  • In this paper, we propose a dual-mode blind equalization algorithm that two of the blind equalization algorithm using the size of the decision-directed error signal is automatically switched. The proposed algorithm has a faster convergence speed due to operation of the MSAGF-SMMA with large fixed step-size mainly in the initial equalization. After the equalization has been made to some extent, the proposed algorithm has a smaller residual error in the steady- state by operation of the MSAGF-SMMA with a variable step-size mainly. The variable step-size is determined by multiplying the size of the decision-directed error signal of a fixed step-size. In this paper, we analyze the performance of the proposed algorithm. The computer simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has a significantly improved performance in terms of a residual inter-symbol interference and residual error in the steady-state compared with the MMA, SMMA, and MSAGF-SMMA.

  • Pfair scheduling algorithm, which is an optimal scheduling algorithm in the hard real-time multiprocessor environments, is based on the fixed quantum size. Recently, several methods that determine the maximum quantum size dynamically were proposed in the mode change environments. But these methods considered the case in which the period of a task can only be decreased. In this paper, we consider the case in which the period of a task can be decreased or increased, and propose an improved method that determine the maximum quantum size dynamically in the mode change environments. A simulation shows that the proposed method is effective.

  • A methodology to nondestructively locate and estimate size of damage in beam-type structures using a few natural frequencies or a few mode shapes is presented. A damage-localization algorithm to locate damage from changes in natural frequencies and a damage-sizing algorithm to estimate crack-size from natural frequency perturbation are outlined. A damage index algorithm to localize and estimate severity of damage from monitoring changes in mode shapes is outlined. The frequency-based method and the mode-shape-based method are evaluated for several damage scenarios by locating and sizing damage in PS concrete beams lot which a few natural frequencies and mode shapes are generated from finite element models. The result of the analyses indicates that the two methods correctly localize and closely estimate the size of the crack simulated in the test beam.

  • Chemical Mechanical Polishing (CMP) is referred to as a three body tribological system, because it includes two solids in relative motion and the CMP slurry. On the assumption that the abrasives between the pad and the wafer could be a major reason not only for the friction force but also for material removal during polishing, the friction force generated during CMP process was investigated with the change of abrasive size and concentration of CMP slurry. The threshold point of average coefficient of friction (COF) with increase in abrasives concentration during interlayer dielectric (ILD) CMP was found experimentally and verified mathematically based on contact mechanics. The predictable models, Mode I (wafer is in contact with abrasives and pad) and Mode II (wafer is in contact with abrasives only), were proposed and used to explain the threshold point. The average COF value increased in the low abrasives concentration region which might be explained by Mode I. In contrast the average COF value decreased at high abrasives concentration which might be regarded to as Mode II. The threshold point observed seemed to be due to the transition from Mode I to Mode II. The tendency of threshold point with the variation of abrasive size was studied. The increase of particle radius could cause contact status to reach transition area faster. The correlation between COF and material removal rate was also investigated from the tribological and energetic point of view. Due to the energy loss by vibration of polishing equipment, COF value is not proportional to the material removal rate in this experiment.

  • An investigation has been made on the relationship between characteristics of torsional mode signal in MsS and SH mode signal in BEM modeling for the defect of stainless steel pipe. In order to compare torsional mode signal with SH mode signal of defect in stainless steel pipe, specimens were made by changing size of depth and width along to circumferential direction 360 degrees. All the defects was detected by torsional mode signal of MsS, especially according to the change of depth size, amplitude of signal was changed. But width change for the circumferential defects has no certain tendency. SH mode signal of BEM modeling shows similar results with torsional mode, with change makes amplitude variation of signal. In this paper, the characteristics of torsional mode and SH mode signals were found. It is possible to predict the circumferential defects for the pipe by SH mode modeling.

