It is inevitable to use chemical germicidal agents like paraben, imidazolidinyl urea and phenoxyethanol to preserve the emulsions which is usually used in cosmetics. Although these chemical preservatives are good enough to reduce the microbiological contamination, they are irritative, allergenic to the skin. Several kinds of polyols are used in cosmetics as moisturizer and solvent. In this study, we evaluate the effects of polyols on anti-microbial activities, safety and resistant index. MIC(minimal inhibitory concentration) of polyols determined against 6 germs including Staphylococcus aureus. The order of MIC was PG $\cong$ DPG $\cong$ 1,3BG > HG > 1,2-PD > 1,2-HD $\cong$ 1,2-OD. The $2{\sim}3\;wt%$ of 1,2-HD(hexanediol) shows good anti-microbial effects in emulsions without allergenic response. Resistant index of 1,2-HD was less than 2 and this value was smaller than that of chemical preservatives. The mechanism of antimicrobilogical effect might be disturb the membrane of germs by investigating using electron microscope. Added to that, using this paradigm, low preservative contents, paraben-free system, and even preservative-free systems can be expected from these results.
In order to develop a topical preparation which has a high occlusive property with skin moisturization, nano-structured lipid carrier (NLC) systems along with solid lipid nanoparticle (SLN) were designed. Various NLC dispersions were successfully formulated with Compritol 888 ATO as a solid lipid, Labrafil M 1944 CS as an oil, and Tween 80 as a surfactant. The increase of oil content (5 to 50%) led to the decrease in the occlusion factor in the order of SLN > NLC-5 > NLC-15 = NLC-30 > NLC-50. Particle size of lipid particulates was in the range of 100 to 160 nm. NLC-based carbogels were prepared by the employment of humectants such as urea, glycerin, and Tinocare GL to carbomer gel. NLC-30 gel formulations containing 4 or 8 % of lipid particles showed improved occlusive effect in vitro, compared to NLC-free gel base. Even though NLC-free gel base revealed comparable occlusion effect by itself, the occlusion factor of 4 % NLC-30 gel was about 2-fold higher than that of NLC-free gel base.
Previously, we reported that L-PCA enhanced blood circulation by modulating constitutive NO production. It was that L-PCA increased L-Arg uptake into endothelial cell, followed by the enhancement of NO production. Then we recommended the use of L-PCA for cosmetics, not only as humectants but also as enhancer of blood circulation. Since L-Arg is transported into endothelial cells by CAT (cationic amino acid transporter), it is expected that L-PCA also increase the uptake of basic amino acid, L-Lys. In this study, the uptakes of some amino acids into cells were evaluated by using 3H-labelled amino acid. Then we found the tendency that the uptake of L-Lys into endothelial cells was also enhanced by L-PCA. And the evident effect was observed in the epidermal fibroblasts, which had also CAT. Furthermore, it was found that the transportation of the other type of amino acids were not enhanced by L-PCA. That is to say, a famous moisturizer, L-PCA, has some effects on basic amino acid transport into cells.
Recently, the beauty industry has implemented personalized services based on skin big data. To increase competitiveness in the beauty industry, systematic data measurement and evaluation indicators are necessary to select data and obtain necessary knowledge. In response, this study sought to stably enhance the accuracy of skin diagnosis based on satisfaction and reliability. To this end, the research was conducted through focus group interviews (FGI), a case study of brands, and analysis of prior research results. In particular, as a result of analyzing keywords that classify skin types by brand, common survey items for skin types were oiliness and using moisturizer, cosmetic use and vascular of skin, external stimulus and blemish & freckles, facial wrinkle, outside activities, self-consciousness, and smoke. In additioin to the common questions of the preceding study and the brand survey items, the questions concerning complex skin types, seasonal change, facial color, wrinkles and elasticity were added, and the questions were presented in a total of 40 items. In particular, it suggested that skin measurement could be conducted by focusing on elasticity and pigmentation items by reflecting the results of prior research and the opinions of FGI, and based on this, a customized service with high satisfaction and high accuracy of beauty care based on this could be proposed. We hope that this study will facilitate active self-care by providing more satisfying skin stones and personalized cosmetics proposals, thus laying the foundation for the further development of the cosmetics industry.
Objectives: To investigate the characteristics of topical agents including natural products using for atopic dermatitis treatment via a review on the cases and clinical trials. Methods: Through a search on Pubmed, EMBASE, Cochrane library, DBPIA, NDSL, and OASIS, we selected papers that applied natural products externally for atopic dermatitis and analyzed them. Results: Finally, Seventeen papers were selected. As the primary outcome, changes in the SCORAD and EASI, were the most used. The most frequent type of external formulation was cream. In terms of the frequency of use, it was used at least twice a day in all studies. When evaluated based on SCORAD, EASI, SH and TEWL, the improvement effect on atopic dermatitis was highest when the ointment formulation and the moisturizer formulation were used. A few side effects of topical agents including natural products were observed, but most were mild symptoms and no serious side effects occurred. Conclusion: This study is meaningful in that it has drawn a significant trend for studies that have been published in the last 5 years that contain a single intervention for topical agents including natural products, and that it presents the direction and evidence for the application of external therapy to increase the therapeutic effect of atopic dermatitis.
