Joint spacing is a potent influence in increasing the long term performance of jointed concrete pavement slabs through the control of tensile stress, sealant failure and Load Transfer Efficiency (LTE). Internal Joint Spacing is an empirical and fixed method therefore this study will present the optimum joint spacing considerations depending on various climactic conditions. Calculating the optimum joint spacing eliminates random cracking due to the effect of the environmental loads such as the early behavior of drying shrinkage and heat hydration. Optimum joint spacing is calculated so as not to cause pavement distress by the deterioration of LTE by long term pavement movement. This study shows that the provisional joint spacing is 6-8m. Pavement Distress Prediction Models show that pavement distress has no effect on joint spacing of 8m.
Preloading surcharge method along with vertical drains was adopted to improve the performance of a very soft marine clay deposit. The onshore deposit, located in the Ulsan Bay area, consists of a 2 to 10m thick, very soft, highly compressible marine clay layer developed just below. the sea water level. The initial undrained shear strength of the clay layer was about 0.6 ton/m2. But, the deposit was designed after treatment to support some auxiliary facilities for a new ilo refinery plant, requiring bearing capacities of 3.6 to 5.4 ton/m2 and maximum allowablee settlement of less than 7.5cm. A total of 35, 000 wick drains Ivas installed to expedite drainage during preloading, and surcharge loads of up to 5m above the original ground level were applied in a step-by-step loading sequence to prevent ground failure by excess surcharge loads. An extensive program of field instrumentation was implemented to monitor the behavior of the clay deposit. Measurers!ends included settlements, excess pore pressure and its dissipation, ground farmer level fluctuation, and lateral movement of the so(t clay layer under the preloads. This paper describes the design concepts, construction methods and control procedures used for improvement of the clay layer. It also presents the ground behavior measured during construction, rind comparisons with theoretical predictions.
This study is about design and verification of stress reduction of bearings for wind turbines. In a slewing bearing having a typical four-contact structure, the contact point moves to the end of the raceway due to a large moment load, resulting in a stress concentration. A bearing was designed to reduce such contact point movement. The deformation behavior of typical ball bearings and newly designed bearings was calculated through finite element analysis under ultimate load by replacing the ball with a spring element. The contact stress between the ball and the raceway was calculated by finite element analysis by inputting the deformation behavior analysis result as a boundary condition. The effectiveness of the bearing stress analysis method using spring elements was verified through comparison of the contact stress according to the bearing structure.
In this study, laboratory model test was performed to estimate pullout behavior of pipe type anchor with surface roughness, embedment and diameter. The design of buried pipe anchors in areas of vertical ground movement is governed, in part, by magnitude of the forces imposed on the pipe and displacements at which they are developed. In this paper, uplift resistance and displacement characteristics of pipe anchors caused by ground condition and embedment ratio, surface roughness, pipe diameter through the analysis of pipe anchor model test were compared and analyzed. The test results of the buried pipe showed that as the relative density increases, ultimate uplift resistance increase in 20%. When pipe anchor is failed with the relative density of the ground, the change of surface roughness, it was shown that the deformation increases as the ratio of penetration increases from 2 to 8 in five times approximately. And most anchor-based theories overestimate the breakout factor.

In the construction operation, foundation work should be done in advance for the building structure to be installed. This foundation work include a number of activities such as excavation, ground water prevention, piling, wale installation, etc. Caution should be taken in the operation because the dynamics of earth movement can cause a significant failure in the temporary structure. The temporary structure, therefore, should be constantly monitored to understand its behavior. This paper introduces the USN-based monitoring system to automatically identify the behavior of the temporary structure in addition to visual inspection. The autonomous capability of the monitoring system can increase the safety in the construction operation by providing the detailed structural changes of temporary structures.
