Molecular Signalling Mechanisms Involved in the Development of Fertilizing Capacity by Mammalian Spermatozoa

  • Four important attributes for successful fertilization by a spermatozoon are (ⅰ) correct morphology, (ⅱ) correct presentation of egg recognition and fusion molecules, (ⅲ) progressive motility and (ⅳ), correct transfer of signalling molecules from sperm to egg for activation of development. In this presentation, these topics will be described and illustrated with emphasis on the endogenous control mechanisms that enable spermatozoa to respond to external signals. (omitted)

  • Field of enantioseparations represents one of the actual topics of chemistry. Significant, in some cases dramatic differences in a desired activity as well as in toxic properties of enantiomers of chiral drugs, food additives, agrochemicals, cosmetic products, etc. represents a driving force in this field. The enantiomers of all chiral bioactive compounds have to be isolated and to be tested. Besides the ethical or environmental reasons for developing single enantiomers, it may be a real therapeutic benefit and in some cases, it has been used as a strategy for extending patent life.   • $\alpha$-Glucosidase contributing $\alpha$-glucan metabolism in microorganisms is characterized by the variety in substrate recognition. Recent studies on microbial enzymes show that $\alpha$-glucosidases are divided into two groups, family I and family n, in which family I enzymes have four conserved catalytic-regions of $\alpha$-amylase family. The presentation focusing on the difference of the $\alpha$-glucosidase families reviews i) the catalytic amino-acid residues of nucleophile and acid/base catalyst, and ii) the molecular evolution of two families.

  • Specific molecular recognition of cyclodextrin and aspirin was determined. A stable 1:1 inclusion complex was established in solution. The distinct structure of inclusion complex was elucidated by FT-IR, FAB-MS, UV, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR spectroscopy. Based on the 1H NMR data, a time-averaged conformation of $\alpha$-cyclodextrin exhibited significant catalytic activity toward the hydrolysis of aspirin in alkaline solution.

A New Record of the Genus Camarops (Boliniaceae) in Korea

  • Camarops ustulinoides (Henn.) Nannf., belonging to the family Boliniaceae (Order Boliniales), is reported as new to Korea. The morphological characteristics and molecular phylogenetic analysis based on the nucLSU region sequence confirm the recognition of this taxon. Illustrated descriptions of C. ustulinoides are provided.

  • Calmodulin: very large conformation change of helix uncoiling, hinge-bending and domain rotation. Calmodulin (CaM) is the principal Ca$\^$2+/ -dependent regulator of a variety of important eukaryotic cellular processes. In many of these processes, calmodulin activates a plethora of target enzymes, and the calmodulin-binding domains in several targets have been shown to residue in a region of about 18-residue peptide segment.(omitted)

One Unrecorded Endophytic Fungi from Sub-alpine Conifer, Rhizosphaera pini

  • An endophytic fungus, Rhizosphaera pini strain NIE7426, was isolated from the sub-alpine coniferous tree Abies nephrolepis in Mt. Nochu of Gangwon Province. It was characterized by macroscopic and microscopic features, as well as the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) 1, 2 and 5.8S sequences. All morphological and molecular features support the first recognition of this taxon in Korea. In addition, this study adds A. nephrolepis as a host plant R. pini.
