  • Solvent extraction of alkali metal and alkaline earth metal cations by mono-crown ether(benzo-15-crown-5) and bis-(crown ether)s(ethylenediamine bis(4'-formyl benzo-15-crown-5)) containing benzo-15-crown-5 moieties were investigated with water-chloroform system at $25^{\circ}C$. The order of the extraction equilibrium constants($K_e$) and the complexation constants($K_c$) for the alkali metal and alkaline earth metal cations with mono-crown ether and bis-(crown ether)s were Ca(II)>Na(I)>Sr(II)>K(I)>Mg(II)>Rb(I) and Sr(II)>Ca(II)>K(I)>Rb(I)>Mg(II)>Na(I) respectively. These results were explained in terms of the size effect of metal cation and electron density effect. Also, the bis-(crown ether)s was found to extract metal cations more effectively than the corresponding mono-crown ether.

  • BACKGROUND: Heavy metal adsorptionnot only depends on biochar characteristics but also on the nature of the metals involved and on their competitive behavior for biochar adsorption sites. The goal of this study was to investigate the competitive absorption characteristics of Cu and Cd in mono-metal and binary-metal forms by biochar derived from Phragmites communis. METHODS AND RESULTS: Batch and column experiments were conducted to evaluate the competitive adsorption characteristics of the biocharfor Cu and Cd. In the batch experiments, the maximum adsorption capacity of Cd(63 mg/g) by biochar was higher than that for Cu (55 mg/g) in the mono-metal adsorption isotherm. On the other hand, the maximum Cu adsorption capacity (40 mg/g) by biochar was higher than that for Cd(25 mg/g) in the binary-metal adsorption isotherm. Cu was the most retained cations. Cd could be easily exchanged and substituted by Cu. The amounts of adsorbed metals in the column experiments were in the order of Cd (121 mg/g) > Cu (96 mg/g) in mono-metal conditions, and Cu (72 mg/g) > Cd (29 mg/g) in binary-metal conditions. CONCLUSION: Overall, the results demonstrated that competitive adsorption among metals increased the mobility of these metals. Particularly, Cd in binary-metal conditions lost its adsorption capacity most significantly.

  • This study was designed for comparison of shear bond strengths and failure patterns of four experimental groups which combinated mesh-backed metal brackets and texture based ceramic brackets (Transcend series $2000^{(TM)}$) with chemically cured resin (Mono $Lok2^{(TM)}$) and visible light cured resin $(Transbond^{(TM)})$. Brackets were bonded on the extracted human bicuspids, after etching them by manufacturer's recommand, and the shear bond strengths were measured on the Instron machine after 24 hrs passed in the $37^{\circ}C$ water bath. The results were as follows. 1. Ceramic brackets, transcend series $2000^{(TM)}$, bonded with $MonoLok2^{(TM)}$ showed statistically higher shear bond strength than mesh-backed metal brackets bonded with $MonoLok2^{(TM)}$. 2. There was no significant difference in shear bond strengths between metal and ceramic brackets bonded with $(Transbond^{(TM)})$. 3. Ceramic brackets bonded with both $(Transbond^{(TM)})$) and $MonoLok2^{(TM)}$ showed primarily fractures between brackets adhesive interface. 4. Enamel crack was not found in anyone specimen.

  • A graphene layer is most important materials in resent year to enhance the electrical properties of semiconductor device due to high mobility, flexibility, strong mechanical resistance and transparency[1,2]. The resistance switching memory with the graphene layer have been reported for next generation nonvolatile memory device[3,4]. Also, the graphene layer is able to improve the electrical properties of memory device because of the high mobility and current density. In this study, the resistance switching memory device with metal-oxide nano-particles embedded in polyimide layer on the graphene mono-layer were fabricated. At first, the graphene layer was deposited $SiO_2$/Si substrate by using chemical vapor deposition. Then, a biphenyl-tetracarboxylic dianhydride-phenylene diamine poly-amic-acid was spin coated on the deposited metal layer on the graphene mono-layer. Then the samples were cured at $400^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour in $N_2$ atmosphere after drying at $135^{\circ}C$ for 30 min through rapid thermal annealing. The deposition of aluminum layer with thickness of 200 nm was done by a thermal evaporator. The electrical properties of device were measured at room temperature using an HP4156a precision semiconductor parameter analyzer and an Agilent 81101A pulse generator. We will discuss the switching mechanism of memory device with metal-oxide nano-particles on the graphene mono-layer.

