  • This experiment was conducted to study the effects of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and sugar contents in the loaves of five different host plants on tile larval period, pupal period, pupal period, number of eggs in the ovary, and the tolerance of fall webworm larvae (Hyphantria cunea DRURY) to gamma-BHC. The results obtained in this study were as follows; 1. The contents of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and sugar in tile leaves tested were varied with the species of the host plants and sampling time. 2. The larval and pupal periods were also varied with the host plants and generation of the fall webworm. The shortest larval and pupal periods were found in the mulberry and the longest ones in the apple tree, and their periods were shortened much more in the second generation. Except the relation between the larval period and tile nitrogen content in the first generation, significant correlation could not be found between their periods and nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and surgar contents. The nitrogen contents among the other chemical factors, however, might be much more influenced on their developing period. 3. The pupal weight and number of eggs in the ovary were also varied with the host plants. sex, and generation. In both generations, the greatest pupal weight and number of eggs per female were found in the mulberry and the least ones in the apple tree. No significant correlation could be found between the pupal weight and number of eggs per female and the chemical factors analyzed. However, only the nitrogen content seemed to be highly related to the pupal weight and number of eggs. 4. The tolerance of the fall webworm larval to gamma-BHC was highly varied with the host plants. The host order o( the larval tolerance level to gamma-BHC was box-elder, popla, platanus, apple tree, and mulberry. There was no significant correlation between the larval tolerance to the BHC and the chemical factors analyzed. However, the larvae fed on the host plant with higher pottassium content were shown a tendency to be higher tolerant.

  • Seven phytoplasma diseases have been occurred on floricultural crops in Korea : Ph-ch1 and Ph-ch2 of chrysanthemum, Ph-lily of lily, petunia flat stem-Korean (PFS-K) of petunia, poinsettia branch inducing- Korean (PoiBI-K) of poinsettia, statis witches' broom-Korean (SWB-K) of statis and azalea witches broom (AWB). Classification of the seven phytoplasmal diseases based on 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) sequences showed that floricultural crop phytoplasma disease were widespread in order of aster yellow (AY), stolbur and X-disease in Korea. In phenotypic characters, the fasciation was occurred in both monocotyledon plant of lily and dicotyledon plants of petunia and poinsettia. Besides, the fascination was occurred in Ph-lily of stolbur, petunia PFS-K of AY and PoiBI-K of X-disease. This result indicated that phytoplasma classification based on 16S rRNA and symptoms are not consistently related. The comparison of 16S rRNA sequence of the seven floricultural crop phytoplasma with five tree phytoplasmal diseases of jujube witches' broom, paulownia witches' broom, wild jujube witches' broom, mulberry dwarf, golden rain phytoplasma occurred in Korea showed as high as 88.5-99.9% homology. Among them, especially mulberry dwarf showed the highest homology with the seven floricultural crop phytoplasms. Based on this result, floricultural crop phytoplasmas were assumed to be transmitted by insect vectors from tree phytoplasmas in Korea.

  • This study was conducted to identify the air temperature factors that affect leafing date of mulberry (Morus alba) in Buan, Jeonbuk province. Over the period from 2009 to 2014, the leafing date averaged April 24 (114 Julian days). The earliest leafing date was April 12, in 2014, and the latest leafing date was May 2, in 2011. Yearly variations of daily mean temperature (DMT) and daily maximum temperature (DMxT) were high in the last part of March. There were highly negative correlations between leafing date and degree days of accumulated DMT above 0, 5, and $10^{\circ}C$ in the period from March 1 to April 10. Linear regression equations for estimating the leafing date were y = 153.8 - 0.1886 ${\times}$ ($r^2=0.965^{**}$) and y = 126.2 - 0.2246 ${\times}$ ($r^2=0.825^*$) for the degree days of accumulated DMT above $5^{\circ}C$ in the period from March 1 to April 10 and the last part of March, respectively. Therefore, leafing date of mulberry, which is important for popcorn disease control, is 96.5% predicted by degree days of accumulated DMT above $5^{\circ}C$ in the periods from March 1 to April 10.

  • In atherosclerosis, blood vessels become sensitive to vessel-constricting agents leading to reduced control in the event of abrupt blood pressure changes. Mulberry trees (Morus alba L., MA) have been claimed to contain various bioactive principles that could possibly prevent atherosclerosis development caused by high cholesterol consumption. In order to examine whether MA feeding can prevent the sensitization of blood vessels, MA leaves were fed to rats for 8 weeks and pressor responses to vasoconstricting agents were assessed. Animals were pithed before blood pressure assessments to eliminate reflex compensation in vessel responses. Feeding diets containing high levels of cholesterol led to potentiated pressor responses to sympathetic nerve stimulation, or to injection of norepinephrine, phenylephrine, angiotensin II and vasopressin in pithed rats. These potentiated pressor responses were prevented in rats fed MA leaf-containing diets at 2 or 10% levels. It was also examined in anesthetized non-pithed rats whether similar cholestrol-related sensitization and MA prevention could be observed. However, high cholesterol-induced sensitization in pressor responses were not observed, suggesting that destruction of central cardiovascular control by pithing must have revealed the sensitization responses. It was concluded that MA leaves seem to be active in preventing abnormal blood vessel reactivity caused by hypercholesterolemia.

