  • Delamination of cover concrete due to re-bar corrosion is a critical damage reducing structural safety of reinforced concrete structures. Therefore, it should be detected and evaluated to provide appropriate maintenance to recover structural integrity. Impact-echo method, which utilizes thickness vibration characteristics of delaminated concrete section, is effective for detection and evaluation of small areal size delamination. However, it may not be applicable for large areal size delamination in which flexural vibration modes are dominated. In this study, applicability of vibration mode shapes of delaminated concrete section is investigated for visualization of delamination region in concrete structures. Numerical and experimental modal tests are performed to estimate mode shapes of delaminated concrete section and linear absolute summation technique is proposed for effective visualization of delamination region based on estimated mode shapes.

  • We have investigated the guided optical properties of a Ti:LiNbO$_3$optical waveguide which was fabricated by Ti-diffusion in an air atmosphere and proposed an effective polishing method of waveguide endfaces. Characteristics and Paleoceanographic Implications of Grain-size Distributions of Biogenic Components in Sediments from the South Korea Plateau (East Sea) (동해 남한국대지 퇴적물의 생물기원 성분 입도 분포의 특성과 고해양학적 의미)

  • This study details grain-size distributions (GSDs) of carbonate and biogenic opal fractions of the sediments retrieved from the South Korea Plateau in the East Sea and draws paleocanographic implications from them. The opal-fraction GSDs show fine modes of 10.3 ㎛ and coarse modes of 102.5 ㎛ on average. The fine-mode grains of opal fractions mainly consist of small diatoms and radiolarians including their broken frustules, while the coarse-mode grains are mostly comprised of large warm-water diatoms and radiolarians. Significant positive correlation between opal contents and abundances of the coarse-mode GSDs in the total GSDs suggests that the abundances of the coarse-mode GSDs were controlled by the increased surface productivity of warm-water diatoms during interglacial stages. The carbonate-fraction GSDs show fine modes of 2.4 ㎛ and coarse modes of 99.1 ㎛ on average. The fine-mode grains mainly consist of coccolithophores, while the coarse-mode grains are mostly comprised of intact or broken planktonic foraminifera. The abundances of coarse-mode and fine-mode GSDs were not correlated with carbonate contents, suggesting a complex control exerted by both the degree of carbonate dissolution and the productivity of coccolithophores on the carbonate-fraction GSDs.

  • Effects of reaction conditions such as power input and feeding time and feeding mode of reactants on the reaction crystallization of lanthanum oxalate in semi-batch reactor were investigated experimentally. Even though the crystal size distribution of lanthanum oxalate was always monomodal, its mean crystal size was significantly varied with the reaction conditions. As the power input and reactant feeding rate increased, the mean crystal size was reduced and the relative induction time was prolonged. The mean crystal size produced in oxalic acid feeding mode was smaller than that in lanthanum chloride feeding mode, but the trend of the relative induction time with the feeding mode was reverse to that of the mean crystal size. The crystal morphology of lanthanum oxalate, which was produced within the ranges of the reaction conditions in our experiment, was maintained as a needle shape.

  • In this paper, $3^{rd}$ overtone mode energy-trapped filter using modified $PbTiO_3$ system ceramics was manufactured to apply for intermediate frequency SMD-type filter with the variations of splitted electrode size. To investigate the effects of splitted electrode size on filter characteristics of $3^{rd}$ overtone mode energy-trapped filter, ceramic wafers were fabricated by etching splitted rectangular electrode size($b{\times}d$) of b=0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1mm, d=0.3, 0.4, 0.5mm, respectively. And then, SMD-type ceramic filter were fabricated with the size of $3.7{\times}3.1mm$.   • Total number of resonant modes in a microwave oven cavity may be maximized for a given frequency bandwidth to obtain more uniform power distribution by choosing proper size of the cavity. The total number of modes is calculated for a dielectrically loaded rectangular cavity and its size is suggested here for which the change in the number of modes is less sensitive to the change of dielectric layer thickness and its total number of modes is maximized in a given range of cavity sizes. A prove coupled rectangular cavity is constructed and the total existing modes are measured to see the change of modes depending on the dielectric layer thickness and the cavity size. Surface wave mode existing in the dielectric layer is confirmed by measuring Q and the input impedance of the cavity for this mode, which closely compares with the calculation.

  • Based on the multimode fiber taper, a mode size converter for effective optical beam coupling between laser and optical fiber or between the two different optical fibers has been proposed and demonstrated. The device has a multimode input end and a single mode output end. The influence of various parameters, including device structure and launching conditions, on the coupling efficiency has been theoretically analyzed. The theoretical results revealed that the gaussian beam can be coupled into a single mode fiber without considerable insertion loss. The proposed multimode fiber taper has been fabricated using heating and pulling equipment incorporating two micro-torches. Experimental results showed that an optical beam with $50\;{\mu}m$ of large beam size was effectively coupled into single mode fiber through the multimode fiber taper. The insertion loss of the device was 1.3 dB.

Evaluation of failure mode of tunnel-type anchorage for a suspension bridge via scaled model tests and image processing

  • In this study, the pull-out behavior of a tunnel-type anchorage for suspension bridges was investigated using experimental tests and image processing analyses. The study focused on evaluating the initial failure behavior and failure mode of the tunnel-type anchorage. In order to evaluate the failure mode of tunnel-type anchorage, a series of scaled model tests were conducted based on the prototype anchorage of the Ulsan Grand Bridge. In the model tests, the anchorage body and surrounding rocks were fabricated using a gypsum mixture. The pull-out behavior was investigated under plane strain conditions. The results of the model tests demonstrate that the tunnel-type anchorage underwent a wedge-shaped failure. In addition, the failure mode changed according to the differences in the physical properties of the surrounding rock and the anchorage body and the size of the anchor plate. The size of the anchor plate was found to be an important parameter that determines the failure mode. However, the difference in physical properties between the surrounding rock and the anchorage body did not affect its size. In addition, this study analyzed the initial failure behavior of the tunnel-type anchorage through image analysis and confirmed that the failure was sequentially transferred from the inside of the tunnel to the surrounding rock according to the image analysis. The reasonable failure mode for the design of the tunnel-type anchorage should be wedge-type rather than pull-out type.

  • A tapered ridge mode laser diode with increased spot size is designed and analyzed . The mode evolution concept is applied to design the taper and the method does not require regrowth or multiple-step etching technique. Three-dimensional BPM results show that the designed taper can transfer more than 97% of the mode power in the active region to the expanded mode.

  • In this paper, a BPF with a dual mode folded ring resonator is presented. The dual mode ring resonator is also exactly analyzed by using Y-parameter method, in which the difference in admittance of two lines make the ring resonator work as a dual mode resonator. The proposed BPF has an advantage of small size compared to conventional one with dual mode ring resonator.
