The strength of vertical joints of precast concrete large panel structures depends on the many factors, such as the bond strength of grout concrete (or mortar), the interlocking of the shear keys, the dowel action of horizontal bars. Many experimental studies have been conducted to in vestigate the shear strength of the vertical joints. In domestic, a few design formulas to predict shear strength of the vertical joint were proposed by some investigators, but formulas were based on limited experimental results. The objective of this paper is to propose a suitable formula for the shear strength of vertical joints with 94 vertical joints experimental data using the modified Mohr-Coulomb's 4ield theory and regression analysis. From the comparison of the proposed formula with others, it is shown that the proposed formula can be used economically for the design of vertical joints.
Although the Mohr-Coulomb and Hoek-Brown failure criteria have been adopted widely in rock mechanics, they neglect the ${\sigma}_2$ effect. The result of true triaxial tests on rock samples, however, reveals that the ${\sigma}_2$ effect on strength of rocks is considerable, so that rock failure criteria taking into account the influence of ${\sigma}_2$ are necessary for the precise stability evaluation of rock structures. In this study, a new nonlinear 3-D failure criterion has been suggested by combining the Hoek-Brown criterion with the smooth octahedral shape function taken from Jiang & Pietruszczak (1988). The performance of the new criterion was assessed by comparing the strength predictions from both the suggested criterion and the corresponding linear 3-D criterion. The resulting fit of the new criterion to the true triaxial test data for six rock types taken from the literature shows that the criterion fits the experimental data very well. Furthermore, for the data sets having data taken in the low ${\sigma}_3$ range, the nonlinear failure criterion works better than the linear criterion.
Experiments on steel-concrete interface are performed to investigate and determine the mechanical roles and properties of interface parameters. The intrinsic different nature of bonded and unbonded interfaces are addressed based on the experimental observations that were obtained from two types of tests considering bonded and unbonded interfaces. The unbonded tests are performed for the specimens that are in unbonded when the initially bonded specimens are tested first. Four cases of lateral confinements including pure slip, and low and medium levels of lateral pressure are taken into account to investigate the effects of lateral confinements on interface behavior. It is shown that the maximum shear strengths, the levels of residual strengths and the Mode II fracture energy release rates are linearly related to the confinement levels. Based on the experimental evidences obtained from this study, the values of interface parameters required in a steel-concrete interface constitutive model will be presented in the companion paper.
Mechanical properties of steel-concrete interface were evaluated on the basis of experimental observations. The properties included bond strength, unbounded and bonded friction angles, residual level of friction angle, mode I fracture energy, mode II bonded fracture energy and unbonded slip-friction energy under different levels of normal stress, and shape parameters to define geometrical shape of failure envelope. For this purpose, a typical type of constitutive model of describing steel-concrete interface behavior was presented based on a hyperbolic three-parameter Mohr-Coulomb type failure criterion. The constitutive model depicts the strong dependency of interface behavior on bonding condition of interface, bonded or unbounded. Values of the interface parameters were determined through interpretation of experimental results, geometry of failure envelope and sensitivity analysis. Nonlinear finite element analysis that incorporates steel-concrete interface as well as material nonlinearities of concrete and steel were performed to predict the experimental results.
Most natural deposits of sandy soil possess some degree of cementation resulting from the deposition and precipitation of cementing agents. The presence of cementation can have a significant influence on the stiffness and volume change behavior, and the strength of soils. An important feature of deposits of cemented sandy soils is their ability to remain stable in surprisingly high and almost vertical man-made cuts as well as natural slopes. Numerous field observations and studies of failures in slopes of cemented soils have reported that application of conventional analysis techniques of slope stability is inadequate. That is not only due to the fact that the failure surface of the slope is not circular, but also the fact that the average shear stress along the failure surface is much smaller than the shear strength measured in laboratory shear experiments. This observation alerts us to the fact that a mechanism different from conventional Mohr-Coulomb shear failure takes place, which may be related to fracture processes, which in turn are governed by fracture mechanics concepts and theory. In this study, steep slopes in cemented sand were assessed using fracture mechanics concepts. The results showed that FEM coupled with fracture mechanics concepts provides an excellent alternative in the design and safety assessment of earth structures in cemented soils.

