There are many parameters in prediction of forest fire spread. Among others wind and slope factors are considered to be the important parameters in spread of forest fire. Generally, all the inclined planes with same slopes can not have the same wind velocity in complex mountain area. But this effect has been disregarded in complex geometry. In this paper, wind values which have velocity and direction is calculated by applying computational fluid dynamics to the forest geometry. These results are applied for forest fire spreading algorithm with experimental Korean ROS(Rate Of Spread). Finally, the comparison between the simulation and the real forest fire has correspondence about 90%.
To investigate the air mass modification related with Yeongdong Heavy snowfall events, we examined sensible and latent heat fluxes on the East Sea, the energy exchange between atmosphere and ocean in this study. Sensible and latent heats were calculated by a bulk aerodynamic method, in which NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data and NOAA/AVHRR weekly SST data with high resolution were used. Among winter precipitation events in the Yeongdong region, 19 heavy precipitation events $(1995{\sim}2001)$ were selected and classified into three types (mountain, cold-coastal, and warm types). Mountain-type precipitation shows highly positive anomalies of sensible and latent heats over the southwestern part of the East Set When separating them into the two components due to variability of wind and temperature/ specific Humidity, it is shown that the wind components are dominant. Cold-coastal-type precipitation also shows strong positive anomalies of sensible and latent heats over the northern part and over the central-northern part of the East Sea, respectively. It is shown that the sensible heat anomalies are caused mostly by the decrease of surface air temperature. So it can be explained that cold-coastal-type precipitation is closely related with the air mass modification due to cold air advection over warm ocean surface. But in warm-type precipitation, negative anomalies are found in the sensible and latent heat distributions. From this result, it may be postulated that warm-type precipitation is affected by the internal process of the atmosphere rather than the atmosphere-ocean interaction.

Donghae city is one of the most representative cement industrial city in Korea. The area is faced with the East Sea to the East and with high montane region of Tae-Back mountain range to the West. Many pollutant sources of air pollution are located near the coast, but the largest point sources of the region are located at the bottom of the mountain area in Donghae city. The local wind is highly affected by local topography and plays an important role in transport and dispersion of contaminants from the pollution sources. This study was designed to evaluate enhancement of MM5 predictions by using Four Dimensional Data Assimilation (FDDA), the SONDE data and the national meteorological station, data only. The alternative meteorological fields predicted with and without FDDA were used to simulate spatial and temporal variations of NOx in combined with Atmospheric Dispersion Models (CALPUFF). For the modeling domain, the alternative meteorological fields with 1.1 km spatial resolution were interpolated to the CALMET with 0.5 km resolution. The vertical layers set to have 35 and 12 layers for MM5 and CALPUFF, respectively. MM5 with the FDDA did not resulted in significant improvement of meteorological field prediction in Donghae region, which is primarily because of complex geography and wind scheme. The result of CALPUFF, however, showed reduction of uncertainty errors by using the interpolation scheme of the actual measurement data.
A numerical simulation of a heavy snowfall event that occurred 13 January 2008 along the Yeongdong coastal area, was performed using WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) in order to reveal mesoscale structures and to construct a conceptual model showing the meteorological background that caused the large difference in snowfall amounts between the Yeongdong mountain area and the Yeongdong coastal area. The simulation results matched well with various observations such as corresponding 12h-accumulated observed precipitation, surface wind obscrvation, radar echoes, and satellite infrared images. The simulation and the observations showed that the scale of the event was of meso - $\beta$ and meso - $\gamma$ scale. The simulation represented well the mesoscale process causing the large difference in snowfall amounts in the two areas. First, wind flow was kept, to a certain extent, from crossing the mountains due to the blocking effect of the low Froude number (~1). The northeast flow over the adjaccnt sea tumcd northwest as it approachcd the mountains, where it was trapped, allowing so-called cold air damming. Second, a strong convergence area formed where the cold northwest flow along the Yeongdong coastal area and the relatively warm and moist northeast flow advecting toward the coast met, supporting the fonllation of a coastal front. Thus, the vertical motion was strongest over the front located near the coast, leading to the heavy snowfall there rather than in the remote mountain area.