  • In this paper, we propose an algorithm of angular mode selection for high-performance HEVC intra prediction. HEVC intra prediction is used to remove the spatial redundancy. Intra prediction has a total of 35 modes and block size of $64{\times}64$ to $4{\times}4$. Intra prediction has a high amount of calculation and operational time due to performing all 35 modes for each block size for the best cost. The angular mode algorithm proposed has a simple difference between pixels of the original image and the selected angular mode. A decision is made to select one angular mode plus planar mode and DC mode to perform the intra prediction and determine the mode with the best cost. In effect, only three modes are executed compared to the traditional 35 modes. Performance evaluation index used are BD-PSNR and BD-Bitrate. For the proposed algorithm, BD-PSNR results averagely increased by 0.035 and BD-Bitrate decreased by 0.623 relative to the HM-16.9 intra prediction. In addition, the encoding time is decreased by about 6.905%.

  • The effect of plastic deformation in an interfacial crack is considered. Yield zones are assumed to have the form of a strip along the interface. The crack is subjected to mode III loads at infinity and lies along the interface of two semi-infinite planes with different material properties. The size of the yield zones, the relation between the size of the yield zone and CTOD are obtained in a closed form solution. The J integral also can be obtained in a closed form Solution.

  • Objective: To compare the outcomes of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) using dual switching monopolar (DSM), switching bipolar (SB), and combined DSM + SB modes at two different interelectrode distances (25 and 20 mm) in an ex vivo study, which simulated ablation of a 2.5-cm virtual hepatic tumor. Materials and Methods: A total of 132 ablation zones were created (22 ablation zones for each protocol) using three separable clustered electrodes. The performances of the DSM, SB, and combined DSM + SB ablation modes were compared by evaluating the following parameters of the RFA zones at two interelectrode distances: shape (circularity), size (diameter and volume), peritumoral ablative margins, and percentages of the white zone at the midpoint of the two electrodes (ablative margin at midpoint, AMm) and in the electrode path (ablative margin at electrode path, AMe). Results: At both distances, circularity was the highest in the SB mode, followed by the DSM + SB mode, and was the lowest in the DSM mode. The circularity of the ablation zone showed a significant difference among the three energy groups (p < 0.001 and p = 0.002 for 25-mm and 20-mm, respectively). All size measurements, AMm, and AMe were the greatest in the DSM mode, followed by the DSM + SB mode, and the lowest were with the SB mode (all statistically significant). The white zone proportion in AMm and AMe were the greatest in the SB mode, followed by the DSM + SB mode and DSM in general. Conclusion: DSM and SB appear to be complementary in creating an ideal ablation zone. RFA with the SB mode can efficiently eradicate tumors and create a circular ablation zone, while DSM is required to create a sufficient ablative margin and a large ablation zone.

  • Aerosol mass size distributions were measured at Kosan, Cheju Island in April 1998 and their compositions were analyzed. Microorifice Uniform Deposit Impactor(MOUDI) was used to collect aerosols. Sulfate and ammonium ions were predominatly present at fine mode of the aerosols while nitrate, chloride, and metal ions were mostly at coarse mode. Based on the size distribution of nitrate, it is suggested that most nitrate were from gas to particle conversion on coarse particles. Non-sea salt(nss) fraction of sulfate accounted for more than 90% of total sulfate mass concentration. In general, ion concentrations in this study are lower than those measured at the same site from the previous studies. Ion balance and chloride ion levels indicates that there had been anthropogenic chloride emission sources near to the site during the measurements.

  • This paper proposed a novel compact bandpass filter with folded half mode substrate integrated waveguide (FHMSIW) cavities using two-layer printed circuit board(PCB) process. The area of the FHMSIW filter is reduced by nearly 50 % and 75 % compared with half mode substrate integrated waveguide(HMSIW) filter and substrate integrated waveguide(SIW) filter, respectively. A four-pole Chebyshev FHMSIW bandpass filter at C-band has been designed, simulated and fabricated. Measured results are presented and found to agree with the full-wave simulated results by using Ansoft HFSS. The filter shows good performance and compact size.
