Prefabricated Modular Buildings are increasingly becoming popular in the construction industry as a method to achieve financially economical buildings in a very short construction time. This increasing demand for modular construction has expanded into multi-storey applications where the effect of lateral loads such as seismic loads becomes critical. However, there is a lack of detailed scientific research that has explored the behaviour of modular buildings and their connection systems against seismic loads. This paper will therefore present the nonlinear time history analysis of a multi-storey modular building against several ground motion records. The critical elements that need special attention in designing a modular building in similar seismic conditions is discussed with a deeper explanation of the behaviour of the overall system.
Purpose: Prefabricated modular space such as a container construction has recently been interested unlike the conventional construction method, and their scale have expanded from small buildings such as cafes, houses and pensions to shopping centers, complex cultural spaces where shows and exhibitions are possible doing. In this way, the container is in the spotlight as an advantage such as mobility, flexibility, correspondence, economic efficiency, recyclability and so on. However, there are no specific guidelines and standard design methods in aspects of structural calculation, functional insulation and environmental configuration. Therefore, as the first step to resolve these problems, this study has focused on the field of environmental performance of container construction, presented appropriate guidelines and searched ways to improve performances. Method: For this study, seven types of the modular building were chosen and compared, and their energy performances have been analyzed using a proven simulation tool. Essential methodology and terminology were examined to estimate and judge their efficiency. Result: In conclusion, energy performances depend on specific configuration of combined unit spaces, and design guidelines cold be set up for promoting their use in the practical field.

The purpose of this study is to suggest the plan formation for university dormitory's living unit by the modular unit of the pre-fabricated architecture, Pursuing this, this study conducts the investigation of present domestic situation of prefabricated construction and practices plan formation for living unit concentrating on the dweller's satisfaction by solving the problems which hitherto constructed dormitory had, especially collapse of dweller's territoriality. Consequently, this study presents the feasibility of modular unit of present prefabricated construction as a new method of dormitory's living unit construction, and suggests the pertinent plan formation for the improvement of the dweller's territoriality.

The unit modular system is a type of prefabricated construction method that completes the building by uniting the modular units on site by transporting the unit module structure manufactured in the factory to the site. Since the unit module structure is not only the frame but also the finished form including the inner and outer materials, it is most likely to be brought into the field. Therefore, not only the damage of the inner and outer materials but also deformation of frame structure due to the vibration generated during the transportation of the vehicle, And it is necessary to take appropriate methods when transporting the module structure. However, there are no methods to prevent modular structure damage due to vehicle vibration in domestic and foreign modular transportation guidelines or standards. In this study, we investigate the vibrations during the vehicle transportation of the module structure through the road driving test, identify the vibration frequency characteristics of the vehicle through FFT analysis, and propose a vibration reduction methods for module transportation.

A modular construction method includes factory-prefabricated room-sized volumetric units. Although low-rise buildings have been constructed worldwide using this method for more than 30 years, it is a relatively new technology in high-rise construction. There are three basic methods of constructing high-rise buildings using modular construction: the core method, the core-and-podium combination method, and the modular in-fill method. While the first two have been used in the USA and in several European countries, the third method, introduced in 2011 by an international cruise ship development firm, is a rather new approach for which there are few case histories. Therefore, its applicability and construction feasibility should be verified. As a pilot study to test the applicability of the modular in-fill method, a 12-story residential building was built in Korea. This paper describes a case study of the pilot project. The advantages and disadvantages of the method and its applicability in terms of cost effectiveness and construction schedule management were evaluated.

Modular construction is attracting attention as the solution of recent problems in construction site. Such as lack of construction workforce, increasing labor costs, work delay due to extreme weather events and strengthening government regulations. However, despite the many advantages, Modular construction has not been activated dueto high construction costs compared to other construction methods. Accordingly, the object of this study is priority derivation of prefabricated house cost reduction factors and use as basic research data. For research performance, we have analyzed the blueprint and bill of quantities of a modular construction based public dormitory which was built in 2013. In result, the proportion of modular construction and on-site construction is 66% and 34%, and the construction cost proportion by activity was devided in to construction(79%), machinery(7%), electricity(5%) and civil(9%). Among these results in order to reduce costs, interior finishing(19.4) steel-frame(16.9%), metal works(13.5%), RC(11.8%), joinery(7.3%) is the order requires focused management.

In the unit modular construction, the unit module prefabricated in a factory with a high level of accuracy does not fit completely onto the ground-joint junction due to the low accuracy of the ground work. This difference in the level of accuracy can cause diverse problems, such as twisting the upper unit modules and loosening the connection between the module and the footing. On this background, the aim of this study is to develop a technique for adjusting the height of the prefabricated individual footing. To accomplish the aim, a height adjustment method using bolts and nuts is proposed, and a shop drawing and the construction sequence are also presented in this study. The structural safety is verified through a structure simulation. In the future, research will be conducted on a mock-up test of the height adjustment method developed in this study, and an analysis of economic feasibility will be performed in order to verify its constructability and usability.

The modular building system is a type of prefabricated construction method, and is an industrialized building system that transports, assembles, and completes a three-dimensional module manufactured in a factory to the site. The economics of a modular building system where 50 to 80% of the entire process takes place in a modular factory is dominated by productivity of the factory manufacturing process. Since the building of the module is finished by the combination of unit parts produced by each material, it is necessary to manage the process in each module unit. However, currently marketed process control programs do not reflect the features of these modular methods. In this paper, we introduce Modular Factory Design software(MFD 2019) that can make modular unit production plan which reflects production base(modular factory) and production target(application and number of modular units). In order to verify software compatibility and reliability, two production plans with different production methods were formulated and simulated.

Recently, modular construction has been begun to introduce actively for improvment of productivity in the construction industry. By the way, the construction technology is being IT through BIM. This is why modular construction needs BIM technology. In this study, we analyze the problems in the current modular construction at factory production stage. The way to extract 3D shop drawings using BIM is suggested to solve this problem.
This study was conducted to apply the modular construction method to Han-ok. The modular method, which is differentiated from the existing one, means a construction method that equipments, windows and interior materials are prefabricated as a six-sided object at a plant and then they are assembled at the least process on the spot. As for the theoretical observation, the theoretical basis to apply the modular method to the modular housing and Hanok was divided into environmental and economic aspect. In order to apply the modular method to Hanok, the unit scale and size were selected and the plane of unit module Hanok was developed. And a standard with regard to the unit combination and material lifting transportation method was set and planned. In addition, through the comparison the unit modular Hanok to the existing Hanok, the difference was analyzed and the strength was identified in terms fo design method, structure, construction method, period and cost. In final, the conclusion, with regard to the economic, technical application in future, was drawn through arranging the study contents. The unit modular Hanok to carry out the high-quality dwelling through construction period reduction, standardized construction materials and improved insulation performance can meet the demands for a paradigm of new construction technology.
