In this thesis, we conduct a comprehensive analysis of the current situation and the inherent problems found in modern statistics education in Korea. We investigate the American probability and statistics curriculum currently used in Wisconsin and discuss the overall state of statistics education in The United States. Through comparison of both the Korean and Wisconsin model, we explore the future direction of statistical education.

The very first statistics department in Korean universities was founded in 1962, meaning it has been 57 years since Korean academia has regarded statistics as a wholly independent field of study. Dr. Junbo Kim was the first faculty member hired by Korea University's statistics department. He made a seminal contribution to the development and publication of statistics textbooks in those early years, and in 1971, spearheaded the efforts to found the Korean Statistical Society, serving as its first president. Naturally, Dr. Kim's significant contributions have laid the cornerstones for the advancement of statistics as an independent field of study in Korea. In this paper, I will explore two main subjects: one is the early history of the Korean Statistical Society with a special emphasis on Dr. Kim's contributions, and the other is an analytical overview his publications. Specifically, I will focus on Modern Statistics: A Synthesis of Statistics and Estimates』(Kim, 1954), and 『Inferential Statistics: An Introduction to Sample Survey and Experimental Design』(Kim, 1956).

The recent computational revolution of Bayesian statistics has expanded use of the Bayesian statistics significantly; however, Bayesian statistics face a new set of challenges in the era of information technology. We survey the history of Bayesian statistics briefly and its expansion in the modern times. We then take a prospective future view of statistics and list challenges that the statistics community faces.

The squared Euclid distance of the values which is transformed by P-matrix of Ahn et al. (2003) is in proportion to the squared Euclid distance of cell's relative frequencies in two Contingency Tables. We propose the method of using the PP-values for the analysis of modern poems and questionnaire data.

Recently, as the sleep disorder problem of modern people deepens, the interest towards quality of sleep is increasing. To increase the quality of modern people's sleep. This paper has suggested an LED lighting control system according to the sleep stage using PPG sensors of wearable devices. The pulse of the wrist radial artery was measured using a wearable device mounted with PPG sensor, which enables heart rate-measuring, and by using the point that heart rate lowers during stable sleep than non-sleeping, the LED lighting of indoors was controlled, which is the disturbing element when sleeping. For the performance evaluation, a 10-Fold cross analysis was conducted for performance evaluation, and a result of an average accuracy 87.02% was obtained as a result. Therefore, the LED lighting control system according to the sleep stage using a wearable device of this paper is expected to contribute to raise the quality of the user's life.

This study aims to understand how consumers consume by presenting the concept of 'consumption style' and the meaning of consumption for modern consumers. As modern consumers cannot lead their daily lives without engaging in consumption, their daily lives are deeply related to consumption. However, we have not been largely interested in how we manage consumption. It is a fact that marketing-oriented studies are focused on consumers for the establishment of corporate activities and strategies until now. For the analysis of the research, SPSS for Windows and AMOS were used. In order to examine the general characteristics of the investigation object, the technical statistics of frequency, percentage, average and standard deviation were obtained. To develop the research item analysis, Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and cluster analysis were conducted. Based on the meaning of consumption through the consideration of preceding studies, the consumption style was extracted with 4 economic, socio-cultural, psychological and ethical perspectives. Also, 4groups were classified according to the type of consumption style: professional consumers, practical consumers, indifferent consumers and emotional consumers.

Modern statistics is used in many fields; however many users face difficulties in understanding statistical concepts. On the other hand, elementary school curriculum covers stem and leaf plot, pie chart, charts for proportional data as well as descriptive statistics including the mean. We find that an "intuitive" statistical package focused on 5-8 graders for statistical education will help future statistics users understand statistical concepts at earlier stages of their lives.

In the past half century little effort has been made for the improvement of teaching and learning statistics compared with other parts of school mathematics. But recently data analysis has begun to play a prominant role in the national reform efforts of mathematics curricula in the United States of America and the United Kingdom. In this paper we overview modern statistical thinking differed from mathematical thinking and examine the problems of current old-style teaching of statistics. And, we discuss the current data handling(or data analysis) emphasis in the national curriculum of mathematics in the countries mentioned above. We explore the reform direction of statistics teaching; changing the philosophy of teaching statistics, teaching real data analysis, emphasis of using computer, and teaching statistical inference not as mathematics but as intuitive data-centered approach.

The role of the department of statistics in Korea is discussed. There are more than 70 statistics departments in the universities throughout the country. However, we can hardly find that statisticians and statistical service organizations who are responsible for, for example, identifying the statistical services needed by clients in our society. In developed countries, statistics is now widely employed in all areas of societies including industry and government. Statistics and statisticians also have vital internal roles in production, research, marketing, and support functions of the modern corporation as stated by Marquardt(1987). Professors in the department of statistics are responsible for solving the problems with the discipline of statistics and with statisticians. In this article some of those problems are explored.

Computer intensive bootstrap methods are studied as a tool of statistics. Practical calculation and theoretical justification problem of the methods in estimating the sampling distribution and construction confidence region of parameters are discussed through several examples. Statistical meaning of the methods are also considered.
