  • Many researchers have been investigating the design of multi-mode absorption vibration absorber for multi degree-of-freedom (DOF) system. The approach taken to this problem has been to find the optimized constants of stiffness and damping for the given set of single-DOF absorbers or single multi-DOF absorber attached to a multi degree-of-freedom system. This paper presents a novel geometrical and direct design theory of a 6 DOF vibration absorber via screw theory. Theoretical development is demonstrated by a practical example in which the diagonal stiffness matrix is synthesized using rectangular configuration of springs. The performance of this absorber is simulated by modal analysis.

  • A general vibration phenomenon of a rigid-body supported by springs can be viewed as a small repetitive screw displacement. From this view, a multi-directional vibration absorber can be designed by use of screw theory and transfer matrix method. In this paper, the basic equations of motion for a multi-body system have been expressed in terms of screws using transfer matrix method and a simple approach to the design of a multi-degrees-of-freedom absorber has been presented. In order to illustrate the methodology, an example for the design of a 2-DOF active absorber which is capable of absorbing vibration of a rigid body excited by 3-DOF external force has been presented.

  • Passive dynamic vibration absorbers (DVAs) are often used to suppress the excessive vibration of a large structure due to their simple construction and low maintenance cost compared to other vibration control techniques. A new type of passive DVA consists of two pendulums connected with spring and dashpot element is investigated. This research evaluated the performance of the DVA in reducing the vibration response of a two degree of freedom shear structure. A model for the two DOF vibration system with the absorber is developed. The nominal absorber parameters are calculated using a Genetic Algorithm(GA) procedure. A parametric study is performed to evaluate the effect of each absorber parameter on performance. The simulation results show that the optimum condition for the absorber frequencies and damping ratios is mainly affected by pendulum length, mass, and the damping coefficient of the pendulum's hinge joint. An experimental model validates the theoretical results. The simulation and experimental results show that the proposed technique is able be used as an effective alternative solution for reducing the vibration response of a multi degree of freedom vibration system.

  • In high-speed optical disk drive, the excitation caused by rotation of a mass-unbalanced disk is a major source of vibration. The vibration can be a disturbance to the servo system, which is sufficient to cause severe failures in the reading and writing process. The vibration also causes users to feel unpleasantness. The vibration reduction is therefore essential for the reliable operation of optical disk drive. One of the approaches to reduce the vibration is a dynamic vibration absorber(DVA). In this paper, we analyze the dynamic behavior of $DVD{\pm}RW$ combo drive system with DVA through 12-dof rigid multi-body dynamic model. The effective location and the optimal frequency ratio for the DVA are obtained from the analysis. The DVA are fabricated based on the analysis and its usefulness is confirmed.
