  • This paper discusses the applicability of the decomposition principle to an LP (Linear Programming) problem. Through a case study on product mix problems in a chemical process of Korean Steel Chemical Co., Ltd., the decomposition algorithm, LP Simplex method and a modified method are compared and evaluated in computation time and number of iterations.

  • The propose of this study is to presnet a generalized linear/goal programming software, which has been developed to run on mickrocomputers with at least 512 K bytes of memory. The main characteristics of our algorithm for solving LP/GP problems are outlined as follows ; First, it uses the revised simplex algorithm, which is the most efficient computational procedure for computers. Second, it employs the sparse matrix technique to overcome the limited memory of microcomputers. Last, it uses the modified product form of invers (MPFI) to reduce round-off errors. The test runs with our code written in FORTRAN show that it can be used as an effective tool for solving linear/goal programming problems of considerable size.

  • New algorithms are derived for nonlinear programming problems which are characterized by their large variables and equality and inequality constraints. The algorithms are based upon the introduction of the Dependent-Variable-Elimination method, Independent-Variable-Reduction method, Optimally-Ordered-Triangular-Factorization method, Equality-Inequality-Sequential-Satisfaction method, etc. For a case study problem relating to the optimal determination of load flow in a 10-bus, 13-line sample power system, several approaches are undertaken, such as SUMT, Lagrange's Multiplier method, sequential applications of linear and quadratic programming method. For applying the linear programming method, the conventional simplex algorithm is modified to the large-system-oriented one by the introduction of the Two-Phase method and Variable-Upper-Bounding method, thus resulting in remarkable savings in memory requirements and computing time. The case study shows the validity and effectivity of the algorithms presented herein.

  • This paper concerns a modified perturbation method and a least square approach to synthesize an optimum beam pattern of a thinned sensor array with respect to element spacing. In the modified perturbation, the antenna spacing is perturbed iteratively such that the sidelobes are equalized via a linear programming approach. The least square approach is proposed to improve the array performance for the thinned array using the fact that the number of sidelobes is more than the number of element spacings. It is demonstrated that the least square approach performs better than the modified perturbation method.

  • When a Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) method is used to solve the nonlinear programming problems, one of the main difficulties is that the Quadratic Programming (QP) subproblem may be incompatible. In this paper, an SQP algorithm is given by modifying the traditional QP subproblem and applying a class of $l_{\infty}$ penalty function whose penalty parameters can be adjusted automatically. The new QP subproblem is compatible. Under the extended Mangasarian-Fromovitz constraint qualification condition and the boundedness of the iterates, the algorithm is showed to be globally convergent to a KKT point of the non-linear programming problem.

  • In this paper, a mixed-integer programming approach is presented for adjusting the voltage profiles in a power system. The advent of large-scaled system makes the reactive power and voltage problem-an attempt to achieve an overall improvement of system security, service quality and economy-more complex and seriously, Although the problem is originally a nonlinear optimization problem, it can be formulated as a mixed integer linear programming(MILP) problem without deteriorating of solution accuracy to a certain extent. The MILP code is developed by the branch and bound process search for the optimal solution. The variable for modeling transformer tap positions is handled as discrete one, and other variables continuous ones. Numerical data resulting from case study using a modified IEEE 30 bus system with outaged line show that the MILP can produce more reductions of magnitude in the operating cost. The convergence characteristics of the results are also presented and discussed.

  • Linear motor (LM) based shuttle cars will play an important role in the future transportation systems of marine terminals to cope with increasing container flows. These systems are known as agile port terminals because of their significant advantages. However, routing for multiple shuttle cars is still an open issue. We present a network model of a container yard and propose constrained dynamic programming (DP) for its routing strategy with collision avoidance. The algorithm is a modified version of typical DP which is used to find an optimal path for a single traveler. We evaluate the new algorithm through simulation results for three shuttle cars in a mesh-type container yard.

  • In this paper we use measure theory to solve a wide range of second-order boundary value ordinary differential equations. First, we transform the problem to a first order system of ordinary differential equations(ODE's)and then define an optimization problem related to it. The new problem in modified into one consisting of the minimization of a linear functional over a set of Radon measures; the optimal measure is then approximated by a finite combination of atomic measures and the problem converted approximatly to a finite-dimensional linear programming problem. The solution to this problem is used to construct the approximate solution of the original problem. Finally we get the error functional E(we define in this paper) for the approximate solution of the ODE's problem.

  • A materials acquisition planning (MAP) problem that involves the determination of how much to order of a number of different items from a number of different suppliers is considered. This particular problem is modelled as a nonlinear mixed integer programming problem. A solution procedure based upon the partition of variables is developed to handle the MAP problem. This solution procedure utilizes a modified Hooke-Jeeves Pattern Search procedure along with a linear programming simplex algorithm. An example problem is presented and the results of applying the suggested solution procedure to this problem are reported.
