Effect of Lactobacillus buchneri 40788 and Buffered Propionic Acid on Preservation and Nutritive Value of Alfalfa and Timothy High-moisture Hay

  • The effects of Lactobacillus buchneri 40788 and buffered propionic acid on preservation, intake and digestibility of alfalfa (Medicago sativa) and timothy (Phleum pratense) hay were investigated. During baling, forages were treated with L. buchneri 40788 (1.2${\times}$10$^6$ CFU/g) as a liquid (LLB) or as a granular preparation (GLB), with buffered propionic acid (10 mL/kg, BPA), or left untreated (control). Triplicate 500 kg round bales of each treatment were put up at two moisture levels for each forage: 17%${\pm}$0.33% and 20%${\pm}$0.30% for timothy and 17%${\pm}$0.20% and 19%${\pm}$0.27% for alfalfa (mean${\pm}$SD). Bales were sampled for chemical and microbiological analyses after 0, 30 and 60 d of storage. Compared to controls, all preservatives reduced (p<0.05) heating of both forages at all moisture levels with the exception of alfalfa baled at 19% moisture. After 60 d of storage, GLB reduced (p<0.05) moulds in 17% timothy hay as compared to other treatments, but at 20% moisture, moulds were reduced in LLB- and BPA-treated timothy as compared to controls. In alfalfa at 17% moisture, total bacteria were lower (p<0.05) in GLB-treated bales than LLB or control bales, but yeast and total bacteria were only reduced in BPA-treated alfalfa at 19% moisture. In situ DM disappearance of timothy (both moisture levels) and alfalfa (19% moisture level) increased (p<0.05) with LLB treatment compared to control. Digestibility of both forages did not differ (p>0.05) among treatments, however, voluntary DM intake of LLB-treated timothy (1.32 kg/d) was 22.3% higher (p<0.05) than control, and 14.1% higher than BPA-treated timothy. Treating timothy and alfalfa hay with L. buchneri 40788 or buffered propionic acid may improve the nutritive value of the hay when baled at 17 to 20% moisture.

Influence of Moisture Content and Seed Dimensions on Mechanical Oil Expression from African Oil Bean (Pentaclethra macrophylla Benth) Seed

  • Purpose: New low-cost oilseeds are needed to meet an ever-increasing demand for oil for food, pharmaceutical, and industrial applications. African oil bean seed is a tropical crop that is underutilized and has high oil yields, but there have been no studies conducted on its mechanical oil expression up to now. The objective of this work was to investigate the effect of moisture content and seed dimensions on mechanical oil expression from the seeds. Methods: Fresh oil bean seeds were procured, de-hulled, and cleaned. Initial seed moisture content, obtained in accordance with the ASAE standard, was 12% dry basis (db). The seeds were further conditioned by dehydration and rehydration prior to oil expression to obtain four other moisture levels of 8, 10, 14, and 16% db. The major diameter of the seeds was measured using digital vernier calipers, and the seeds were classified into size dimensions (< 40, 41-45, 46-50, 51-55, and > 55 mm). The oil yield and expression efficiency were obtained in accordance with standard evaluation methods. Results: The highest oil yield and expression efficiency (47.74% and 78.96%, respectively) were obtained for a moisture content of 8% db and seed dimensions of < 40 mm, while the lowest oil yield and expression efficiency (41.35% and 68.28%, respectively) were obtained for a moisture content of 14% db and seed dimensions between 51-55 mm. A mathematical model was developed to predict oil yield for known moisture content and seed dimensions, with a coefficient of determination $R^2$ of 95% and the confidence level of the predictive model of 84.17%. The probability of prediction F ratio showed that moisture content influence was more significant than seed dimensions. Conclusions: The higher the moisture content and larger the seed dimensions, the lower the oil yield from African oil bean seeds.

