  • Mathematical morphology based on set theory is easy to be implemented in parallel and can be applied to various fields in image analysis. Particularly mophological pattern spectrum can detect critical scales in an image object and quantify various aspects of the shape-size content. In this paper, texture classification using pattern spectrum based on morphological subband decomposition is porposed. The low-low band extracts pattern spectrum features, and the high-low, low-high, and high-high bands extrack the structural information. This approach has the advantages of efficient information extraction, less time-consuming, high accuacy, less computation, and parallel implementation.

  • Isolated primary tricuspid insufficiency except Ebstein`s anomaly is rare disease. Recently we experienced two cases of isolated primary tricuspid insufficiency and treated successfully with annuloplasty or valve replacement. We could not classify our case as one of the classification of isolated tricuspid insufficiency, because the morphology and microscopic finding did not suggest any similar variety.

  • The presence of radix entomolaris (RE) in a mandibular first molar is a common occurrence in certain ethnic groups, but the presence of RE in a mandibular second molar is a rare occurrence. In the present case, RE was identified from preoperative radiographs and confirmed using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). The access cavity was modified to locate the RE. Cleaning and shaping were performed with nickel-titanium rotary instruments. Obturation was completed with gutta-percha cones using AH Plus (Dentsply Detrey GmbH) as sealer. From the CBCT axial images, the RE was determined to have a Type III curvature by the De Moor classification, Type B separate RE by the Carlsen and Alexandersen classification, and radiographically, a Type i image by the Wang classification. The presence of RE in the mandibular second molar makes it essential to anticipate and treat the distolingual root canal. This case report highlights the usefulness of CBCT for assessing RE in the mandibular second molar, which can help the clinician in making a confirmatory diagnosis and assessing the morphology of the root canal.

  • A shared-weight neural network that performed classification based on the features extracted with the fuzzy morphological operation is introduced. Learning rules for the structuring elements, degree of membership, and weighting factors are also precisely described. In application to handwritten digit recognition problem, the fuzzy morphological shared-weight neural network produced the results which are comparable to the state-of-art for this problem.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between rotational disk displacement (DD) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and the dentoskeletal morphology. Methods: Women aged > 17 years were included in this study. Each subject had a primary complaint of malocclusion and underwent routine cephalometric examinations. They were divided into five groups according to the findings on sagittal and coronal magnetic resonance images of their TMJs: bilateral normal disk position, bilateral anterior DD with reduction (ADDR), bilateral rotational DD with reduction (RDDR), bilateral anterior DD without reduction (ADDNR), and bilateral rotational DD without reduction (RDDNR). Twenty-three cephalometric variables were analyzed, and the Kruskal-Wallis test was used to evaluate differences in the dentoskeletal morphology among the five groups. Results: Patients with TMJ DD exhibited a hyperdivergent pattern with a retrognathic mandible, unlike those with a normal disk position. These specific skeletal characteristics were more severe in patients exhibiting DD without reduction than in those with reduction, regardless of the presence of rotational DD. Rotational DD significantly influenced horizontal and vertical skeletal patterns only in the stage of DD with reduction, and the mandible exhibited a more backward position and rotation in patients with RDDR than in those with ADDR. However, there were no significant dentoskeletal differences between ADDNR and RDDNR. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that rotational DD of TMJ plays an important role in the dentoskeletal morphology, particularly in patients showing DD with reduction.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine whether predicting maturation of the midpalatal suture is possible by classifying its morphology on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images and to investigate relationships with other developmental age indices. Methods: The morphology of the midpalatal suture was assessed by using CBCT images of 99 patients. Axial plane images of the midpalatal suture were classified into five stages according to the classification scheme. To make the assessment more accurate, the morphology and fusion of the midpalatal suture were additionally investigated on coronal cross-sectional planar images and volume-rendered images. Bone age was evaluated using the hand and wrist method (HWM) and cervical vertebrae method (CVM); dental age (Hellman's index), sex, and chronological age were also assessed. To evaluate relationships among variables, Spearman's rho rank test was performed along with crosstabs using contingency coefficients. Results: The HWM and CVM showed strong correlations with the maturation stage of the midpalatal suture, while other indices showed relatively weak correlations (p < 0.01). Through crosstabs, the HWM and CVM showed high association values with CBCT stage; the HWM demonstrated slightly higher values (p < 0.0001). Based on the HWM, the midpalatal suture was not fused until stage 6 in both sexes. Conclusions: Among developmental age indices, the HWM and CVM showed strong correlations and high associations, suggesting that they can be useful in assessing maturation of the midpalatal suture.

