A thermoresponsive polymer, poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA), was successfully synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Different amounts of 1,3-propanesultone were used as quaternization agent to transit the PDMAEMA into partially modified poly(zwitterions), resulting in p[DMAEMA-co-3-dimethyl(methacryloyloxyethyl)ammonium propanesulfonate] (PDMAEMA-co-PDMAPS). Molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, and degree of quarternization were determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The transmission spectra of the 1.0 wt % aqueous solutions of the resulting polymers at 650 nm were measured as a function of temperature. Results showed that the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) and the upper critical solution temperature (UCST) could be easily controlled by the different composition of dimethylamino and zwitterion groups. The effect of partial quaternization on thermoresponsive properties was also studied by dynamic light scattering (DLS) with the same aqueous concentration (1.0 wt %) as employed for turbidimetry studies. The LCST and UCST values measured by DLS correlated well with those determined by turbidimetry.

Molecular dynamic simulations were performed to examine the wetting behavior of a graphite surface textured with nanoscale pillars. The contact angle of a water droplet on parallelepiped or dome-shaped pillars was investigated by systematically varying the height and width of the pillar and the spacing between pillars. An optimal inter-pillar spacing that gives the highest contact angle was found. The droplet on the dome-covered surface was determined to be more mobile than that on the surface covered with parallelepiped pillars.
Autophagy is an intracellular degradation system that breaks down damaged organelles or damaged proteins using intracellular lysosomes. Recent studies have also revealed that various forms of selective autophagy play specific physiological roles under different cellular conditions. Lipid droplets, which are mainly found in adipocytes and hepatocytes, are dynamic organelles that store triglycerides and are critical to health. Lipophagy is a type of selective autophagy that targets lipid droplets and is an essential mechanism for maintaining homeostasis of lipid droplets. However, while processes that regulate lipid droplets such as lipolysis and lipogenesis are relatively well known, the major factors that control lipophagy remain largely unknown. This review introduces the underlying mechanism by which lipophagy is induced and regulated, and the current findings on the major roles of lipophagy in physiological and pathological status. These studies will provide basic insights into the function of lipophagy and may be useful for the development of new therapies for lipophagy dysfunction-related diseases.
Quantitative analysis of dynamic brain PET data using a tracer kinetic modeling has played important roles in the investigation of functional and molecular basis of various brain diseases. Parametric imaging of the kinetic parameters (voxel-wise representation of the estimated parameters) has several advantages over the conventional approaches using region of interest (ROI). Therefore, several strategies have been suggested to generate the parametric images with a minimal bias and variability in the parameter estimation. In this paper, we will review the several approaches for parametric imaging with linearized methods which include graphical analysis and mulilinear regression analysis.

This paper shows a gigahertz actuator based on multi-wall carbon nanotubes(CNT) encapsulating metallic ions using classical molecular dynamics simulations. Encapsulated potassium ions accelerated by an applying external electric field could initialize a gigahertz actuator composed of a $7K^{+}(a)CNT$ oscillator.
We present results of molecular dynamic (MD) simulations for the segmental motion of liquid n-butane as the base case for a consistent study for conformational transition from one rotational isomeric state to another in long chains of liquid n-alkanes. The behavior of the hazard plots for n-butane obtained from our MD simulations are compared with that for n-butane of Brownian dynamics study. The MD results for the conformational transition of n-butane by a Poisson process form the total first passage times are different from those from the separate t-g and g-t first passage times. This poor agreement is probably due to the failure of the detailed balance between the fractions of trans and gauche. The enhancement of the transitions t-g and g-t at short time regions are also discussed.
We present results of molecular dynamic (MD) simulations for the segmental motion of liquid n-heptadecane in order to investigate conformational transitions from one rotational isomeric state to another. The behavior of the hazard plots for n-heptadecane obtained from our MD simulations are compared with that for polymer of Brownian dynamics (BD) study. The transition rate at the ending dihedrals of the n-heptadecane chain is much higher than that at the central dihedrals. In the study of correlation between transitions of neighboring dihedrals, the large value of c2 implies that some 30% of the transitions of the second neighbors can be regarded as following transitions two bonds away in a correlated fashion. Finally the analysis of multiple transitions and the number of times occurred in the initial 0.005 ns are discussed.
Nanowires (NWs) have attracted intensive researches owing to the broad applications that arise from their remarkable properties. Over the last decade, immense numerical studies have been conducted for the numerical investigation of mechanical properties of NWs. Among these numerical simulations, the molecular dynamics (MD) plays a key role. Herein we present a brief review on the current state of the MD investigation of nanowires. Emphasis will be placed on the FCC metal NWs, especially the Cu NWs. MD investigations of perfect NWs' mechanical properties under different deformation conditions including tension, compression, torsion and bending are firstly revisited. Following in succession, the studies for defected NWs including the defects of twin boundaries (TBs) and pre-existing defects are discussed. The different deformation mechanism incurred by the presentation of defects is explored and discussed. This review reveals that the numerical simulation is an important tool to investigate the properties of NWs. However, the substantial gaps between the experimental measurements and MD results suggest the urgent need of multi-scale simulation technique.
Calculating size-dependent mechanical properties of the nano-scale materials usually involves cumbersome numerical and theoretical works. In this paper, we aim to present a closed-form relation to calculate the length-dependent Young's modulus of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) based on nonlocal elasticity theory. In this regard, a single wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) is considered as a rod structure and the governing nonlocal equations are developed under uniaxial tensile load. The equations are solved using analytical methods and strain distribution, total displacement and the size-dependent equivalent Young's modulus are obtained. Further, the results are compared with the molecular dynamics results from the literature. The outcome indicates that the calculated relations are coincident with the molecular dynamics results.