Growth and Yield Responses of Corn (Zea mays L.) as Affected by Growth Period and Irrigation Intensity

  • The frequency and intensity of soil moisture stress associated with climate change has increasing, and the stability of field crop cultivation has decreasing. This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of soil moisture management method on growth and yield of corn. Soil moisture was managed at the grade of WSM (wet soil moisture, 34.0~42.9%), OSM (optimum soil moisture, 27.8~34.0%), DSM (dry soil moisture, 20.3~27.8%), and ESM (extreme dry moisture, 16.6~20.3%) during V8 (8th leaf stage)-VT (tasseling stage). After VT, irrigation was limited. The treated amount of irrigation was 54.1, 47.7, 44.0 and 34.5% of total water requirement, respectively. The potential evapotranspiration during the growing period was $3.29mm\;day^{-1}$, and upward movement of soil water was estimated by the AFKAE 0.5 model in the order of ESM, DSM, OSM, and WSM. We could confirm this phenomenon from actual observations. There was no significant difference in leaf characteristics, dry matter, and primary productivity depending on the level of soil moisture, but leaf development was delayed and dry weight decreased in DSM. However, dry weight and individual productivity of DSM increased after irrigation withdrawal compared to that of OSM. In DSM, ear yield and number of kernels per ear decreased, but water use efficiency and harvest index were higher than other treatments. Therefore, it is considered that the soil moisture is concentratedly managed before the V8 period, the V8-VT period is controlled within the range of 100 to 500 kPa (20.3~27.8%), and no additional irrigation is required after the VT.

2012년 겨울철 특별관측자료를 이용한 강수현상 시 대기 연직구조와 민감도 실험 (Vertical Atmospheric Structure and Sensitivity Experiments of Precipitation Events Using Winter Intensive Observation Data in 2012)

  • This study analyzed the synoptic distribution and vertical structure about four cases of precipitation occurrences using NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data and upper level data of winter intensive observation to be performed by National Institute of Meteorological Research at Bukgangneung, Incheon, Boseong during 63days from 4 JAN to 6 MAR in 2012, and Observing System Experiment (OSE) using 3DVAR-WRF system was conducted to examine the precipitation predictability of upper level data at western and southern coastal regions. The synoptic characteristics of selected precipitation occurrences were investigated as causes for 1) rainfall events with effect of moisture convergence owing to low pressure passing through south sea on 19 JAN, 2) snowfall events due to moisture inflowing from yellow sea with propagation of Siberian high pressure after low pressure passage over middle northern region on 31 JAN, 3) rainfall event with effect of weak pressure trough in west low and east high pressure system on 25 FEB, 4) rainfall event due to moisture inflow according to low pressures over Bohai bay and south eastern sea on 5 MAR. However, it is identified that vertical structure of atmosphere had different characteristics with heavy rainfall system in summer. Firstly, depth of convection was narrow due to absence of moisture convergence and strong ascending air current in middle layer. Secondly, warm air advection by veering wind with height only existed in low layer. Thirdly, unstable layer was limited in the narrow depth due to low surface temperature although it formed, and also values of instability indices were not high. Fourthly, total water vapor amounts containing into atmosphere was small due to low temperature distribution so that precipitable water vapor could be little amounts. As result of OSE conducting with upper level data of Incheon and Boseong station, 12 hours accumulated precipitation distributions of control experiment and experiments with additional upper level data were similar with ones of observation data at 610 stations. Although Equitable Threat Scores (ETS) were different according to cases and thresholds, it was verified positive influence of upper level data for precipitation predictability as resulting with high improvement rates of 33.3% in experiment with upper level data of Incheon (INC_EXP), 85.7% in experiment with upper level data of Boseong (BOS_EXP), and 142.9% in experiment with upper level data of both Incheon and Boseong (INC_BOS_EXP) about accumulated precipitation more than 5 mm / 12 hours on 31 January 2012.

배추무사마귀병 뿌리혹의 형성에 미치는 온도, 토양수분, 토양 pH, 광의 영향 (Effects of Temperature, Soil Moisture, Soil pH and Light on Root Gall Development of Chinese Cabbage by Plasmodiophora brassicae)

  • Development of root galls of clubroot disease on Chinese cabbage seedlings was first observed 17days after inoculation of Plasmodiophora brassicae at $25^{\circ}C$ 4-11days earlier than at 5, 20, 3$0^{\circ}C$ and 35$^{\circ}C$. Subsequent enlargement of root galls was also fastest at $25^{\circ}C$ and 2$0^{\circ}C$ but delayed at 15$^{\circ}C$ and 3$0^{\circ}C$ or above. Chinese cabbage seedlings with root gall formation showed reduction in number of leaves above ground fresh weight and amount of root hairs but increase in root weight, Root galls development was highest at soil moisture level of 80% of maximum soil moisture capacity than at 60% and 100%. Optimum soil pH for root gall development was pH 6 although root galls were formed at a range of pH 5 to 8. Period of light illumination also affected root gall development with the greatest gall development at 12hr/12hr in light/dark period and the least at 8hr/16hr. Site of root gall formation and gall shape did not differ greatly among treatments of temperature soil moisture pH and light experiments.

