  • This paper describes a turnout without movable parts for magnetically levitated vehicles with hybrid magnets, which have been studied by the authors in place of streetcars. Their low construction cost and low maintenance is key to their practical use. Magnetic levitation systems using forces of attraction can generate guidance force automatically, but the damping force against lateral motion is negligible. However, the lateral damping characteristic was improved by using divided iron type magnets and rails. Using this turnout without movable parts will facilitate smooth direction switching.

  • A relaxed similarity theory which can be applied to river madels with movable beds is established by modifying existing theory by Einstein and Chien(1954). Experimental data collected from river models with movable beds were used to evaluate the applicability of the proposed theory. Effects of similarity of flow. $\Delta$F$\Delta$M, and similarity of sediment movement, $\Delta$$F_s$, were examined by analyzing the behavior of total river-bed change. The results show that the smaller $\Delta$F$\Delta$M or $\Delta$$F_s$ is, respectively, the larger total sedimentation is. The modified similarity theory established in this study would be useful and practical whenever it is impossible or very difficult to satisfy strict theoretical requirments concerning the river model experiments with movable beds.

  • Among mechanical friction losses in an engine, the piston assembly and cylinder components accounts for the majority of the losses. The movable bore technique has been developed and turned out to be the most reliable technique in measuring the instantaneous friction of piston assembly. The weakness of this system, however, was the presence of the protruded top of movable bore necessary for pressure balancing. Because of the protruded part the piston could not be taken out without disassembling the crankshaft. Present study was carried out with a system of removable top of the movable bore so that it was possible to make frequent piston removals. The effects from engine speed, oil viscosity, engine load and elastic contact pressure of piston rings on the frictional characteristics have been evaluated with the improved equipment. Also, frictions of each member of piston assembly were measured.

  • Numerical analysis of hydrodynamic performance of a movable submerged breakwater was carried out as an eco-friendly marine structure for coastal and harbor protection. Using boundary elements method with two-dimensional frequency-domain reflection and transmission coefficients and wave forces acting on the submerged flat plate were calculated with various submerged depths and respective motion allowable modes. The movable breakwater was found to be more efficient in wave-blocking than the fixed structure. Variation of reflection coefficients was significantly influenced by vertical motion of the body.

  • A micromechanical switch that can be used as a logic gate is described in this paper. This switch consists of fixed input electrodes an output electrode Vcc/GND electrodes and movable plates suspended by crab-leg flexures. for mechanical switching of an electrical signal a parallel plate actuator which comes in contact with output electrode was used. Provided that movable plates are connected to Vcc and a low input voltage(ground signal) is applied to the fixed input electrodes the movable plates are pulled by an electrostatic force between the fixed input electrodes and the movable plates. the proposed micromechanical switch was fabricated by surface micromachining technology with$2\mum$ -thick poly-Si and the measured threshold voltage for ON/OFF switching was 23.5V.

  • In this study, two types of ramjet intake were designed for the flight condition of Mach number 2 and 5 and numerical analysis was performed. In order to widen the flight envelope range(Mach number $2{\sim}6$), movable intake concept was applied. The central body was designed so that the capture area ratio which is one of most important factors of ramjet intake design could be adjusted. And various types of cowl and movable insert part of shell were designed in order to control throat area which could increase total pressure recovery. The numerical results showed that the designed ramjet intake could be applied in various flights Mach number.

  • Continuous rotating SMA actuators require motion conversion mechanisms, so their structure is relatively complex and difficult to realize the miniaturization. Here, a new type of continuous rotating actuator driven by SMA is proposed. It combines the movable tooth drive with SMA drive. The structure and working principle of the integrated movable tooth drive system is introduced. The equations of temperature, stress and strain of memory alloy wires, and the output torque of drive system are given. Using these equations, the temperature, the output forces of the SMA wires, and output torque of the drive system are studied. Results show that the compact drive system could give large output torque. To obtain large output torque plus small fluctuation, large eccentricity and small diameter of the SMA wire should be taken. Combined application of ventilation cooling and high current can increase the rotary speed of the drive system.

  • The movable bracket structure, which is an apparatus for supplying electric power to a running electric locomotive, is applied by a repeated load during the passage of the electric locomotive. Such a repeated load becomes an excitation source that causes screws constituting the movable bracket structure to be loosened. This study was conducted on the causes and countermeasures of the bolt loosening caused by the repeated vibration using a computer simulation. As the result, a simulation model was constructed to enable the dynamic analysis of the movable bracket structure. It could be found that the principal excitation frequency range for the bolt loosening of the movable bracket structure was less than 200 Hz. In addition, the bolts are prevented from being loosened by increasing stiffness of H beams. The vibration mode of a lower band bracket is found to be triggered in a frequency range between 300 and 600 Hz. And the increase in stiffness of the lower band bracket exhibits the effect to avoid the bolt loosening at a frequency range of 200 Hz or more.
