  • This paper studies a multiple user class variable demand user equilibrium and system optimal condition, and then establishes solution algorithms for them. The traffic network equilibrium is accomplished with basis on following assumptions. For considering heterogeneous road user, several user classes have discrete set of VOTs and the travel demand of each user classes varies according to generalized travel cost. this paper specifically investigates following question on multi-class variable demand: Are user equilibrium flows pattern dependent on the unit (time or money) perceived by road user classes? What is system optimal condition according to the unit used in measuring the travel cost or disutility? Finally, using this network equilibrium condition, The traffic assignment algorithm of each equilibrium condition are established.

  • A method to investigate the design variable tolerance effects on the variances of the response, the characteristics, and the performance of a mechanical system is presented in this paper. The Monte-Carlo method has been conventionally employed to achieve such goals. However, the Monte-Carlo method has some serious drawbacks related to the computation time and the consistent solution convergence. To resolve the drawbacks of the method, a method employing sensitivity information is proposed. Sensitivity equations for a mechanical system are obtained analytically by differentiating the multi-body formulation with respect to a design variable. By using the chain rule along with the sensitivity information, the variances of the response, the characteristics, and the performance of a dynamic system can be calculated.

  • We present a quantum theorical background of the existence of multi-variable link invariants, for example the Kauffman polynomial, by observing the quantum (sl(2,$\mathbb{C}$), ad)-invariant from the Kontsevich invariant point of view. The background implies that the Kauffman polynomial can be studied by using the sl(N,$\mathbb{C}$)-skein theory similar to the Jones polynomial and the HOMFLY polynomial.

  • Objective: The objective of this study was to examine multi-modal interaction effects of input-mode switching on the use of smart phones. Background: Multi-modal is considered as an efficient alternative for input and output of information in mobile environments. However, there are various limitations in current mobile UI (User Interface) system that overlooks the transition between different modes or the usability of a combination of multi modal uses. Method: A pre-survey determined five representative tasks from smart phone tasks by their functions. The first experiment involved the use of a uni-mode for five single tasks; the second experiment involved the use of a multi-mode for three dual tasks. The dependent variables were user preference and task completion time. The independent variable in the first experiment was the type of modes (i.e., Touch, Pen, or Voice) while the variable in the second experiment was the type of tasks (i.e., internet searching, subway map, memo, gallery, and application store). Results: In the first experiment, there was no difference between the uses of pen and touch devices. However, a specific mode type was preferred depending on the functional characteristics of the tasks. In the second experiment, analysis of results showed that user preference depended on the order and combination of modes. Even with the transition of modes, users preferred the use of multi-modes including voice. Conclusion: The order of combination of modes may affect the usability of multi-modes. Therefore, when designing a multi-modal system, the fact that there are frequent transitions between various mobile contents in different modes should be properly considered. Application: It may be utilized as a user-centered design guideline for mobile multi modal UI system.

  • In the present work, a synchronization test system for variable nozzle is described. Variable nozzles are used to enhance the effectiveness of aircraft engines at various altitudes. The synchronization test system was developed to verify the dynamic characteristics and synchronization of variable nozzle mechanism including flaps. The system with a variable nozzle was analyzed, before its fabrication, by a multi-body dynamics analysis software RecurDyn. The newly developed test system is being used to show the synchronization capability of a variable nozzle system.

  • In order to not only perform as a extreme model under the severe operating condition but also acquire more diverse and advanced control capability utilizing high compliance, active vibration control of a flexible 2-link robot manipulator are investigated. Multi variable-structured frequency shaped optimal sliding mode is proposed for the flexible robot manipulator like control system, whose control variables, an angular motion of joint and vibration of flexible link, have to be controlled simultaneously by one control torque at a driving joint. The control system is divided into two subsystems, a control input related subsystem and an added subsystem. The proposed sliding mode, composed of multi control variables, makes optimized relation between subsystems and a individual control input, thus, the sliding mode controller can compensate whole dynamics of each subsystems simultaneously. And the possibility and effectiveness are verified by vibration control of a manipulator having two flexible links. Simulation and experiment results show that the proposed control scheme achieves the purpose effectively.

  • Under high velocity, pulse type near source earthquakes semi-active control systems are very effective in reducing seismic response base isolated structures. Semi-active control systems can be classified as: 1) independently variable stiffness, 2) independently variable damping, and 3) combined variable stiffness and damping systems. Several researchers have studied the effectiveness of independently varying damping systems for seismic response reduction of base isolated structures. In this study effectiveness of a combined system consisting of a semi-active independently variable stiffness (SAIVS) device and a magnetorheological (MR) damper in reducing seismic response of base isolated structures is analytically investigated. The SAIVS device can vary the stiffness, and hence the period, of the isolation system; whereas, the MR damper enhances the energy dissipation characteristics of the isolation system. Two separate control algorithms, i.e., a nonlinear tangential stiffness moving average control algorithm for smooth switching of the SAIVS device and a Lyapunov based control algorithm for damping variation of MR damper, are developed. Single and multi degree of freedom systems consisting of sliding base isolation system and both the SAIVS device and MR damper are considered. Results are presented in the form of nonlinear response spectra, and effectiveness of combined variable stiffness and variable damping system in reducing seismic response of sliding base isolated structures is evaluated. It is shown that the combined variable stiffness and variable damping system leads to significant response reduction over cases with variable stiffness or variable damping systems acting independently, over a broad period range.

  • Polarization imaging systems have been widely used to selectively characterize skin lesions. Nevertheless, current systems are used in single-mode due to the limitations of a fixed polarization mode and a single-working distance of light source, in which uniform light distribution is achieved on target area. To address such limitations, we developed a variable polarization imaging system based on multi-working distance of light source for various clinical diagnoses. In this study, we characterize the imaging system and present experiment results demonstrating its clinical usefulness. The imaging system consists of a CCD color camera, linear polarization filters, and a single-layered LED ring light source which provides uniform light distribution at multi-working distances. The first polarizer was placed on the light source and the second polarizer placed on objective lens provides continuous linear polarization angle from $0^{\circ}\;to\;90^{\circ}$. The clinical efficacy of the imaging system was investigated by acquiring and analyzing clinical images of skin wrinkle and dental plaque. With the experiments, we verified the potential usefulness of the imaging system for other clinical applications.

  • This paper reports on the application of the integration of mathematical programming model and database in a decision support system (DSS) for the planning of the multi-reservoir operating system. The DSS is based on a multi-objective, mixed-integer goal programming (MIGP) model, which can generate efficient solutions via the weighted-sums method (WSM). The major concern of this study is seamless, efficient integration between the mathematical model and the database, because there are significant differences in structure and content between the data for a mathematical model and the data for a conventional database application. In order to load the external optimization results on the database, we developed a systematic way of naming variable/constraint so that a rapid identification of variables/constraints is possible. An efficient database structure for planning of the multi-reservoir operating system is presented by taking advantage of the naming convention of the variable/constraint.