정어리 마쇄육의 저수분에서의 유전적 특성 2. 전분함량과 온도에 따른 유전특성 (Dielectric Properties of Sardine-Starch Paste at Low Moisture Content 2. Effect of Starch Contents and Temperatures)

  • In previous paper (Lee and Kim, 1983) the effect of moisture level and frequency on dielectric properties of sardine starch paste was mentioned. The effect of temperature and starch content of the paste upon dielectric permittivity and activation energy was discussed in this report. Addition of starch affected on dielectric property. Increases of starch in the mixtures resulted in higher complex permittivity and lower critical moisture content (hc) as shown in the mixtures with $20\%$ and $50\%$ starch which were ${\varepsilon}^{\ast}=2.97+j0.36,\;hc=8.0\%;\;{\varepsilon}^{\ast}=3.54+j0.44,\;hc=7.8\%$, respectively while being ${\varepsilon}^{\ast}=2.73+j0.29,\;hc=8.4\%$ for the plain ground sardine meat. When temperature was raised the complex permittivity tended to increase at above the critical moisture content in all cases. The activation energies for plain ground meat and $30\%$ starch added mixture at below the critical moisture of $8.4\%$ were 15.44 kcal/mol and 13.86 kcal/mol while those at the moisture of $12.2\%$ were 10.27 kcal/mol and 9.31 kcal/mol, respectively.

수분 첨가량에 따른 절편의 노화도에 관한 연구 (Retrogradation Characteristics of Jeolpyon Prepared by Different Moisture Addition)

  • 수분의 첨가수준을 달리하여 제조한 절편의 저장기간에 따른 노화특성 및 품질특성을 평가하였다. 색도는 저장기간에 따른 시료간의 유의적인 차이를 보였는데, 수분첨가량이 감소함에 따라 저장기간에 따른 수분의 손실로 황색도는 증가하고 명도는 감소하였다. 물성특성치는 저장기간이 증가함에 따라 그 값이 증가하여 떡이 단단해 졌는데, 35∼45%의 수분첨가구가 저장 72시간째까지 일정한 값을 나타내어 물성적으로 가장 안정하였다. 저장기간에 따른 노화속도는 35% 수분 첨가구는 노화가 다른 시험구에 비해서 가장 천천히 진행되는 것으로 나타났다. 관능검사 결과 35∼45% 수분첨가구를 가장 선호하였다. 노화속도가 느린 35% 수분첨가구가 관능적으로도 우수하여 본 실험에서 가장 알맞은 수분첨가량으로 설정할 수 있었다.

