The west coast of the Korean Peninsula is famous for its large tidal range (up to 9 m) and vast tidal flats. With comparison the sedimentary environments of open and close tidal flat using remote sensing, we select Kanghwa tidal flat and Hwang-Do tidal flat in Cheonsu Bay. Prior to surface sediment discrimination using remote sensing, sedimentary environments including intertidal OEM, hydraulic condition, and relationship between grain size and various tidal condition are investigated. Remote sensing has the potential to provide synoptic information of intertidal environments. The objectives of this study are: (i) to generate an intertidal digital elevation model (OEM) using the waterline method of Lansat TM/ETM+, (ii) to investigate the tidal channel distribution using texture analysis, and (iii) to analyze the relationship between surface grain size by using in-situ data and intertidal OEM and tidal channel density by using high-resolution satellite data such as IKONOS and Kompsat EOC. The results demonstrate that satellite remote sensing is an efficient and effective tool for a surface sediment discrimination and long term morphologic change estimation in tidal flats.
The water celery, Oenanthe Javanica DC., is a perennial herb which mostly grows on a damp ground or a streamside. The water celery is widely distributed in Korea, Japan, china, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia and the other countries. From ancient times, the water celery has widely been used for food or medicine. In herbal medicine, the water celery has a medical actions which are defervescence, diuresis, jaundice, edema, hypotensor, haematic, angiostasis, sthenia, appetizer. Recently, studies on the water celery are briskly being conducted. For example, studies on the morphologic property and classifications of origin of the water celery, studies on the chemical constituents of the water celery which contains vitamins, proteins and amino acids, studies on the bio activities of the water celery which contains flavonoids. However, there is not studies of hematological changes in dogs administrated the water celery until now. Consicontly, this study was conducted to observed the hematological changes in dogs administrated excessive amount of the water celery crude juice for a long period. In this studies, all dogs showed significantly decrease of the PCV and Hb, and increase of the WBC, GSH and reticulocytes, but did not significantly change in the RBC, MCV, MCHC and Met-Hb.
A dead male Jeju weasel with clinical signs of severe dehydration and moribund was submitted for the necropsy. Grossly, purple-red ecchymoses were scattered in the surface of the entire lungs. Milky-white mucoid materials occupied in the left bronchial lumens. Histopathologically, an adult worm with thick cuticle layer surrounded by chronic inflammatory cells was embedded in the left caudal lung lobe. Numerous oval or barrel-shaped parasitic eggs with muco-purulent exudates were observed in the dilated bronchus of another section of left caudal lobe. Operculate parasitic eggs showed typical morphologic characteristics such as barrel shape with asymmetry bipolar plugs and thick bi-layered wall. Based on the histopathologic findings and morphological characteristics of parasitic eggs in the pulmonary tissue section, this case was diagnosed as verminous pneumonia associated Eucoleus aerophilus infection in Jeju weasel.
This is to investigate the difference between craniofacial correlation of Angle's class III malocclusion and that of normal occlusion. For this investigation, 28 adult males and famales, who have class III malocclusion, and 35 adult males and 46 adult famals., who have normal occlusion were selected to measure actual dimension of cranial base and to investigate ratio of various parts of maxillofacial skeleton against cranial base. Class III malocclusion were, also , classified based on SNA and SNB angle in normal range. Results were as follows. 1. In class III malocclusion, actual dimension of cranial base were appeared to be less than normal occlusion in both sex. 2. In class III malocclusion, values were less than normal occlusion in BN/ptm-A in both sex, but had no significance between two. 3. In class III malocclusion, ramal inclination, mandible inclination, BN/Go-Pog, lower genial angle were appeared to be greater. Thus, characteristic mandibular protrusive appearance of class III malocclusion was due to relative ratio and morphologic characteristic of mandibular body dimension against cranial base. 4. In class III malocclusion, upper incisors were labially tilted and lower incisors were lingually tilted compared to normal occlusion. 5. In typing of class III malocclusion, the most common type was found to be one which maxillas were in normal range, while mandibles were in protrusive tendency.
Background: Capparis spinosa L., a Uygur medicine, had been shown to have anti-tumor activity in our early experiments with an N-butanol extract (CSBE) as its active fraction. However, the mechanisms responsible for its effects are not clearly understood. Here, we report that treatment of SGC-7901 cells with CSBE resulted in dose-dependent reduction of cell viability and induction of apoptosis. Materials and Methods: To observe the inhibitory and killing effects of CSBE on SGC-7901, the SRB method was adopted, apoptosis being observed by electron microscopy. To clarify the mechanisms of apoptosis, Western blot and enzyme-labeled methods were used to examine the release of cytochrome c (Cyt c) and the activation of the caspase cascade. Results: By electron microscopy, apoptotic morphologic changes were detectable after CSBE administration. In this study, it was also demonstrated that CSBE induced apoptosis in SGC-7901 cells by inhibiting mPTP open, mitochondrial cytochrome c release, caspase-9 and caspase-3 activation. Conclusions: The findings indicated that CSBE induces aap optosis through mitochondrial pathway.