The structural behavior of concrete girder in bridges constructed by free cantilever method is time-dependent due to creep and shrinkage of concrete. The constraint effects of longitudinal movement of concrete girders can introduce unfavourable moment into piers. This study is aimed at proposing a method to reduce the moment of piers in bridge constructed by free cantilever method. The method are systematically composed of time-dependent structural analysis of bridges and loading of control force during construction of bridge. Numerical analyses are carried out depending on the parameters such as amount of control force and flexibility of pier. Time-dependent structural behavior shows that moment of pier increases according as pier height decreases. Also, moment of pier decreases when control method are applied. Numerical result of the study represents that time-dependent moment of piers can be controlled effectively by employing the proposed method.

In this study, we derived theoretical equations for the zigzag movement of a leading vehicle, which is the most frequent behavior in train accidents, by using a simplified spring-mass model for the rolling stock. In order to solve the equations of motion, we applied the Runge-Kutta method, which is the typical numerical analysis method used for differential equations. Furthermore, the lateral displacement of the wheel-set at the wheel-rail interface was estimated using kinetic energy. In order to verify the derived equations, we compared the theoretical and simulated results under various collision conditions. The maximum relative deviations of the lateral displacements were 0.8 [%] ~ 4.7 [%] in light collisions and 0.6 [%] ~ 5.1 [%] under derailment conditions. When an accident is simulated, these theoretical equations can be used to predict the overall behavior and obtain the offset of the body-to-body link as the initial perturbation.
To observe the behavior of lateral deformation of buried pipe and the preventing effect of embankment piles against the lateral deformation, a series of full-scale field tests were performed on a reclaimed coastal area. A buried pipe was installed in the west coast undergoing reclamation and embankment was performed by three steps. Then vertical settlement and lateral displacement were measured by the settlement plate and the inclinometer. Embankment pile system were applied to prevent the lateral displacement of buried pipe. Heave of the buried pipe slightly happens during embankment and following settlement. Finally the behavior steadily converged. The preventing effect of the embankment pile was approximately two times stronger than non-reinforcement. Both settlement and lateral displacement appear to be bigger at upper ground and smaller at lower ground.
The characteristics of the spread of a forest fire are generally related to the attributes of combustibles, geographical features, and meteorological conditions, such as wind conditions. The most common methodology used to create a prediction model for the spread of forest fires, based on the numerical analysis of the development stages of a forest fire, is an analysis of heat energy transmission by the stage of heat transmission. When a forest fire breaks out, the analysis of the transmission velocity of heat energy is quantifiable by the spread velocity of flame movement through a physical and chemical analysis at every stage of the fire development from flame production and heat transmission to its termination. In this study, the formula used for the 1-dimensional surface forest fire behavior prediction model, derived from a numerical analysis of the surface flame spread rate of solid combustibles, is introduced. The formula for the 1-dimensional surface forest fire behavior prediction model is the estimated equation of the flame spread velocity, depending on the condition of wind velocity on the ground. Experimental and theoretical equations on flame duration, flame height, flame temperature, ignition temperature of surface fuels, etc., has been applied to the device of this formula. As a result of a comparison between the ROS(rate of spread) from this formula and ROSs from various equations of other models or experimental values, a trend suggesting an increasing curved line of the exponent function under 3m/s or less wind velocity condition was identified. As a result of a comparison between experimental values and numerically analyzed values for fallen pine tree leaves, the flame spread velocity reveals has a error of less than 20%.
This article proposes new method for estimating pedestrian quality of service(QOS) that is useful to changing pedestrian environment by examining pedestrian quality of service as well as developing new method that integrate qualitative variables into the estimating indicators for the pedestrian movement right. Based on survey questionnaire addressed to experts group, the obtained data for the indicators were analyzed through Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP). The results show that pedestrian traffic flow(quantitative figure: 52%), sidewalk geometric(quantitative figure: 16%), sidewalk usage behavior(qualitative figure: 11%) in commercial and business zone pointed out the importance of quantitative indicators such as pedestrian traffic flow, and sidewalk geometric. In addition, the results also show that pedestrian traffic flow(quantitative figure: 30%), sidewalk geometric(quantitative figure : 22%), sidewalk usage behavior(qualitative figure: 20%) indicate the significance of qualitative indicators such as pedestrian's sidewalk usage.
