Alum contained dominantly the monomeric aluminum species, and PAC contained the polymeric aluminum species. Both Alum and PAC has been improved removal of TP with increasing coagulant dose. Coagulant used directly influenced the microbial activity. Impact on microbial activity, the PAC was smaller than Alum. And impact on microbial activity and population according to the return sludge appeared to be minor.
For the sustained release formulation of recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH), dissociable rhGH aggregates were microencapsulated within poly(D,L-lactic-co-glycolic acid) [PLGA] microparticles. rhGH aggregates with 2 - 3 m Particle diameter were first produced by adding a small volume of aqueous rhGH solution into a partially water miscible organic solvent phase(ethyl acetate) containing PLGA. These rhGH aggregates were then microencapsulated within PLGA polymer phase by extracting ethyl acetate into an aqueous phase pre-saturated with ethyl acetate. The resultant microparticles were 2 - 3 m in diameter similar to the size of rhGH aggregates, suggesting that PLGA polymer was coated around the protein aggregates. Release profiles of rhGH from these microparticles were greatly affected by changing the volume of the incubation medium. The release rhGH species consisted of mostly monomeric form with having a correct conformation. This study reveals that sustained rhGH release could be achieved by microencapsulating reversibly dissociable protein aggregates within biodegradable polymers.
Mechanism of rapid mixing effect on chemical phosphorus removal is evaluated in this study. Assuming that chemical phosphorus removal is unaffected by mixing time, only rapid mixing intensity is evaluated. In order to find out the mechanism, it is hypothesized that rapid mixing affects the Al hydrolysis speciation, and that formation of more monomeric species ($Al^a$) results in better removal of phosphorus. According to a ferron assay, more $Al^a$ formed at higher mixing intensity than at lower intensity. Subsequent experiments revealed that better phosphorus removal was obtained at higher intensity than at lower intensity, in terms of the molar ratio of $Al_{added}/P_{removed}$. The proposed hypothesis was proved in this study. Chemical phosphorus removal is affected by rapid mixing intensity due to its effect on the Al hydrolysis speciation.
High internal phase emulsions are highly concentrated emulsion systems consisting of a large volume of dispersed phase above 0.74. The rheological properties of high internal phase water-in-oil emulsions were measured conducting steady shear, oscillatory shear and creep/recovery experiments. It was found that the yield stress is inversely proportional to the drop size with the exponent of values between 1 and 2. Since the oil phase contains monomeric species, microcellular foams can easily be prepared from high internal phase emulsions. In this study, the microcellular foams combining a couple of thickeners into the conventional formulation of styrene and water system were investigated to understand the effect of viscosity ratio on cell size. Cell size variation on thickener concentration could be explained by a dimensional analysis between the capillary number and the viscosity ratio. Compression properties of foam are important end use properties in many practical applications. Crush strength and Young's modulus of microcellular foams polymerized from high internal phase emulsions were measured and compared from compression tests. Of the foams tested in this study, the foam prepared from the organoclay having reactive group as an oil phase thickener showed outstanding compression properties.

A suproxide dismutase gene of Aquifex pyroprolus, a novel marine hypenhermophilic bacterium, was cloned, expressed, and characterized. The SOD of A pyrophilus (ApSOD) is an iron-containing homo-oligomeric protein with a monomeric molecular weight of 24.2 kDa. the amino acid sequence is similar to those of known Mn- and Fe-SODs from thermophilic archaea, and metal binding residues in all SOD sequences from different species are also conserved in A. pyrophilus SOD. The selective catalytic experiments using both sulfated/sulfur-free titania and V2O5/TiO2 catalysts have been conducted for NO reduction by NH3 in a packed-bed, down-flow reactor. The sulfated and vanadia loaded titania exhibited higher activity for NO removal than the sulfur-free catalysts, where > 90% NO removal was achieved over the sulfated V2O5/TiO2 catalyst between 280∼500 C. The surface structure of vanadia species on the catalyst surface played a critical role in the high performance of catalysts in which the existence of monomeric/polymeric vanadate is revealed by Raman spectra studies. Water vapor and SO2 were added to the reacting system for the catalyst deactivation tests. At higher temperatures (T ≥ 350 C), little deactivation was observed over the sulfated V2O5/TiO2 catalysts, showing good durability against SO2 and water vapor, which is compared with deactivation at lower temperatures.