Precipitation and no-precipitation events under the influence of the Siberian high pressure system in Yeondong region, were analysed and classified as four types [obvious precipitation event (OP) type, obvious no-precipitation event (ON) type, ambiguous precipitation event (AP) type and ambiguous no-precipitation event (AN) type], according to the easiness in determining whether to have precipitation or not in Yeongdong region, to help in improving the forecast skill. Concerning the synoptic pressure pattern, for OP type, the ridge of Siberian high extends from Lake Baikal toward Northeast China, and there is a northerly wind upstream of the northern mountain complex (located near the Korean-Chinese border). On the other hand, for ON type, the ridge of Siberian high extends southeastward from Lake Baikal, and there is a westerly wind upstream of the northern mountain complex. The pressure pattern of AP type was similar to the OP type and that of AN type was also similar to ON type. Thus it was difficult to differentiate AP type and OP type and AN type and ON type based on the synoptic pressure pattern only. The four types were determined by U (wind speed normal to the Taebaek mountains) and Froude number (FN). That is, for OP type, average FN and U at Yeongdong coast are ~2.0 and ${\sim}6m\;s^{-1}$, and those at Yeongseo region are 0.0 and $0.1m\;s^{-1}$, respectively. On the contrary, for ON type, average FN and U at Yeongdong coast are 0.0 and $0.2m\;s^{-1}$, and those at Yeongseo region are ~1.0 and ${\sim}4m\;s^{-1}$, respectively. For AP type, average FN and U at Yeongdong coast are ~1.0 and ${\sim}4m\;s^{-1}$, and those at Yeongseo region are 0.0 and $0.2m\;s^{-1}$, whereas for AN type, average FN and U at Yeongdong coast are 0.1 and $0.6m\;s^{-1}$ and those at Yeongseo region are ~1.0 and ${\sim}3m\;s^{-1}$, respectively. Based on the result, a schematic diagram for each type was suggested.

We defined Jeju Wind Castle and analyzed the relationship between Hallasan-Oreum-Batdam, the main subject, for the first time. In Jeju, 1.5m high Batdam(Black Silk Road), 368 Oreums, Hallasan Mountain 1950m are all unique scenery. The verification of this paper demonstrates that Samdasoo's groundwater extraction sea level is equal to the height of Hallasan and that this problem is mathematically complete in neutral plane theory. Donnaeko(700meters above sea level)-Baeknokdamdongneung-Jindallebat-Seongpanak-Gyorae(453 meters)-Witsaeoreum(1700meters) is a rain belt that hits the low-air pressure air-conditioned North Pacific humidity rising from the southeast and the high-pressure cold air of Hallasan Peak. It rains a lot because - and + are neutral plane, which adds to zero. Hallasan is called Jinsan in Jeju history. The answer is Wind Castle. The number of Oreum in Jeju is 369 including Hallasan, and Batdam, which is about 1.5m high, does not collapse even with a typhoon blowing over 50m/s. Because the wind castle's core is 1.5 meters of Batdam and it is a triangular number.

In this paper we interpreted the changes in wind field over complex mountainous terrains. The results of our study can be applied for predicting the direction of fire spread and for establishing strategies for fire prevention. The study area is bounded by $12{\times}12$ km domains of the Samcheok's long-term ecological research (LTER) site located in the east coast, in which a large-fire had occurred from 7 to 13 April 2000. Because of the area's complex topography, we compared the result of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) mesoscale model with those observed by four automated weather stations. The WRF simulation overestimated the wind speed by 5 to 8 m/s (~200%) in comparison with those from four automated weather stations. The wind directions observed by the AWSs were from various directions whereas those from WRF model were mostly west wind at all stations. Overall, the simulations by the WRF mesoscale models were not appropriate for the estimation of microscale wind fields over complex mountainous areas. To overcome such inadequacy of reproducing the wind fields, we employed the ENVI-met model over Samcheok's LTER site. In order to test the model's sensitivity with the terrain effects, experimental simulations were conducted with various initial conditions. The simulation results of the ENVI-met model showed a reasonable agreement in wind speeds (about 70% accuracy) with those of the four AWSs. Also, that the variations in wind directions agreed reasonably well with changes in terrain effect. We concluded that the ENVI-met model is more appropriate in representing the microscale wind field over complex mountain terrains, which is required to predict fire spread and to establish strategies for forest fire prevention.
