 따라 기지국을 위한 무선 백홀의 전송속도가 현재 보다 급격히 높아질것으로 예상되며, 광 백본망에 연결되지 않은 빌딩들을 위한 광통신망과 빌딩간 'Last Mile' 구간에 대한 경제적인 통신망 확보가 요구되고 있다. 본 고에서는 경제적으로 Gbps급 광 백본망과 가입자를 연결하거나, Gbps급 사설통신망 및 백홀에 이용할 수 있는 E-band 이용 Multi-Gbps급 고정 점대점 통신 시스템과 송수신기 핵심 구성 부품의 기술 개발 동향을 소개하고자 한다.