This research explored the feasibility of preparing and utilizing a prefonned polymeric solution of Al(III) for coagulation in water treatment. Slow base(NaOH) injection into supersaturated aluminum chloride and aluminum sulfate solutions did produce high yields of Al polymers useful to water treatment applications. The method of characterization analysis was based on timed spectrophotometer with ferron as a color developing reagent. The hydrolytic Al species were divided into $monomeric(Al_a),\;polymeric(Al_b),\;and\;precipitate(Al_c)$ from the difference in reaction kinetics. The analysis of PACl's characteristics showed that the quantity of polymeric Al produced at value of$ r(OH_{added}/AI)=2.2$ was $83\%$ of the total aluminum in solution, as showing maximum contents and precipitated Al was dramatically increased when r was increased above 2.35. In addition, the characteristics of polyaluminum sulfate (PAS) showed that polymeric Al contained at r = 0.75 was $18\%$ of the total aluminum in solution. The synthesized PACI and PAS were stable during storing period, as indicating negligible aging effect. The effect of sulfate ion on PACI was dependent on the concentration of sulfate ion. That is, polymeric species decrease and precipitate species increase as sulfate ion concentration increased. It can be concluded that the sulfate cause the formation of $Al(OH)_{3(S)}$ at low pH. However, The effect of calcium ion was negligible for distribution of Al species.

The experimental results of the characteristics of aluminum based and ferric based coagulants for the Nakdong River water showed that the main hydrolysis species contained in alum and $FeCl_3$ are monomeric species of 98% and 93.3%, respectively. The PACl of r=1.2 produced by the addition of base contained 31.2% of polymeric Al species and the PACl of r=2.2 contained 85.0% of polymeric Al species, as showing more polymeric Al species with increasing r value. Coagulation tests using Al(III) and Fe(III) salts coagulants for the Nakdong River water showed that the coagulation effectiveness of turbidity and organic matter was high in the order of $FeCl_3$ > PACl (r=2.2) > PACl (r=1.2) > alum. $FeCl_3$ has showed better flocculation efficiency than Al(III) salts coagulants. In addition, in case of Al(III) coagulants, the Al(III) coagulants of higher basicity, which contained more polymeric Al species, resulted in better coagulation efficiency for both turbidity and organic matter removed. The optimum pH range for all of the coagulants investigated was around pH 7.0 under the experimental pH range of 4.0~9.5. Especially, the highest basicity PACl (r=2.2) and $FeCl_3$ were considered as more appropriate coagulants for the removal of turbidity in the case of raw water exhibiting higher pH.
Amyloidogenesis defines a condition in which a soluble and innocuous protein turns to insoluble protein aggregates known as amyloid fibrils. This protein suprastructure derived via chemically specific molecular self-assembly process has been commonly observed in various neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Prion diseases. Although the major culprit for the cellular degeneration in the diseases remains unsettled, amyloidogenesis is considered to be etiologically involved. Recent recognition of fibrillar polymorphism observed mostly from in vitro amyloidogeneses may indicate that multiple mechanisms for the amyloid fibril formation would be operated. Nucleation-dependent fibrillation is the prevalent model for assessing the self-assembly process. Following thermodynamically unfavorable seed formation, monomeric polypeptides bind to the seeds by exerting structural adjustments to the template, which leads to accelerated amyloid fibril formation. In this review, we propose another in vitro model of amyloidogenesis named double-concerted fibrillation. Here, two consecutive assembly processes of monomers and subsequent oligomeric species are responsible for the amyloid fibril formation of $\alpha$-synuclein, a pathological component of Parkinson's disease, following structural rearrangement within the oligomers which then act as a growing unit for the fibrillation.
Under pseudo-first order conditions, the monomeric species of Cr(VI) was found to be kinetically active in the absence of phenanthroline (phen) whereas in the phen-promoted path, the Cr(VI)-phen complex undergoes a nucleophilic attack by etane-1,2-diol to form a ternary complex which subsequently experience a redox decomposition leading to hydroxy ethanal and Cr(III)-phen complex. The effect of the cationic surfactant (CPC), anionic surfactant (SDS) and neutral surfactant (TX-100) on the unpromoted and phen-promoted path have been studied. Micellar effects have been explained by considering the preferential partitioning of reactants between the micellar and aqueous phase. Combination of TX-100 and phenanthroline will be the ideal for chromic acid oxidation of ethane-1,2-diol in aqueous media.
