  • This study was carried out to compare pH and chemical properties of dew in three forest stands(Mt. Nam-Seoul, Shingal-Yongin, Hangdong-Pyungchang)from May, 1998 to September, 1999. The results of this study were as follows; The acidity of dew in Seoul, which has a metropolitan environment, measured pH5.57 $\pm$ 0.41. The highest acidity was measured in Yongin(pH5.50 $\pm$ 0.96), while pH in Pyungchang was 6.36 $\pm$ 0.57. Ion concentration in Pyungchang was lower than in other two regions, with a similar tendency of seasonal cation changes to those in Seoul and Yongin. Anion changes in Pyungchang, however, was inconsistent with those in other two regions. Although analyses of correlation coefficients showed that there was no significant correlation between overall ion concentrations and pH of dew, there was highly significant correlations between some cations and anions in Seoul and Yon gin, leading a suggestion that those ions were coupled from one source.

  • Ginkgo biloba L. has been planted in the city as street trees because reported as resistant species to air pollutant. Especially, the trees planted on the street of 'Cheongro', Mt. 'Nam', and 'Jamsil' have been exposed to air pollutant for a long time. This study was conducted to examine chlorophyll contents and genetic variation of Ginkgo biloba in the areas. Chlorophyll contents measured in the above three areas were variable although the the diameter at breast height measured in 'Cheongro' and Mt. 'Nam' were constant. In addition, the result showed positive relation between chlorophyll contents and DBH in this study. Eight enzyme systems were analyzed in megagametophytes which were collected in the areas and separated to two groups based on chlorophyll contents. All the enzymes appeared to be polymorphic : Got-2, Pgi-2, Pgm, Acon, Mnr, Mdh, Skdh, and 6Pgd. The sensitive (S) groups varied from 1.253 to 2.571 in the genetic diversity and the tolerant (T) groups ranged from 1.416 to 2.825. The observed single locus heterozygosities (H$_{0}$) ranged from 0.056 to 0.611 in the S groups, and from 0.179 to 1.643 in the T groups. The expected heterozygosities (H$_{e}$) ranged from 0.208 to 0.629 in the S groups and from 0.321 to 0.658 in the T groups. In addition, the H$_{0}$ values averaged over all loci were 0.326 for the T groups and 0.299 for the S group, respectively. A difference between the two groups was 0.027. The T groups had the unique alleles and genotypes and all the parameters for genetic diversity showed that the T groups had higher genetic diversity than the S groups.s. genetic diversity than the S groups.

  • Phylogenetic relationships of Jeju dogs to other domestic and foreign dog breeds were assessed using mtDNA D-loop sequences. Neighbor-joining trees were constructed using complete sequences (970 bp excluding the tandem repeat region) determined for five Cheju, four Jindo, four Sapsaree, five Pungsan, two of each East and West Laika dogs (Canis familiaris), two gray wolves (Canis lupus) and two coyotes (Canis latrans) and also published complete sequences for dogs. Coyote sequences were used as outgroups. In addition, a total of 214 haplotypes of 598bp D-loop sequences from 30 dog breeds were collected from GenBank and used to investigate genetic structure of population. In the analyses of full D-loop sequence variation and the phylogenetic trees constructed by neighbor-joining method, neither haplotypes nor clades specific for any domestic dog breeds were observed. The inter-species sequence variation (4.51%) between domestic dogs and wolves was much higher than the intra-species sequence variation within domestic dogs (1.63%) and wolves (3.64%). The divergence of the dog and wolf occurred approximately 1~2 million years ago based on these values. The taxa of Jeju dog breed in the phylogenetic tree are clustered separately and intermingled with other taxa of breeds, suggesting that active crossbreeding of Jeju dogs with other domestic breeds.

  • Myoblast fusion depends on mitochondrial integrity and intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ signaling regulated by various ion channels. In this study, we investigated the ionic currents associated with $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ regulation in normal and mitochondrial DNA-depleted(${\rho}0$) L6 myoblasts. The ${\rho}0$ myoblasts showed impaired myotube formation. The inwardly rectifying $K^+$ current ($I_{Kir}$) was largely decreased with reduced expression of KIR2.1, whereas the voltage-operated $Ca^{2+}$ channel and $Ca^{2+}$-activated $K^+$ channel currents were intact. Sustained inhibition of mitochondrial electron transport by antimycin A treatment (24 h) also decreased the $I_{Kir}$. The ${\rho}0$ myoblasts showed depolarized resting membrane potential and higher basal $[Ca^{2+}]_i$. Our results demonstrated the specific downregulation of $I_{Kir}$ by dysfunctional mitochondria. The resultant depolarization and altered $Ca^{2+}$ signaling might be associated with impaired myoblast fusion in ${\rho}0$ myoblasts.

  • The first pine wilt damage in Korea, which called AIDS of pine, was found out at Mt. Geumjeong of Pusan province in 1988. The damage area spread 53's city, Gun, Gu throughout the Gyeongsangnamdo in December 2005 since then find out. The best treatment for these damaged forests is well known as fumigation method after early detection. But early detection by an observer is very difficult because of the damaged forest areas are spread over huge range. Also the access of observer is difficult in condition of Korea topographical characteristic. In this study, an attempt was done to investigation about early detection of pine wilt damage using near infrared CCD camera.

  • Groundwater recharge characteristics in a fractured granite area, Mt. Geumjeong, Korea. was interpreted using bedrock groundwater and wet-land water data. Time series analysis using autocorreclation, cross-correlation and spectral density was conducted for characterizing water level variation and recharge rate in low water and high water seasons. Autocorrelation analysis using water levels resulted in short delay time with weak linearity and memory. Cross-correlation function from cross-correlation analysis was lower in the low water season than the high water season for the bedrock groundwater. The result of water level decline analysis identified groundwater recharge rate of about 11% in the study area.

  • The turnover rates of nitrogen(N), phosphorus(P), calcium(Ca), potassium(K), and sodium(Na) during the decomposition of litter were studied in the Pinus koraiensis forest in Choon Chun and in the Pinus rigida forest in Mt. Gwanak, Seoul. The turnover rates of N, P, K, Ca, and Na were 0.064, 0.068, 0.040, 0.417, and 0.058 for the P. korai ensis litter and 0.049, 0.049, 0.023, 0.346, and 0.058 for the P. rigida litter respectively. The loss of elements follows the order Ca>P>N>Na>K in the P. koraiensis litter and the order Ca>Na>N=P>K in the P. rigida litter. Generally the turnover rates of cations were greater than those of anions.

  • This study were conducted to determine the optimum warm casting rate(0, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500kg/10a) for the yield of food canna in jeju island. The plant height was ranged from 109.4 to 1347cm as organic fertilizer of worm casting increased from 0 to 500kg/10a, but it was no significance between 400 to 500kg/10a. Leaf length, leaf width, number of leaves, number of tillers and bulb per plant were shown higher as the amount of worm casting was increased. Stem diameter were the same trend with plant height response. Fresh yield of food canna increased significantly 134 to 22.6MT/ha as fertilizer rate increased from 0 to 500kg/10a. Fresh weight of above-ground pan and blub were shown the same trend with fresh yield of food canna.
