Objective:The aims of this study are to understand the effects of task (pushing, pulling, and clockwise and counter clockwise twisting) direction on the maximal output and their grip forces and to explore the relationship between the maximal output and the grip forces. Background: Knowing the normative maximal grip force is not enough to design a good hand tool. The industrial designers should understand the required grip forces in various motions toward a specific direction to make an effective and efficient hand tool. Method: Eighteen healthy volunteers participated in the series of isometric maximal output force tests. A custom-made force measuring equipment collected the output and the grip forces for three seconds. Force measurements along the vertical, coronal and sagittal axes were randomly repeated three times. Results: The pulling was strongest and the pushing was weakest in all directions. The effect of motion on the output forces varied in different directions. The corresponding grip force increased in the order of pushing, pulling, clockwise twisting, and counter clockwise twisting in all directions. The maximal output and their grip forces were highly correlated but the relationship was affected by motion and direction. The regression coefficient was greatest in pulling and smallest in clockwise twisting. Conclusion: The effect of motion on the output forces varied in different directions. The maximal output and their grip forces were correlated but the relationship was affected by motion and direction. Application: Findings of this study can be valuable information for industrial designers to develop more productive hand tools and work stations to help preventing the musculoskeletal disorders at work.
In case of a single input single output (SISO) system with a nonlinear term, a signal compression method is useful to identify a system because the equivalent impulse response of linear part from the system can be extracted by the method. However even though the signal compression method is useful to estimate uncertain parameters of the system, the method cannot be directly applied to a unique system with hysteresis characteristics because it cannot estimate all of the two different dynamic properties according to its motion direction. This paper proposes a signal compression method with a pre-processor to identify a unique system with two different dynamics according to its motion direction. The pre-processor plays a role of separating expansion and retraction properties from the system with hysteresis characteristics. For evaluating performance of the proposed approach, a simulation to estimate the assumed unknown parameters for an arbitrary known model is carried out. A motion platform with several single-rod cylinders is a representative unique system with two different dynamics, because each single-rod cylinder has expansion and retraction dynamic properties according to its motion direction. The nominal constant parameters of the motion platform are experimentally identified by using the proposed method. As its application, the identified parameters are applied to a design of a sliding mode controller for the simulator.
Autonomous vehicles equipped with cameras, such as robots, fork lifts, or cars, can be found frequently in industry sites or usual life. Those cameras show planar motion because the vehicles usually move on a plane. Sometimes the cameras in fork lifts moves vertically. The cameras under planar and vertical motion provides useful properties for horizontal or vertical lines that can be found easily and frequently in our daily life. In this paper, some useful back-projection properties are suggested, which can be applied to horizontal or vertical line images captured by a camera under planar and vertical motion. The line images are back-projected onto a virtual plane that is parallel to the planar motion plane and has the same orientation at the camera coordinate system regardless of camera motion. The back-projected lines on the virtual plane provide useful information for the world lines corresponding to the back-projected lines, such as line direction, angle between two horizontal lines, length ratio of two horizontal lines, and vertical line direction. Through experiments with simple plane polygons, we found that the back-projection properties were useful for estimating correctly the direction and the angle for horizontal and vertical lines.
Applying image processing techniques to education, the face of the learner is photographed, and expression and movement are detected from video, and the system which estimates degree of concentration of the learner is developed. For one learner, the measuring system is designed in terms of estimating a degree of concentration from direction of line of learner's sight and condition of the eye. In case of multiple learners, it must need to measure each concentration level of all learners in the classroom. But it is inefficient because one camera per each learner is required. In this paper, position in the face region is estimated from video which photographs the learner in the class by the difference between frames within the motion direction. And the system which detects the face direction by the face part detection by template matching is proposed. From the result of the difference between frames in the first image of the video, frontal face detection by Viola-Jones method is performed. Also the direction of the motion which arose in the face region is estimated with the migration length and the face region is tracked. Then the face parts are detected to tracking. Finally, the direction of the face is estimated from the result of face tracking and face parts detection.
This paper introduces a new technique for block is matching motion estimation. Since the temporal correlation of the image sequence, the motion vector of a block is highly related to the motion vector of the same coordinate block in the previous image frame. If we can obtain useful and enough information from the motion vector of the same coordinate block of the previous frame, the total number of search points used to find the motion vector of the current block may be reduced significantly. Using that idea, an efficient predicted direction search algorithm (PDSA) for block matching algorithm is proposed. Based on the direction of the blocks of the two successive previous frames, if the direction of the to successive blocks is same, the first search point of the proposed PDSA is moved two pixels to the direction of the block. The searching process after moving the first search point is processed according to the fixed search patterns. Otherwise, full search is performed with search area $\pm$2. Simulation results show that PSNR values are improved up to the 3.4dB as depend on the image sequences and improved about 1.5dB on an average. Search times are reduced about 20% than the other fast search algorithms. Simulation results also show that the performance of the PDSA scheme gives better subjective picture quality than the other fast search algorithms and is closer to that of the FS(Full Search) algorithm.