Objective This study aimed to confirm the effect of Sabaek-san extract on the recovery of skin damage in atopic dermatitis-induced mice. Methods In this study, we used 4-week-old NC/Nga mice that were assigned to four groups: control (Ctrl), lipid barrier elimination (LBEG), dexamethasone (Dx) administration after lipid barrier elimination (DxAG), and Sabaek-san extract administration after lipid barrier elimination (SBAG). Ten rats were assigned to each treatment group. After drug administration for 3 days following lipid barrier elimination, ceramide kinase, caspase 14, sodium hydrogen antiporter (NHE), cathelicidin, claudin, and Toll-like receptor (TLR2) were observed to confirm restoration of skin moisturizer production, antimicrobial barriers, and tight junctions in the skin barrier. Results Ceramide kinase and caspase 14 positive reactions were significantly higher in the SBAG group than in the LBEG or DxAG groups. NHE and cathelicidin showed a higher positive reaction in the SBAG group than in the LBEG and DxAG groups. Claudins and TLR2 showed a higher positive reaction in the SBAG group than in the LBEG or DxAG groups. Conclusion It was confirmed that Sabaek-san extract may have the potential to restore damaged skin barrier in atopic dermatitis.
Objective The purpose of this study was to confirm the effects of Galgeunhwanggeumhwangryeon-tang (PSCG) extract on skin moisturizing, antibacterial, and tight junction recovery in atopic dermatitis-induced mice. Methods In this study, we used 4-week-old NC/Nga mice divided into four groups: control (Ctrl), lipid barrier elimination (LBE), dexamethasone (Dx) after lipid barrier elimination (DEX), and PSCG after lipid barrier elimination (PSC). Ten rats were assigned to each treatment group. Three days after drug administration following lipid barrier elimination, ceramide kinase, caspase 14, sodium hydrogen antiporter (NHE), cathelicidin, claudin, and toll-like receptor (TLR)-2 were observed to confirm the restoration of skin moisturizer production, antimicrobial barriers, and tight junctions in the skin barrier. Results Ceramide kinase and caspase 14 positive reaction were significantly higher in PSC than in LBE and DEX. Both NHE and cathelicidin showed higher positive reactions in PSC than in LBE and DEX. Claudin, and TLR-2 showed higher levels of positive staining in the PSC group than in the LBE and DEX groups. Conclusion It was confirmed that the PSCG extract can have the potential to restore the damaged skin barrier in atopic dermatitis.
This study presents Mine Green Framework(M.G.F) which can protect the slope of rock and tailings. M.G.F method provides the fiber frame which helps the growth of the plant in the barren site like mined rock slope. M.G.F system consists of the polyester fiber mat, soil, seeds and anchors for the attachment. The optimum rate of filling materials was figured out by many germination tests in order to improve the effect of filling materials and the optimum rate of filling materials was applied in four test sites individually. High rooting rate over 70% was confirmed in all field tests. Especially the moisturizer was the most important component of filling materials and it could make the better condition for the plants.
In this study, in an attempt to search for functional cosmetic ingredients from higher fungal, we have produced exopolysaccharides (GF-l, approximately carbohydrate 75%, protein 25%) and polysaccharide (GF-2) of mycelium extract, by submerged culture of Grifolafrondosa. For applications in anti-aging cosmetic field, we investigated the diverse biological activities. Antioxidant activity and inhibition of Matrixmetalloproteinases (MMPs) were investigated enzymatic assays by measuring the superoxide scavenging activity using xanthine-xanthine oxidase system and the proteolytic activity of MMPs using EnzChek Collagenase/Gelatinase kits, respectively. GF-l polysacchairde showed inhibition of superoxide radical by 90% at a concentration of 0.2% (w/v) and inhibition of collagenase by 45% at 0.2% (w/v). GF-2 polysaccharide of mycelium extract also exhibited good antioxidant activity. However, MMPs inhibition activity was relatively lower level compared to GF-l polysaccharides. The treatment of human dermal fibroblast (HDF) with GF-l and GF-2 polysaccharides increased the proliferation of fibroblast by approximately 23-25% at a concentration of 0.5% (w/v), also showed collagen synthesis increase in HDF by about 50% at 0.5% (w/v) compared to that of untreated control. We also report the moisturizing effects of polysaccharides in cosmetic products (O/W emulation) and its own ingredient, in vitro and in vivo. The GF-1 polysaccharide showed higher moisturizing ability than sodium hyaluronate, which is the most commonly used moisturizers ingredient. These results suggest the GF-l polysaccharide, protein-bound polysaccharide, may be used as an ingredient for new moisturizing and anti-aging cosmeceuticals.
