The torsional vibration of the propulsion shafting system equipped with viscous damper is investigated. The equivalent system is modeled by a two mass softening system with Duffing's oscillator and the vibratory motion is described by non-linear differential equations of second order. The damper casing is fixed at the front-end of crankshaft and the damper's inertia ring floats in viscous silicon fluid inside of the camper casing. The excitation frenquency is proportional to the rotational speed of engine. The steady state response of the equivalent system is analyzed by the computer and for this analyzing, the harmonic balance method is adopted as a non-linear vibration analysis technique. Frequency response curves are obtained for 1st order resonance only. Jump phenomena are explained. The discriminant for the solutions of the steady state response is derived. Both theoretical and measured results of the propulsion shafting system are compared with and evaluated. As a result of comparisions with both data, it was confirmed that Duffing's oscillator can be used in the modeling of the propulsion shafting system attached with viscous damper with non-linear stiffness.

It has been reported that long-term exercise on a treadmill (running machine) may cause injury to the joints in a human's lower extremities. Previous works related to analysis of human walking motion are, however, mostly based on clinical statistics and experimental methodology. This paper proposes an analytical methodology. Specifically, this work deals with a comparison of normal walking on the ground and walking on a treadmill in regard to the external and internal impulses exerted on the joints of a human's lower extremities. First, a modeling procedure of impulses, impulse geometry, and impulse measure for the human lower extremity model will be briefly introduced and a new impulse measure for analysis of internal impulse is developed. Based on these analytical tools, we analyze the external and internal impulses through a planar 7-linked human lower extremity model. It is shown through simulation that the human walking on a treadmill exhibits greater internal impulses on the knee and ankle joints of the supporting leg when compared to that on the ground. In order to corroborate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology, a force platform was developed to measure the external impulses exerted on the ground for the cases of the normal walking and walking on the treadmill. It is shown that the experimental results correspond well to the simulation results.

Because of the fast changing car design and increasing facilities, manufacturing process of cars is getting more complex now a days. Particularly, car manufacturing system that consist of automated devices, applies various simulation techniques to validate device motion and detect collision. To cope with this problem, traditional manufacturing system deployed test-run with the real devices. However, increased computing power in a contemporary manufacturing system changes it into realistic 3D simulation environment. Similarly, managed device data that was generated using 2D traditionally, can be converted to 3D realistic simulation. The existing problem with 3D simulation is disjoint data interaction between different work stations. Consequently, JIGs, fixing the car part accurately, are changed according to fixing position on the part or a part shape properties. In practice, the 3D JIG data has to be managed according to kinematic information, but not of its features. However, generating kinematic information to the 3D model repeatedly according to frequent change in part is not explained in current literatures. To fill this knowledge gap, this paper suggests an improving method of rendering 3D JIG kinematics information to simulation model. Thereafter, it shows the result of implementation.
Fretting, which is a special type of wear, is defined as small amplitude relative motion along the contacting interface between two materials. The structural integrity of steam generators in nuclear power plants is very much dependent upon the fretting wear characteristics of Inconel 690 U-tubes. In this study, a finite element model that can simulate fretting wear on the secondary side of the steam generator was developed and used for a quantitative investigation of the fretting wear phenomenon. Finite element modeling of elastic contact wear problems was performed to demonstrate the feasibility of applying the finite element method to fretting wear problems. The elastic beam problem, with existing solutions, is treated as a numerical example. By introducing a control parameter s, which scaled up the wear constant and scaled down the cycle numbers, the algorithm was shown to greatly reduce the time required for the analysis. The work rate model was adopted in the wear model. In the three-dimensional finite element analysis, a quarterly symmetric model was used to simulate cross tubes contacting at right angles. The wear constant of Inconel 690 in the work rate model was taken as $K=26.7{\times}10^{-15}\;Pa^{-1}$ from experimental data obtained using a fretting wear test rig with a piezoelectric actuator. The analyses revealed donut-shaped wear along the contacting boundary, which is a typical feature of fretting wear.
This paper proposes a controller design for an omnidirectional mobile platform (OMP) with three wheels using backstepping control. A kinematic model and dynamic model of the system are presented. Based on the dynamic modeling, a backstepping controller is designed to stabilize the OMP when following a desired path. The controller is designed based on a backstepping control theory. It includes two steps: first, a virtual state and a stability function are introduced. Second, Lyapunov functions for the system are chosen and an equation for the virtual control that makes the system stabile is obtained. The system stability is guaranteed by the Lyapunov stability theory. The simulation and experimental results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller.
A noncircular cutting such as a piston cutting has depended on the copy-machining because of its complex shape. But the copy-machining needs a master model and brings about a low quality of the piston caused by being worn out of the master model. And the lower cutting speed reduces the productivity. In this paper, for solving these problems, a specialized software system and its subsequent procedure are presented. The shape of a piston consists of an oval, an offset, recesses, and eccentricities. The paper describes these shapes as a consistent equation that is a function of the rotational angle and the position of longitudinal direction(Z-axis). It is simple to define the characteristic geometry of a piston and to generate a tool path for CNC machining. This paper proposes the a proper structure of a 4-axes CNC(Computerized Numerical Control) lathe for machining the piston. As well as X-axis and Z-axis, are attached to the machine a C-axis for rotation and a Y-axis for higher speedy prismatic motion parallel to X-axis.

