  • In this paper a computation of turbulent natural convection in enclosures with the elliptic-blending based differential and algebraic flux models is presented. The primary emphasis of the study is placed on an investigation of accuracy of the treatment of turbulent heat fluxes with the elliptic-blending second-moment closure for the turbulent natural convection flows. The turbulent heat fluxes in this study are treated by the elliptic-blending based algebraic and differential flux models. The previous turbulence model constants are adjusted to produce accurate solutions. The proposed models are applied to the prediction of turbulent natural convections in a 1:5 rectangular cavity and in a square cavity with conducting top and bottom walls, which are commonly used for validation of the turbulence models. The relative performance between the algebraic and differential flux model is examined through comparing with experimental data. It is shown that both the elliptic-blending based models predict well the mean velocity and temperature, thereby the wall shear stress and Nusselt number. It is also shown that the elliptic-blending based algebraic flux model produces solutions which are as accurate as those by the differential flux model.

  • A computer based iterative numerical procedure has been developed to analyse reinforced high strength concrete columns subjected to horizontal wave loads and eccentric vertical load by taking the material, geometrical and wave load non-linearity into account. The behaviour of the column has been assumed, to be represented by Moment-Thrust-Curvature relationship of the column cross-section. The formulated computer program predicts horizontal load versus deflection behaviour of a column up to failure. The developed numerical model has been applied to analyse several column specimens of various slenderness, structural properties and axial load ratios, tested by other researchers. The predicted values are having a better agreement with experimental results. A simplified user friendly hydrodynamic load model has been developed based on Morison equation supplemented with a wave slap term to predict the high frequency non-linear impulsive hydrodynamic loads arising from steep waves, known as ringing loads. A computer program has been formulated based on the model to obtain the wave loads and non-dimensional wave load coefficients for all discretised nodes, along the length of column from instantaneous free water surface to bottom of the column at mud level. The columns of same size and material properties but having different slenderness ratio are analysed by the developed numerical procedure for the simulated wave loads under various vertical thrust. This paper discusses the results obtained in detail and effect of slenderness in resisting wave loads under various vertical thrust.

  • In this paper the progressive collapse potential of building structures designed for real construction projects were evaluated based on arbitrary column removal scenario using various alternate path methods specified in the GSA guidelines. The analysis model structures are a 22-story reinforced concrete moment frames with core wall building and a 44-story interior concrete core and exterior steel diagrid structure. The progressive collapse resisting capacities of the model structures were evaluated using the linear static, nonlinear static, and nonlinear dynamic analyses. The linear static analysis results showed that progressive collapse occurred in the 22-story model structure when an interior column was removed. However the structure turned out to be safe according to the nonlinear static and dynamic analyses. Similar results were observed in the 44-story diagrid structure. Based on the analysis results, it was concluded that, compared with nonlinear analysis procedures, the linear static method is conservative in the prediction of progressive collapse resisting capacity of building structure based on arbitrary column removal scenario.

  • Predictive demand and collapse fragility functions are two essential components of the probabilistic seismic demand analysis that are commonly developed based on statistics with enormous, costly and time consuming data gathering. Although this approach might be justified for research purposes, it is not appealing for practical applications because of its computational cost. Thus, in this paper, Bayesian regression-based demand and collapse models are proposed to eliminate the need of time-consuming analyses. The demand model developed in the form of linear equation predicts overall maximum inter-story drift of the lowto mid-rise regular steel moment resisting frames (SMRFs), while the collapse model mathematically expressed by lognormal cumulative distribution function provides collapse occurrence probability for a given spectral acceleration at the fundamental period of the structure. Next, as an application, the proposed demand and collapse functions are implemented in a seismic fragility analysis to develop fragility and consequently seismic demand curves of three example buildings. The accuracy provided by utilization of the proposed models, with considering computation reduction, are compared with those directly obtained from Incremental Dynamic analysis, which is a computer-intensive procedure.

  • Mammals such as dogs and cheetahs change their gait from trot to gallop as they run faster. However, lizards always trot for various speeds of running. When mammals run slowly with trot gait, their fore leg and hind leg generate the required force for acceleration or deceleration such that the yaw moments created by these forces cancel each other. On the other hand, when lizards run slowly, their fore legs and hind legs generate the forces for deceleration and acceleration, respectively. In this paper, the yaw motion of a lizard model is controlled by the movement of their waist and tail, and the reaction moment from the ground produced by the hind legs in simulation. The simulation uses the whole body dynamics of a lizard model, which consists of 4 links based on the Callisaurus draconoides. The results show that the simulated trotting of the model is similar to that of a real lizard when the movement of the model is optimized to minimize the reaction moment from the ground. It means that the body of a lizard moves in such a way that the reaction moment from the ground is minimized. This demonstrates our hypothesis on how lizards trot using body motion.

  • The present study suggests a procedure of establishing a ship dynamics modeling by regression of free-running model test results. The hydrodynamic force and moment of the whole model ship is derived from the low-pass filtered acceleration in the turning circle and zigzag maneuver tests. Force and moment of the propeller and rudder are separated from that of the whole ship to acquire the hull force and moment terms, based on the principles of the component model. The low-pass filter frequency is verified in prior to dynamics modeling, to find the threshold frequency of 2.5 Hz. The dynamics modeling of the hull is compared with the component modeling by captive model tests. Because of strong correlation between sway velocity, yaw angular velocity, and heel angle, each maneuvering coefficient is not able to be validated, but the whole modeling shows good agreement with the captive model tests.

  • Lumped damage mechanics (LDM) is a recent nonlinear theory with several applications to civil engineering structures, such as reinforced concrete and steel buildings. LDM apply key concepts of classic fracture and damage mechanics on plastic hinges. Therefore, the lumped damage models are quite successful in reproduce actual structural behaviour using concepts well-known by engineers in practice, such as ultimate moment and first cracking moment of reinforced concrete elements. So far, lumped damage models are based in the strain energy equivalence hypothesis, which is one of the fictitious states where the intact material behaviour depends on a damage variable. However, there are other possibilities, such as the energy equivalence hypothesis. Such possibilities should be explored, in order to pursue unique advantages as well as extend the LDM framework. Therewith, a lumped damage model based on the energy equivalence hypothesis is proposed in this paper. The proposed model was idealised for reinforced concrete structures, where a damage variable accounts for concrete cracking and the plastic rotation represents reinforcement yielding. The obtained results show that the proposed model is quite accurate compared to experimental responses.

  • In this study, alternative seismic force-resisting systems for plant structure supporting equipment were designed, and the seismic performance thereof was compared using nonlinear dynamic analysis. One alternative seismic force-resisting system was designed per the requirement for ordinary moment-resisting and concentrically braced frames but with a reduced base shear. The other seismic force-resisting system was designed by accommodating seismic details of intermediate and unique moment-resisting frames and special concentrically braced frames. Different plastic hinge models were applied to ordinary and ductile systems based on the validation using existing test results. The control model obtained by code-based flexible design and/or reduction of base shear did not satisfy the seismic performance objectives, but the alternative structural system did by strengthened panel zones and a reduced effective buckling length. The seismic force to equipment calculated from the nonlinear dynamic analysis was significantly lower than the equivalent static force of KDS 41 17 00. The comparison of design alternatives showed that the seismic performance required for a plant structure could be secured economically by using performance-based design and alternative seismic-force resisting systems adopting minimally modified seismic details.
