In this paper, the method of region segmentation using genetic algorithm is proposed for an improvement of efficiency in moving picture coding. A genetic algorithm is the method that searches a large probing space using only a function value for a optimal combination consecutively. By progressing both motion presumption and region segmentation at once, we can assign the motion vector in a image to a small block or a pixel respectively, and transform the capacity of coding and a signal to noise rate into a problem of optimization. That is to say, there is close correlation between region segmentation and motion presumption in motion-compensated prediction coding. This is to optimize the capacity of coding and a S/N ratio. This is to arrange the motion vector in each block of picture according to the state of optimization. Therefore, we examined both the data type of genetic algorithm and the method of data processing to obtain the results of optimal region segmentation in this paper. And we confirmed the validity of a proposed method using the test pictures by means of computer simulation.

Conventional MSE or PSNR based methods for objective picture quality assessment of moving picture coder are not well correlated with subjective human evaluation. In recent years, the design of better objective quality assessment has attracted much intention and several picture quality metrics based on the properties of Human Visual System has been proposed. This paper proposes new metric which is appropriate for objective picture quality assessment of block based moving picture coder by considering frequency sensitivity, inter-intra channel masking and several distortion artifacts caused by block based coding. The experimental results show that the proposed method is good correlated with subjective assessment.
In this paper, we develop an approach toward Joint Source-Channel Coding for MPEG-4(Moving picture Experts Group) based video coding In fixed and mobile reception environment. We have considered channel environment of AWGN and mobile reception. The source coder used MPEG-4 video. the channel coder used RCPC(Rate Compatible Punctured Convolution) and the modulation method used QPSK(Quadrature Phase Shift Keying) modulation. This study determined optimum Trade-off point between source bit rate and channel coding rate In variable channel states. We compared Joint Source/channel Coding method and general constant bit rate transmission. In this results, Joint Source/channel Coding was appeared better performance than constant bit rate transmission.
In this paper, we propose an adaptive multiview video coding scheme based on spatiotemporal correlation analyses using hierarchical B picture (AMVC-HBP) for the integrative encoding performances, including high compression efficiency, low complexity, fast random access, and view scalability, by integrating multiple prediction structures. We also propose an in-coding mode-switching algorithm that enables AMVC-HBP to adaptively select a better prediction structure in the encoding process without any additional complexity. Experimental results show that AMVC-HBP outperforms the previous multiview video coding scheme based on H.264/MPEG-4 AVC using the hierarchical B picture (MVC-HBP) on low complexity for 21.5%, on fast random access for about 20%, and on view scalability for 11% to 15% on average. In addition, distinct coding gain can be achieved by AMVC-HBP for dense and fast-moving sequences compared with MVC-HBP.
The moving picture experts group (MPEG) immersive video (MIV) coding standard has been established to support six degrees of freedom (6DoF) in virtual reality (VR) by transmitting high-quality multiple immersive videos. The MIV exploits two approaches considering tradeoff between bandwidth and computational complexity: 1) eliminating correlation between multi-view videos or 2) selecting representative videos. This paper presents performance analysis on intermediate synthesized views on source view positions and synthesized pose traces using high-efficiency video coding (HEVC) and versatile video coding (VVC) for above-mentioned two approaches.
Recently, a lot of images containing various global movements have been generated by the activation of the photographic equipment such as the drone and the action cam. In this case, when the motion such as rotation, scaling is generated, it is difficult to expect a high coding efficiency in the conventional inter-picture prediction method using the 2D motion vector. In this paper, we propose a video coding method that reflects global motion through homography reference pictures. As a proposed method, there are 1) a method of generating a new reference picture by grasping a global motion relation between a current picture and a reference picture by homography, and 2) a method of utilizing a homography reference picture for inter-picture prediction. The experiment was applied to the HEVC reference software HM 14.0, and the experimental result showed an increase in encoding efficiency of 6.6% based on RA. Especially, the results using the videos with rotational motion have a maximum coding efficiency of 32.6%, which is expected to show high efficiency in video, which is often represented by complex global motion such as drones.

H.264, which is the latest video coding standard of both ITU-T(International Telecommunication Union-Telecommunication standardization sector) and MPEG(Moving Picture Experts Group), adopts new video coding tools such as variable block size motion estimation, multiple reference frames, quarter-pel motion estimation/compensation(ME/MC), 4${\times}$4 Integer DCT(Discrete Cosine Transform), and Rate-Distortion Optimization, etc. These new video coding tools provide good coding of efficiency compared with existing video coding standards as H.263, MPEG-4, etc. However, these new coding tools require the increase of encoder complexity. Therefore, in order to apply H.264 to many real applications, fast algorithms are required for H.264 coding tools. In this paper, when encoder MacroBlock(MB) mode is decided by rate-distortion optimization tool, fast mode decision algorithm by skipping variable block size ME/MC and spatial-predictive coding, which occupies most encoder complexity, is proposed. In terms of computational complexity, the proposed method runs about 4 times as far as JM(Joint Model) 42 encoder of H.264, while the PSNR(peak signal-to-noise ratio)s of the decoded images are maintained.
Seamless streaming of multimedia content via heterogeneous networks to viewers using a variety of devices has been a desire for many multimedia services, for which the multimedia contents should be adapted to usage environments such as network characteristics, terminal capabilities, and user preferences. Scalability in video coding is one of attractive features to meet dynamically changing requirements of heterogeneous networks. Currently a new scalable video coding (SVC) is standardizing in the Joint Video Team (JVT) of the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG), which will be released as Extension 3 of H.264/MPEG-4 AVC. In this paper, we introduce new technologies of SVC and evaluate performance of it especially regarding on overhead bit-rate and coding efficiency to support spatial, temporal, and quality scalability.
The occurrence of a single bit error in transmission bitstream leads to serious temporal and spatial errors. Because moving picture coding as MPEG-2 based on block coding algorithm uses variable length coding and motion compensation coding algorithm. In this paper, we propose algorithm to conceal occurred error of I-frames in transmission channel using data of the neighboring blocks in decoder. We divide a damaged macroblock of I-frame into four sub blocks and compose new macroblock using the neighboring blocks for each sub block. We estimate the block with minimum difference value through block matching with previous frame for new macroblocks and replace each estimated block with damaged sub block in the same position. Through simulation results, the proposed algorithm will be applied to a characteristic of moving with effect and shows better performance than conventional error concealment algorithms from visual and PSNR of view.
The Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) have developed a new standard that promises to outperform the earlier MPEG-4 and H.263 standards. The new standard is called H.264/AVC (Advanced Video Coding) and is published jointly as MPEG-4 Part 10 and ITU-T Recommendation H.264. In particular, the H.264/AVC intra prediction coding provides nine directional prediction modes for every $4{\times}4$ block in order to reduce spatial redundancies. In this paper, an ABS (Adaptive Bit Skip) mode is proposed. In order to achieve coding efficiency, the proposed method can remove the mode bits to represent the prediction mode by using the similarity of adjacent pixels. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves the PSNR gain of about 0.2 dB in R-D curve and reduces the bit rates about 3.6% compared with H.264/AVC.