  • 인삼제품(人蔘製品)의 품질안정성(品質安定性)을 구명(究明)하기 위하여 홍삼정(紅蔘精)(RGE),홍삼정분(紅蔘精紛)SD-RGEP) 및 홍삼정차(紅蔘精茶)(RGET)에 대한 흡습특성(吸濕特性)을 조사(調査)하였고, 또 제품별(製品別) 평형수분(平衡水分) 함량(含量)으로 BET 방정식(方程式)에 따라 단분자막수분함양(單分子膜水分含量)을 구하여 이들 제품(製品)의 적정수분함량(適正水分含量)을 설정(設定)하였으며, 제품별기준수분함량(製品別基準水分含量) 및 현행유통과정(現行流通過程) 중의 수분함량(水分舍量)과 비교(比較)하였다. 1. 홍삼정분(紅蓼精粉)은 단분자막수분함량(單分子膜水分合量)이 4.08${\sim}$4.65%의 범위안에 있으므로 기준수분함량(基準水分含量)을 하향조정(下向調整)하여 적정수분함량(適正水分含量)으로 4.4${\pm}$0.3%로 설정(設定)함이 바람직하다고 사료된다. 2. 홍삼정차(紅蔘精茶)(RGET)는 0.93$\sim$l.37%의 범위 안에서 BET 단분자막(單分子膜)을 형성(形成)하므로 홍삼정차(紅蔘精茶)의 기준수분함량(基準水分含量)(1.2%이하) 보다 0.17%까지 상향조정(上向調整)이 가능(可能)하다고 판단된다. 3. 제품별(製品別) 초기수분함량(初期水分含量)을 조정(調整)하여 학대조건(虐待條件)($48{\pm}2^{\circ}C$, 75% RH)하에서의 저장실험(貯藏實驗)한 결과(結果)는 단분자막수분함량(單分子膜水分合量)보다 높은 량(量)에서도 안정(安定)하였으나 기타의 노화반응(劣化反應)을 고려하여 단분자막수분함량(單分子膜水分含量)으로 설정(設定)하 는 것이 적당할 것으로 판단되었다. 그러나 본 저장(貯藏) 실험(寶驗)은 개선(改善)된 내정(內栓)(Al-foil $11{\mu}m$)을 사용하였기 때문에, 안정성(安定性)이 더 증가(增加)된 것으로 판단되므로 현행(現行) 포장재질(包裝材質)의 개선(改善)이 바람직할 것으로 사료된다. 4. 홍삼정(紅蓼精)(RGE)의 적정수분함량(適正水分含量) 설정(設定)을 위한 미생물생육조사(微生物生育調査) 결과(結果) 어떤 균주(菌株)라도 51 %이하의 수분함량(水分含量)에서는 생육(生育)이 불가능(不可能)하였으나 홍삼정(紅蒙精)의 기준수분함량(基準水分含量)(36.0${\pm}$1.0%)보다 4%정도 상향조정(上向調整)한 40.0${\pm}$1.0%로 적정수분함량(適正水分含量)을 설정(設定)하는 것이 유통과정(流通過程) 중의 점도(粘度)의 증가(增加) 등의 문제점을 다소 완화할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

전립분 첨가시 빵생지의 물성 및 이스트의 가스발생력에 미치는 영향 (Effects of whole wheat flour on the Rheological Properties of dough gassing power of yeast)

  • 밀가루전립분 혼입이 빵생지의 물성 및 yeast(S.cerevisiae)의 가스발생력에 미치는 영향을 검토한 실험은 밀전립분의 혼입비율 0, 25, 50, 75, 100%의 5군으로 구성 해 그 제빵성에 대해서 검토하였다. 1) 패리노그래프에 의해 흡수율을 측정한 결과 밀전립분은 빵용 밀가루에 비해 1.3배의 흡수율을 나타냈다. 2) Texture meter에 의한 dough 정도는 수분일정 생지의 경우는 혼입비율의 증가와 함께 딱딱하게 되고 응집성은 감소하였다. 흡수율에 의해 산출한 최적수분량은 조정한 경우의 dough의 점도 및 응집성은 제빵용 밀가루와 거의 같았다. 3) 밀전립분은 S.cerevisiae의 가스발생력에 좋은 영향을 주지 않고 수분일정생지의 경우 전체 가스 발생량 및 내포잔류 가스량과 혼입비율에서도 거의 비슷한 결과를 얻었다. 그리고 수분조정반죽의 경우는 밀전립분 혼입비율의 증가와 함께 전체 가스발생량 및 내포한 잔류 가스량의 증가가 확인되었다. 4) 빵의 품질평가의 결과 밀전립분을 25-50%혼입하여 수분 조정한 것이 가장 좋은 것으로 확인되었다.

주요 활엽수종의 함수율별 발열량 예측 (Estimation of the Heating Value of Major Broad-Leaved Trees due to Moisture Content)

  • Heating value is the one of most important factor in energy use of the woods. This study was investigated for determining the heating value according to the moisture content level(%) of major broad-leaved tree in Korea. Heating value was decreased rapidly regardless the kinds of species (Liriodendron tulipifera, Alnus japonica, and Quercus mongolica) and parts of woods (wood part, and bark) as the moisture content (MC) was increased. In addition, bark had higher heating value than wood part. Liriodendron tulipifera showed the highest heating value among the other two species.