  • Mono-crystalline silicon solar cell is fabricated by using alkali metals. These alkali metal, used in wet etching process, must be removed for the high efficiency solar cell. As wet etching process has been adapted due to its low cost. But lots of alkali metals like potassium remains on the silicon surface and acts as impurities. To remove these alkali metals many of cleaning process have to be applied when solar cell manufacturing process. In terms of alkali metal removal, modified etchant solution is required for concise cleaning process. In this paper ethylenediamine was used and proposed for the substituion of postassium hydroxide.

  • The molecular structures of thiacalix[4]biscrown-5 (1) and p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]biscrown-5 (2) and their alkali-metal-ion complexes were optimized using the DFT BLYP/6-31G(d) and mPW1PW91/6-31G(d,p) (hybrid HF-DF) calculations. The total electronic energies, the normal vibrational modes, and the Gibbs free energies of the mono- and di-topic complexes of each host with the sodium and potassium ions were analyzed. The $K^+$-complexes exhibited relatively stronger binding efficiencies than $Na^+$-complexes for both the monoand di-topic complexes of 1 and 2 comparing the efficiencies of the sodium and potassium complexes with an anisole and phenol. The mPW1PW91/6-31G(d,p) calculated distances between the oxygen atoms and the alkali metal ions were reported in the alkali-metal-ion complexes ($1{\cdot}Na^+$, $1{\cdot}2Na^+$, $1{\cdot}K^+$, $1{\cdot}2K^+$, $2{\cdot}Na^+$, $2{\cdot}Na^+$, $2{\cdot}K^+$, $2{\cdot}2K^+$). The BLYP/6-31G(d) calculated IR spectra of the host 1 and its mono-topic alkali-metal-ion complexes are compared.

  • Light-cured orthodontic composite resin has been widely advertised recently for use in bonding brackets. However, the curability of light-cured resin when light waves are diffused through metal brackets in questionable. The purposes of this study were to evaluate shear bond strength and failure patterns of visible light-cured resin(Lightbond) and chemically cured-resin(Mono-Lok 2), and to determine the relative value of light-cured resin as an alternative to conventional chemically cured resin. Each of the two resins was tested on twenty extracted human first premolars. Standard edgewise metal brackets were bonded to the teeth in accordance with the manufacturers' recommendation. After bonding, the teeth were stored for 24 hours at $37^{\circ}C$, 100% humidity. The shear bond strength was tested with a universal testing machine(Instron 4302), at 0.5mm/min crosshead speed. After debonding, brackets and enamel surfaces were examined with a scanning electron microscope and a stereoscopic microscope. The results were as follows : 1. Metal brackets bonded with Lightbond showed statistically higher shear bond strength than metal brackets bonded with Mono-Lok2. 2. The predominant failure site in Lightbond was the enamel-resin interface, and in Mono-Lok 2 it was the resin itself. 3. Enamel cracks were not found in any specimen. The above results suggest that direct bonding of metal brackets to enamel with light-cured resin bonding agent can be used effectively in clinics.

  • The mono-layer cover system is composed of soils only as a filling material and various plants are planted on the surface to control the water balance in the cover system. In this paper, the mono-layer cover system was considered as an alternative landfill final cover system and developed a model that could utilize industrial by-product (especially, coal ash & phosphogypsum) as additive filling materials. The mixture of granite soil, coal ash, and phosphogypsum was placed as a cover material in a box constructed with cement. Laboratory tests were carried out to investigate the environmental effect on the utilization of coal ash & phosphogypsum and to determine the mxing ratio of each materials. In the leaching test, all materials showed lower heavy metal concentration than the threshold values of regulation. The optimum mixing ratio of materials which was applied to field model test was determined to soil (4) : coal ash (1) : phosphogypsum (1) on the volume base. Field model tests were continued from February to July, 2004 in the soil box that was constructed with cement block. It was verified that coal ash and phospogypsum mixed with soil was to be safe environmentally and the water balance of mono-layer cover system was reasonable.

  • We have studied magnetic structure and magnetic anisotropy energy of cubic transition metal mono-oxide cluster FeO and MnO using OpenMX method based on density functional method. The calculation results show that the antiferromagnetic spin arrangement has the lowest energy for FeO and MnO due to the superexchange interactions. The magnetic anisotropy is only found for antiferromagnetically ordered FeO cluster, since occupied electron of 3d down-spin level induces the spin-orbit couplings with <111> directed angular momentum.

  • Metal Mono Chalcogenides(MMC)는 각각의 III족 metal 원자당한개의 chalchogen 원자를 갖고 있는(MX, M=Ga and In, X=S, Se, and Te)층상구조 화합물이다.