  • Profitability was analysed in the fields of various planting densities from 1,666 trees/10a to 4,166 with mulberry grafts or conventional saplings under the consideration of leaf yield and quality. Leaf yield per tree decreased with the higher planting densities. Seasonal and total leaf yield per area, however, increased by 20 to 63% as a mean for 3 years in the densities of 2,083~4,166 trees per 10a than in the conventional density of 1,666 trees per 10a. The increase in leaf yield per area was not so high in the densities over 2,083. Leaf yield in the sapling plots was a little higher than that in the graft plots. Topping of shoot tip affected neither on the branch length nor on yield. Yield was higher in the planting spacing with single raws than in that with double raws. Quality of leaves in the densities from 2,083 to 3,333 trees per 10a was relatively good judged based on the results of the pupation rate and cocoon yield and quality.

  • Phytoplasmas were detected consistently in 42 mulberry cultivars showing dwarf disease using DNA analysis by amplification with phytoplasma universal primer pairs P1/P7 (about 1.8 kb and R16F2n/R2 (about 1.2 kb). The point mutation from 42 cultivars of mulberry tree was detected by single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis. The SSCP profiles were clearly observed from all of cultivars in 8% polyacrylamide gel, electrophoresizing for and running 8-15 hrs. at 150V, $10^{\circ}C$. The MD and JWB phytoplasma PCR products was mixed and electrophoresis was performed to detect their polymorphism. In this results, the SSCP profiles of all bands of MD and JWB were analyzed on single lane and were distinct in their each of band patterns. The SSCP analysis was possible to detect of 1.8 kb and 1.2 kb nucleotide size and near close band patterns were distinct by mix of two samples. Previously, it was only possible to detect of point mutation under 600 bp nucleotide sequence by SSCP analysis but this modification of SSCP technique was possible to detect clearly SSCP band patterns of about 1.8 kb and 1.2 kb nucleotides.

  • 1. In the mulberry groves for both rearing of spring and fall, the rate of germination was 74.3 percent and the rate of the unfinished bud was 25.7 percent. 2. When the summer pruning after spring rearing was not worked, new sprouted leaves from the axillary buds of an age old branches was 74.88 percent of germination and the rest from unfinished bud during the spring showed 28.12 percent. 3. In the furrows running from north to south, new buds facing the due north were the worst but towards south-east and north-east were the best in their sprouts. 4. One year-old branches which had been raised without the summer pruning in the bush types of Morus Lhou (ser) Koidz offered a habitat where Apriona Rugico1lis Cherr could live. 5. On the grove of Morus Lhou Koidz cultivated at lower zone under a higher humidity and the shortage of sun light the appearance of Anomoneura Mori Schw was likely to happen very much. 6. One year old branches without the summer pruning produced more leaves owing to a long period of growth than branches with the summer pruning in the fall crops. 7. It is necessary to reconsider a certain distance of planting because of causing, when the summer pruning was not made in the bush plantation, a obstacle of fertilizer operation or the forth coming year's management. 8. It can not be thought the ideal method for us to raise mulberry tree such as Morus Lhou Koidz under natural form and at a short distance of planting (one another). 9. Among the species, Morus alba L. had a great deal of leaves and of the rate of germination per unit length of branch.

  • Mulberry tree twigs (Ramulus mori) contain large amounts of oxyresveratrols and have traditionally been used as herbal medicines because of their anti-inflammatory properties. However, the signaling mechanism by which R. mori exerts its anti-inflammatory action remains to be elucidated. In this study, we observed that R. mori ethanol extracts (RME) exerted an inhibitory effect on the lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced production of the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) in Raw264.7 macrophage cells. Additionally, RME inhibited IL-6 production by blocking the leukotriene B4 receptor-2 (BLT2)-dependent-NADPH oxidase 1 (NOX1)-reactive oxygen species (ROS) cascade, leading to anti-inflammatory activity. Finally, RME suppressed the production of the BLT2 ligands LTB4 and 12(S)-HETE by inhibiting the p38 kinase-cytosolic phospholipase A2-5-/12-lipoxygenase cascade in LPS-stimulated Raw264.7 cells. Overall, our results suggest that RME inhibits the 'BLT2 ligand-BLT2'-linked autocrine inflammatory axis, and that this BLT2-linked cascade is one of the targets of the anti-inflammatory action of R. mori.