  • It is a wrong decision to use only topographic and geological maps for the study of pediment morphology in Korea. For the study of pediment morphology it is necessary to survey the earth structure by field techniques. In Korea, pediments are mostly found in granite areas with hardrock cover. But, pediments also developed in gneiss areas and what is worse in limestone areas. So, all areas in Korea developed pediment morphology. Only in South Korea pediments show a direction from south to north or from west to east. They developed only in right angles to each other, either parallel or in right angles to the strike, depending on the bedrock structure. Pediments are found in two levels. The upper level pediments are correlated with the lower level erosion surface. Besides this pediments are found in Hoenggye-ri of the Taegwolryong area in a third level 800m above sea level. The pediments developed in basins, at the lower margins of steep slopes dividing three levels of erosion surfaces and around the residual mountains on the erosion surfaces. The first belong to the early stage of pedimentation, the second to the middle stage and the third to the last stage. Also, in Korea monadnock and residual mountain have developed the pediments are correlated the slope of the hinter mountains. Akagki states that the only pedimentation times have been times of arid climate and that they are dissected by gulley erosion with climatic change, but writer's study proves that pedimentation takes place with eustatic movement, reckless defore-station and convectional rain. These facts indicate that the landforms, geological character and process of erosional cycle of the pediments in Korea resemble much those in the Chugoku Mountains of south wertern Japan, but they are larger in scale than those in the Chugoku Mountains. In conclusion, while Akagki emphasizes the geological character and climatic change in pedimentation, the writer studies prove that eustatic movements, especially the sea level rise after the Wurm age are important factors for pedimentation. Besides this the author's studies allow a classification of gentle slopes.

  • Objectives : The consumption of licorice is large in Korea, but domestic production is insufficient due to the lack of adaptability. This study aimed to provide a morphological basis for adding interspecific hybrid licorice with improved adaptability to pharmacopoeia. Methods : This study was to establish identification criteria for the original plants, external and internal morphology of the authentic herbal medicines (Glycyrrhiza uralensis, G. glabra and G. inflata), market products and artificially interspecific hybrid forms of licorice. For this purpose, previous studies were investigated and visual and histological observations were carried out. We focused on the internal morphology by microscopic observation for securing objectivity. Finally, we proposed the identification keys for precise classification of each part. Results : 1) Original plant : Licorice species in the compendium were distinguished by the number of leaflets, presence of hair on the fruit, curvature and swelling of the fruit. 2) External morphology : Licorice species were distinguished by degree of powderiness, tearing gap, radial structure in the cross section and existence of protrusion of outer epidermis. 3) Internal morphology : Licorice species were distinguished by the degree of development of phloem fiber bundle, development of obliterated sieve, whether the secondary medullary ray are branched. In the case of interspecific hybrids, the characteristics of both species used for hybridization were mixed in all observation methods. Conclusions : These results suggest that the interspecific crossbred licorice is suitable for the pharmacopoeial standard. Therefore, it can be applied as a herbal medicine through additional supplementary study.

  • Objectives: In order to establish a base for proper treatment and management of patients with dermal problems through correct diagnosis, I considered the naming rule for dermatology in Oriental Medicine, referring to the dermatology literature compared to western medicine. In addition, this paper examines the characteristic classification of dermatology. Methods: I examined the naming rule of dermatology in Oriental Medicine and then compared the disease names in Oriental and Western medicine and the characteristic classification of dermatology referred to the records. Results: The dermal diseases have been named according to their colors and morphologies, causes, progress of symptoms, recurrent sites, the character of distribution, recurrent seasons, ages, the character of patients' jobs and locations. Sometimes some have been named by referring to their main morphologies, sites, causes, colors and seasons synthetically. However it was found some names for dermal diseases, even though the same diseases, had been named differently according to for example: historical times, condition of locations and the quality of doctors whose process of naming developed and changed over time. The relationship between Oriental and Western medicine of each name for dermal diseases is basically divided into 5 types: same names - same diseases; same names but different diseases; same diseases but different names; one disease with multiple names; and one name with multiple diseases. Considering the methods of classification, these were generally achieved according to their places of origin. It is a method unique to Oriental medicine that we classified some dermal diseases into 疥, 癬, 瘡, 風, 丹, 疱, 疹, 癰, 痘, 疽 and so on and it is very easy to diagnose which part they belong to. This was classified by putting first the causes of diseases; for instance: viruses, bacteria, fungi. Sometimes, however there was a problem, connected to the classification of morphology. Conclusions: I suggest that we need to unify and refine dermatological terms in Oriental Medicine in order to establish a base for proper treatment and management of patients with dermal problems through correct diagnoses.
