  • This study investigated the relation between stressful life events and adjustment in elementary school children, with particular emphasis on the potential main and stress-buffering effects of social support and social problem solving skills. 4-6 graders (N=170) completed the Social Support Appraisals Scale(SSAS) and social problem solving skills task. The SSAS is a 31-item measure that taps the child's perceptions or appraisals of family, peer, and teacher support. Their parents provided ratings of stress in the child's environment and ratings of the child's behavioral adjustment. Teachers provided ratings of the child's behavioral and academic adjustment. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses and graphic display were used to analyze the data. The major findings were that (1) The results for parent-rated problems supported a stress-buffering model for family support and problem solving. (2) The results for teacher-rated problems were consistent with the stress-buffering model of social support. (3) The results for grade-point average supported a main effect model for problem solving. peer support, and family support. In addition, teacher support had the strongest stress-buffering effect on grade-point average.

  • Forecasting of electricity demand have difficulty in adapting to abrupt weather changes along with a radical shift in major regional and global climates. This has lead to increasing attention to research on the immediate and accurate forecasting model. Technically, this implies that a model requires only a few input variables all of which are easily obtainable, and its predictive performance is comparable with other competing models. To meet the ends, this paper presents an energy demand forecasting model that uses the variable selection or extraction methods of data mining to select only relevant input variables, and employs support vector regression method for accurate prediction. Also, it proposes a novel performance measure for time-series prediction, shift index, followed by description on preprocessing procedure. A comparative evaluation of the proposed method with other representative data mining models such as an auto-regression model, an artificial neural network model, an ordinary support vector regression model was carried out for obtaining the forecast of monthly electricity demand from 2000 to 2008 based on data provided by Korea Energy Economics Institute. Among the models tested, the proposed method was shown promising results than others.

  • Purpose: This study was designed to construct a structural model explaining depression in university students. Methods: Data were collected from 1,640 university students by questionnaire, and analyzed using AMOS 5.0 to test the hypothetical model. Results: Fitness statistics for the modified model were GFI=.93, AGFI=.89, NFI=.91, and RMSEA=.081. All the 12 paths in the modified model proved to be statistically significant. Depression of university students accounted for 52% of the covariance by the factors. The factor that had the most influence on depression was individual vulnerability, and followed by sequence order, stress, social support, coping, and self-efficacy. Depression was influenced directly by individual vulnerability, stress, social support, and coping, and indirectly by individual vulnerability, stress, social support, and self-efficacy. Conclusion: A screening and management system for the high risk group is needed to effectively prevent depression and reduce rate of depression in university students. Detailed support programs which specifically deal with prevailing stressors should be developed to effectively reduce the harmful effects of individual vulnerability and stress. It is anticipated that the model constructed in this study could be utilized as a reference in developing various strategies to prevent and intervene depression in university students.

  • Early criticality prediction models that determine whether a design entity is fault-prone or not are becoming more and more important as software development projects are getting larger. Effective predictions can reduce the system development cost and improve software quality by identifying trouble-spots at early phases and proper allocation of effort and resources. Many prediction models have been proposed using statistical and machine learning methods. This paper builds a prediction model using Support Vector Machine(SVM) which is one of the most popular modern classification methods and compares its prediction performance with a well-known prediction model, BackPropagation neural network Model(BPM). SVM is known to generalize well even in high dimensional spaces under small training data conditions. In prediction performance evaluation experiments, dimensionality reduction techniques for data set are not used because the dimension of input data is too small. Experimental results show that the prediction performance of SVM model is slightly better than that of BPM and polynomial kernel function achieves better performance than other SVM kernel functions.

  • The Core Support Barrel (CSB) is a major component of Reactor Internals, and is designed to support and protect the Reactor Core. In this study, Reactor Core, Core Shroud and CSB were simplified to coaxial cylinders and then the offset of Reactor Core & Core Shroud to the dynamic characteristic of CSB was analyzed. For the beam modes, natural frequencies of the cantilevered cylinder are compared with those of the cantilevered beam. And it was found out that shear modulus must be used correctly to convert the shell model to the equivalent beam model. From the dynamic characteristics of the beam model, it was found out that natural frequencies are proportional to the length of Reactor Core & Core Shroud and inversely proportional to the mass. From the comparison with the dynamic characteristics of a beam model and a lumped-mass model it was found out that the size of lumped-mass must be determined considering both the length and the mass of Reactor Core & Core Shroud.

  • The current theories on the interaction between surrounding rock and support in deep-buried tunnels do not consider the form of pre-reinforcement support or the flexibility of primary support, leading to a discrepancy between theoretical solutions and practical applications. To address this gap, a comprehensive mechanical model of the tunnel with pre-reinforced rock was established in this study. The equations for internal stress, displacement, and the radius of the plastic zone in the surrounding rock were derived. By understanding the interaction mechanism between flexible support and surrounding rock, the three-dimensional construction analysis solution of the tunnel could be corrected. The validity of the proposed model was verified through numerical simulations. The results indicate that the reduction of pre-deformation significantly influences the final support pressure. The pre-reinforcement support zone primarily inhibits pre-deformation, thereby reducing the support pressure. The support pressure mainly affects the accelerated and uniform movement stage of the surrounding rock. The generation of support pressure is linked to the deformation of the surrounding rock during the accelerated movement stage. Furthermore, the strength of the pre-reinforcement zone of the surrounding rock and the strength of the shotcrete have opposite effects on the support pressure. The parameters of the pre-reinforcement zones and support materials can be optimized to achieve a balance between surrounding rock deformation, support pressure, cost, and safety. Overall, this study provides valuable insights for predicting the deformation of surrounding rock and support pressure during the dynamic construction of deep-buried weak rock tunnels. These findings can guide engineers in improving the construction process, ensuring better safety and cost-effectiveness.

  • Tubes in heat exchanger of fuel rods in reactor core are supported at intemediate point by support p0lates or springs. Current practice is, in case of heat exchanger, to allow clearance between tube and support plate for design and manufacturing consideration. And in case of fuel rod the clearance in support point can be generated due to the support spring force relaxation. Flow-induced vibration of a tube can cause it to impact or rub against support plate or against adjacent tubes and can result in fretting-wear. The tube-to- support dynamic interaction is used to relate experimental wear data from single-span test rigs to real multi-span heat exchanger configurations. The dynamic interaction cna be measured during experimental wear tests. However, the dynamic interaction is difficult to measure in real heat exchangers and, therefore, analytical techniques are required to estimate this interaction. This paper describels the nonlinear impact model of DAGS(Dynamic Analysis of Gapped Structure) code which simulates the tube response to external sinusodial or step excitation and predicts tube motion and tube-to-support dynamic interaction. Three experimental measurements-two single span rods excited by sinusodial force and a two span rod impacted by a steel ball are compared from the simulation nonlinear model of DAGS code. The simulation results from DAGS code are in good agreement with measurements. Therefore, the developed model of DAGS code is good analytical tool for estimating tube-to-support dynamic interaction in real heat exchangers.