Pseudolaric acid B is a major compound found in the bark of Pseudolarix kaempferi Gordon. In our study, pseudolaric acid B inhibited growth of human melanoma cells, A375-S2 in a time and dose-dependent manner. A375-S2 cells treated with pseudolaric acid B showed typical characteristics of apoptosis including morphologic changes, DNA fragmentation, sub-diploid peak in flow cytometry, cleavage of poly-ADP ribose polymerase (PARP) and degradation of inhibitor of caspase-activated DNase (ICAD). P53 protein expression was upregulated while cells were arrested at the $G_2/M$ phase of the cell cycle. There was a decrease in the expression of anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL proteins, whereas pro-apoptotic Bax was increased. The two classical caspase substrates, PARP and ICAD, were both decreased in a time-dependent manner, indicating the activation of downstream caspases.

Primary cutaneous mucinous carcinoma (PCMC) is a rare low-grade malignant neoplasm derived from the eccrine glands. PCMC most commonly arises in the head and neck, with the eyelid being the most common site of origin. This case report describes a 51-year-old male with a painless, pigmented superficial nodular lesion over his right lower eyelid. The lesion was considered to be benign, and the initial treatment was simple excision with a 3-mm margin. However, histologic examination revealed the diagnosis of PCMC, and the patient underwent re-excision of the tumor site with an additional 3-mm margin from the initial scar. Histologic study of this second margin was free of any malignant cells. The patient experienced no postoperative complication or recurrence after 2 years. In our case, the skin lesion had benign morphologic findings and was strongly suspected to be a benign mass. Physicians should be aware of this tumor and be able to differentiate it from benign cystic or solid eyelid lesions.
The Sam Mool Injin extract is occasionally used as a kind of remedies for the treatment of hepatic discomfort in herb medicine. The study for the effect on the hepatic parenchymal cells, especially regenerating activity and even its toxicity have. little been done and only a very few pharmacological properties have been reported. So, an experimental study for the morphologic changes in the acute carbon tetrachloride poisoning of wister rat by administration of its extract has been performed. Male Wister rat weighing around 200gm were used in this experiment. Results were as follows; 1) In the $Ccl_4$ 0.3c.c 7day group, there is noted considerable increase of regenerating activity in the experimental group compared with non-extract treated group, in half of them. 2) Remaining all of the experimental group do not show significant difference of regenerating activity compared with control group. 3) In the group treated with Sam Mool Injin extract alone, there was noted some considerable increase of nonspecific leukocytic infiltrations compared with saline control group. This can be considered as a possibility of hepatic tissue reaction on the Sam Mool Injin extract.
This study was investigated to evaluate the morphologic characteristics of deepbite tendency as multiple factors. The subjects consisted of 60 control subjects(male 25, female 35) and 137 deephite patients(68 male, 69 female). The deepbite group was composed of 4 subgroups(Class I 44, Class II div. 1 40, Class II div. 2 13, Class III 40). The mean age was 21.57 year for the control group 21 year for deepbite group lateral cephalograph in centric occlusion were taken, traced, and digitized for each subject. The statistically computerized analysis was carried out with SAS program. The results were as follows ; 1. In deepbite group, saddle angle is lesser than that of normal group. 2. The vertical dysplasia is prominent on anterior lower face and is closely related with mandibular form and inclination. 3. Without consideration of sagittal relationship, the dental factors such as curve of Spee, interincisal angle, U1 to upper lip length were prominent in the deepbite group. 4. Although there were individual variances in the perioral soft tissue profile, the lip presented more protruded pattern. 5. There was no significant difference in hyoid bone position and inclination between normal and deepbite group. 6. The multivariate discriminant analysis between normal and Class I deepbite group showed that curve of Spee, AB-MP angle, interincisal angle, articular agnle were critical in the determination of deepbite as multiple factors.
The purpose of this study was designed to evaluate the existence of the junctional epithelia on the tooth surface in periodontal pocket, and what were the morphologic differences between the junctional epithelia on the healthy and advanced periodontitis tooth. Fifteen premolar teeth from patients of Yon Sei University, Dental Infirmary were selected for this study. After extration, the teeth were prepared and examined in Scanning electro microscope. The results were as follows. 1. The junctional epithelia from healthy tooth surface were irreguraly round, oval, polygonal and slightly elongated while those from periodontal pocket were so elongated that difficult to distinguished the individual cell boundary. 2. There were a lot of round space so called 'HOLE or WHORL' which seemed tunnel in periodontal pocket with advanced periodontitis. 3. Microvilli were going to destructed and disappeared on surfaces of junctional epithelia in periodontal pocket with advanced periodontitis. 4. There were a lot of Filopodia on Junctional epithelia from healthy surfaces. %. Junctional epithelia from periodontal pocket with advanced periodontitis contained more inflammatory cells than healthy junctional epithelia did.