The eastern coastal area having variability of climate is located within Taebaek mountain range and the east coast of Korea. It is therefore ease to cause the wind damages in paddy field during rice growing season. The wind damages to rice plant in this area were mainly caused by the Fohn wind (dry and hot wind) blowing over the Taebaek mountain range and the cold humid wind from the coast. The dry wind cause such as the white head, broken leaves, cut-leaves, dried leaves, shattering of grain, glume discolouration and lodging, On the other hand the cold humid wind derived from Ootsuku air mass in summer cause such symptom as the poor rice growth, degeneration of rachis brenches and poor ripening. To minimize the wind damages and utilize as a preparatory data for wind injury of rice in future, several experiments such as the selection of wind resistant variety to wind damage, determination of optimum transplanting date, improvement of fertilizer application methods, improvement of soils and effect of wind break net were carried out for 8 years from 1982 to 1989 in the eastern coastal area. The results obtained are summarized as follows. 1. According to available statisical data from Korean meteorological services (1954-1989) it is apperent that cold humid winds frequently cause damage to rice fields from August 10th to September 10th, it is therefore advisable to plan rice cultivation in such a way that the heading date should not be later than August 10th. 2. During the rice production season, two winds cause severe damage to the rice fields in eastern coastal area of Korea. One is the Fohn winds blowing over the Taebaek mountain range and the other is the cold humid wind form the coast. The frequency of occurrence of each wind was 25%. 3. To avoid damage caused by typhoon winds three different varieties of rice were planted at various areas. 4. In the eastern coastal area of Korea, the optimum ripening temperature for rice was about 22.2$^{\circ}C$ and the optimum heading date wad August 10th. The optimum transplanting time for the earily maturity variety was June 10th., medium maturity variety was May 20th and that of late maturity was May 10th by means of growing days degree (GDD) from transplanting date to heading date. 5.38% of this coastal area is sandy loamy soil while 28% is high humus soil. These soil types are very poor for rice cultivation. In this coastal area, the water table is high, the drainage is poor and the water temperature is low. The low water temperature makes it difficult for urea to dissolve, as a result rice growth was delayed, and the rice plant became sterile. But over application of urea resulted in blast disease in rice plants. It is therefore advise that Ammonium sulphate is used in this area instead of urea. 6. The low temperature of the soil inhibits activities of microorganism for phosphorus utilization so the rice plant could not easily absorb the phosphorus in the soil. Therefore phosphorus should be applied in splits from transplanting to panicle initiation rather than based application. 7. Wind damage was severe in the sandy loamy soil as compared to clay soils. With the application of silicate. compost and soil from mointain area. the sand loamy soil was improved for rice grain colour and ripening. 8. The use of wind break nets created a mocro-climate such as increased air. soil and water temperature as well as the reduction of wind velocity by 30%. This hastened rice growth, reduced white head and glume discolouration. improved rice quality and increased yield. 9. Two meter high wind break net was used around the rice experimental fields and the top of it. The material was polyethylene sheets. The optimum spacing was 0.5Cm x 0.5Cm. and that of setting up the wind break net was before panicle initiation. With this set up, the field was avoided off th cold humid wind and the Fohn. The yield in the treatment was 20% higher than the control. 10. After typhoon, paddy field was irrigated deeply and water was sprayed to reduce white head, glume discolouration, so rice yield was increased because of increasing ripening ratio and 1, 000 grain weight.
The NSCAT(NASA Scatterometer) carried by the japanese Advanced Earth Observing Satellite(ADEOS) was the first high resolution(25 km) device for the direct wind measurement over the ocean. Even it was ceased to operate in lune of 1977 because of the power failure, it gave the first opportunity to the marine meteorologists to study the direct measured ocean wind during its 9 months of operation, especially around Korea. This study is to show monthly mean ocean wind and wind stress curl fields around Korea from January, 1997 to June, 1997. Mean ocean winds in January are predominantly northwesterly and the strongest wind(12 m/s) is found near Vladivostok. The winds in the western East Sea are strongly inf1uenced by the mountain range in Korea and these topographically influenced winds make about five times larger wind stress curl fields than previous estimates based on the weather maps. The calculation of Sverdrup transport in the East Sea shows the possibility of the directional change of the East Korean Cold Current from southward to northward direction caused by the winter wind. The downwelling area near North Korea has maximum estimated speed of 45 m in january and this wind induced downwelling makes good condition for the formation of Intermediate East Sea Water together with vigorous mixing by the strong wind.

The coupled model (SMART) of dynamic meteorology model and particle dispersion model was developed. The numerical experiment on the relationship between change of land use and diffusion behavior in complex terrain was carried out using this model. It tried to investigate the change of particle diffusion behavior and local weather under the condition in which land-land breeze and sea breeze and mountain breeze intermingled. The numerical experiment results are as follows; 1) The more complicated local circulation field of the interaction of sea breeze, mountain breeze and Land -land breeze is formed. Then, the region circulation in which the urbanization is specific by location of the region is strengthened and is weakened. 2) Though in the region with dominant sea breeze, Land-land breeze does not appear directly, the progress of the sea wind to the inland is affected. 3) In the prediction of the air diffusion, emission high quality and accurate information of the emission site are important. That is to say, the dispersion predicting result which emission high quality and small error of the site perfectly vary for Land - land breeze in the effect may be brought about.