This research deals with the nonlinearities of rocking vibration associated with impact and sliding on the rocking behavior of rigid block under two dimensional sinusoidal excitation which has different frequencies in two excitation direction. The varied excitation direction influences not only the rocking response but also the sliding motion and the rocking response shape. Chaotic responses are observed in wider excitation amplitude region, when the frequencies in each excitation direction are different. The complex behavior of chaotic response, in the phase space, is related with the trajectory of base excitation and sliding motion.
In this research was to analyze 3-D kinematics variables for handspring of basic motion in the heavy gymnastics in order to investigate kinematical difference between expert and novice. Therefore, the purpose of this research was provide quantitative information, systematic provision, rules, establishment of basic skill for improving skill and teaching athletes. And in the research, results were as followings. 1. In the time variables, total time was that expert took 0.745sec and novice took 0.829sec, and as duration time of each event, expert was faster than novice in the all motion event except till second event of the preparation motion. 2. In the center of body variables, vertical direction variables, the displacement of body center hight was that expert showed 61.26% and novice showed 54.48% in the third event of all motion, also all event were showed expert was higher displacement than novice except first of event in preparatory stage. 3. In the angle displacement of main joint, the right direction was that expert showed 154.12degree and novice showed 174.85degree and the left direction was that expert showed 159.29degree and novice showed 171.46degree In the second event of main joint curved point at the same time hand was reached floor. In the angle displacement of knee joint in the third event of all motion, expert showed 155.25degree and novice showed 154.00degree In right, and expert showed 155.24degree and novice showed 154.55degree in left. In this result, both were same motion type. In the angle displacement of hip joint in the third event of the all motion, expert showed 142.80degree and novice showed 134.17degree in right, and expert showed 140.28degree and novice showed 144.94degree in left. In this result, motion pattern of expert was same both sides, but novice was different. According to the results, to increase efficiency of motion and aesthetic effect in the all motion, it should stretch displacement and height of body center and make similarly angle of right and left joint.
In this study, a new algorithm for canceling MRI artifacts through the translational motion of image plane is presented. Bloating is often makes problems in a clinical diagnosis. Assuming that the head moves up and down due to breathing, rigid translational motions in only y(phase encoding axis) direction is treated. First, we notice that the x directional motion corresponds to a shift of the x directional spectrum of the MRI signal, and the non zero area of the spectrum just corresponds to x axis projected area of the density function. So the motion is estimated by tracing the edges of the spectrum, and the x directional motion is canceled by shifting the spectrum in inverse direction. Next, the y directional motion is canceled using a new constraint, with which the motion component and the true image component can be separated. Finally, the effectiveness of this algorithm is shown by using a phantom with simulated motions.

This research proposes a modified particle filter to increase the accuracy of vehicle tracking in a noisy and occluded medium. In our proposed method for vehicle tracking, the direction angle of a target vehicle is calculated. The angular difference between the motion direction of the target vehicle and each particle of the particle filter is observed. Particles are filtered and weighted depending on their angular distance to the motion direction. Those particles moving in a direction similar to that of the target vehicle are assigned larger weights; this, in turn, increases their probability in a given likelihood function (part of the process of estimation of a target's state parameters). The proposed method is compared against a condensation algorithm. Our results show that the proposed method improves the stability of a particle filter tracker and decreases the particle consumption.
Diverter is an essential element in gravimetric calibration method of flowmeter. Error of diverter are influenced by flow velocity profile of nozzle outlet, motion velocity of diverter and detecting location. That's why, time detection position of diverter is tuned through repetitive test for minimizing error of diverter. Further the diverter must be compared with the other institutions test since the influence on the accuracy of the flow meter used in the test. In this paper, errors (flow velocity profile of nozzle outlet, motion velocity of diverter and detecting location) of diverter are decreased by produced uni-direction diverter and error of gravimetric calibration system is decreased. Uni-direction diverter is calibrated by gravimetric calibration system with precision flowmeter, the flowmeter is calibrated by pipe prover and other institutions and uni-direction diverter is evaluated. Uni-direction diverter is not influenced by flow velocity profile of nozzle outlet, motion velocity of diverter and detecting location. As a result, Uni-direction diverter can calibrate in wider scope since increasing ratio of maximum and minimum flow rate of uni-direction diverter.