In this paper, we perform structural analysis for a base frame which is used to support a motor for large centrifugal compressor drives and a safety assessment according to the concrete placement. First, the structural analysis about four loading conditions for the motor base frame was conducted and the structural safety was evaluated through both the maximum distortion energy theory and Mohr-Coulomb theory. It was possible to perform a more reasonable safety evaluation against local stresses occurring at the discontinuous portion of the fragile structural members by applying the safety assessment through ASME VIII Div. 2. In addition, the motor base frames with and without the internal concrete placement were quantitatively compared by the structural analysis and safety evaluation using ASME code and it was found to improve the structural integrity due to the concrete placement.

In this study, the finite element method using 8-node isoparametric element is developed theoretically and simulated to see the deformation of soil and plate, when the circular plate resting on Boussinesq's soil type is loaded axisymmetrically. The results of numerical analysis using the Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion, and experimental analysis are approximative, assuming that soil is elasto-plastic medium. The paper shows that the plastic zone of soil medium is displayed at the near the edge of plate at the first place; when the plastic zone of soil medium is linked around central axis, the external load is termed by critical load, and then the contact pressure changes abruptly, in this case it is approved to be the risk of shear failure.
The stability assessment of a concrete liner of a compressed air storage tunnel should be performed by an approach which is different from that commonly used for the liners of road tunnels, since the liner is exposed to high air pressure. In this study, the stability analysis method for the liner of compressed air storage tunnel is proposed based on the elastic and elasto-plastic solutions of the thick-walled cylinder problem. In case of elastic analysis, the yield initiation condition at the inner boundary is considered as the failure condition of the liner, while the condition which results in the extension of yielding zone to a certain depth is taken as a failure indicator of the liner in the elasto-plastic analysis taking Mohr-Coulomb criterion. The application of the proposed method revealed that the influence of the relative magnitude of boundary loads on the stability of liner is considerable. In particular, noting that the estimation of the outer boundary load may be relatively difficult, it is thought that the precise prediction of outer boundary load is very important in the analysis. Accordingly, the emphasis is put on the selection of the liner installation time, which may govern the magnitude of outer boundary load.
The generalized Hoek-Brown failure criterion, the strength parameters of which are determined by using the GSI index, is an empirical nonlinear failure criterion of rock mass and has been widely employed in various rock engineering practices. Many rock engineering practitioners, however, are still familiar with the description of the strength of rock mass in terms of friction angle and cohesion. In addition, almost all rock mechanics softwares incorporate the simple linear Mohr-Coulomb function. Therefore, it is necessary to provide a tool to implement the Hoek-Brown function in the framework of the Mohr-Coulomb criterion. In this study, the use of upper-bound solution of limit analysis for bearing capacity of a strip footing resting on the ground surface is proposed for the estimation of the equivalent friction angle and cohesion of rock mass incorporating the generalized Hoek-Brown failure criterion. The upper-bound bearing capacity is expressed in terms of friction angle by use of the relationship between tangential friction angle and tangential cohesion implied in the generalized Hoek-Brown function. The friction angle minimizing the upper-bound bearing capacity is taken as the equivalent friction angle. Through the illustrative implementations of the proposed method, the influences of GSI, $m_i$ and D on the equivalent friction angle and cohesion are investigated.
Since the failure behavior of transversely isotropic rocks is significantly different from that of isotropic rocks, it is necessary to develop a transversely isotropic rock failure function in order to evaluate the stability of rock structures constructed in transversely isotropic rock masses. In this study, a spatial distribution function for strength parameters of transversely isotropic rocks is proposed, which is based on the Cassini oval curve proposed by 17th century astronomer Giovanni Domenico Cassini to model the orbit of the Sun around the Earth. The proposed distribution function consists of two model parameters which could be identified through triaxial compression tests on transversely isotropic rock samples. The original Mohr-Coulomb (M-C) failure function is extended to a three-dimensional transversely isotropic M-C failure function by employing the proposed strength parameter distribution function for the spatial distributions of the friction angle and cohesion. In order to verify the suitability of the transversely isotropic M-C failure function, both the conventional triaxial compression and true triaxial compression tests of transversely isotropic rock samples are simulated. The predicted results from the numerical experiments are consistent with the failure behavior of transversely isotropic rocks observed in the actual laboratory tests. In addition, the simulated result of true triaxial compression tests hints that the dependence of rock strength on intermediate principal stress may be closely related to the distribution of the microstructures included in the rock samples.