This study developed a gesture recognition method using Kinect sensor and proposed a fighting action control interface. To extract the pattern features of a gesture, it used a method of extracting them in consideration of a body rate based on the shoulders, rather than of absolute positions. Although the same gesture is made, the positional coordinates of each joint caught by Kinect sensor can be different depending on a length and direction of the arm. Therefore, this study applied principal component analysis in order for gesture modeling and analysis. The method helps to reduce the effects of data errors and bring about dimensional contraction effect. In addition, this study proposed a modified matching algorithm to reduce motion restrictions of gesture recognition system.
In this study the finite element method is utilized to predict the deflection and vibration characteristics of rectangular plates made of saturated porous functionally graded materials (PFGM) within the framework of the third order shear deformation plate theory. Material properties of PFGM plate are supposed to vary continuously along the thickness direction according to the power-law form and the porous plate is assumed of the form where pores are saturated with fluid. Various edge conditions of the plate are analyzed. The governing equations of motion are derived through energy method, using calculus of variations while the finite element model is derived based on the constitutive equation of the porous material. According to the numerical results, it is revealed that the proposed modeling and finite element approach can provide accurate deflection and frequency results of the PFGM plates as compared to the previously published results in literature. The detailed mathematical derivations are presented and numerical investigations are performed while the emphasis is placed on investigating the effect of the several parameters such as porosity volume fraction, material distribution profile, mode number and boundary conditions on the natural frequencies and deflection of the PFGM plates in detail. It is explicitly shown that the deflection and vibration behaviour of porous FGM plates are significantly influenced by these effects. Numerical results are presented to serve as benchmarks for future analyses of FGM plates with porosity phases.
This paper examines the ice cover effects on the seismic response of concrete gravity dam-reservoir-foundation interaction systems subjected to a horizontal earthquake ground motion. ANSYS program is used for finite element modeling and analyzing the ice-dam-reservoir-foundation interaction system. The ice-dam-reservoir interaction system is considered by using the Lagrangian (displacementbased) fluid and solid-quadrilateral-isoparametric finite elements. The Sariyar concrete gravity dam in Turkey is selected as a numerical application. The east-west component of Erzincan earthquake, which occurred on 13 March 1992 in Erzincan, Turkey, is selected for the earthquake analysis of the dam. Dynamic analyses of the dam-reservoir-foundation interaction system are performed with and without ice cover separately. Parametric studies are done to show the effects of the variation of the length, thickness, elasticity modulus and density of the ice-cover on the seismic response of the dam. It is observed that the variations of the length, thickness, and elasticity modulus of the ice-cover influence the displacements and stresses of the coupled system considerably. Also, the variation of the density of the ice-cover cannot produce important effects on the seismic response of the dam.
