Background: The purpose of our study was to compare the dosimetric advantages of Flattening filter free (FFF) beams for trigeminal neuralgia patients using 4 mm conical collimators over previously treated patients with 6 MV SRS beam. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study was conducted for 5 TN patients who had been previously treated at our institution using frame-based, LINAC-based stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) on Novalis Tx using 6 MV SRS beam were replanned on 6X FFF beams on Edge Linear accelerator with same beam angles and dose constraints using 4 mm conical collimator. The total number of monitor units along with the beam on time was compared for both Edge and Novalis Tx by redelivering the plans in QA mode of LINAC to compare the delivery efficiency. Plan quality was evaluated by homogeneity index (HI) and Paddick gradient index (GI) for each plan. We also analyzed the doses to brainstem and organ at risks (OARs). Results and Discussion: A 28% beam-on time reduction was achieved using 6X FFF when compared with 6X SRS beam of Novalis Tx. A sharp dose fall off with gradient index value of $3.4{\pm}0.27$ for 4 mm Varian conical collimator while $4.17{\pm}0.20$ with BrainLab cone. Among the 5 patients treated with a 4 mm cone, average maximum brainstem dose was 10.24 Gy for Edge using 6X FFF and 14.28 Gy for Novalis Tx using 6X SRS beam. Conclusion: The use of FFF beams improves delivery efficiency and conical collimator reduces dose to OAR's for TN radiosurgery. Further investigation is warranted with larger sample patient data.
Emission control of acid exhaust gases from coal-fired power plants and waste incinerators has become an increasing concern of both industries and regulators. Among those gaseous emissions, SO$_{2}$ has been eliminated by a Spray Drying Absorber (SDA) system, where the exhaust gas is mixed with atomized limestone-water slurry droplets and then the chemical reaction of SO$_{2}$ with alkaline components of the liquid feed forms sulfates. Liquid atomization is necessary because it maximizes the reaction efficiency by increasing the total surface area of the alkaline components. An experimental study was performed with a laboratory scale SDA to investigate whether the scrubbing efficiency for SO$_{2}$ reduction increased or not with the application of a DC electric field to the limestone-water slurry. For a selected experimental condition SO$_{2}$ concentrations exited from the reactor were measured with various applied voltages and liquid flow rates. The applied voltage varied from -10 to 10 kV by 1 kV, and the volume flow rate of slurry was set to 15, 25, 35 ml/min which were within the range of emission mode. Consequently, the SO$_{2}$ scrubbing efficiency increased with increasing the applied voltage but was independent of the polarity of the applied voltage. For the electrical and flow conditions considered a theoretical study of estimating average size and charge of the atomized droplets was carried out based on the measured current-voltage characteristics. The droplet charge to mass ratio increased and the droplet diameter decreased as the strength of the applied voltage increased.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Abundant consumption of seaweeds in the diet is epidemiologically linked to the reduction in risk of developing cancer. In larger cases, however, identification of particular seaweeds that are accountable for these effects is still lacking, hindering the recognition of competent dietary-based chemo preventive approaches. The aim of this research was to establish the antiproliferative potency and angiosuppressive mode of action of Stoechospermum marginatum seaweed methanolic extract using various experimental models. MATERIALS/METHODS: Among the 15 seaweeds screened for antiproliferative activity against Ehrlich ascites tumor (EAT) cell line, Stoechospermum marginatum extract (SME) was found to be the most promising. Therefore, it was further investigated for its anti-proliferative activity in-vitro against choriocarcinoma (BeWo) and non-transformed Human embryonic kidney (HEK 293) cells, and for its anti-migratory/tube formation activity against HUVEC cells in-vitro. Subsequently, the angiosuppressive activity of S. marginatum was established by inhibition of angiogenesis in in-vivo (peritoneal angiogenesis and chorioallantoic membrane assay) and ex-vivo (rat cornea assay) models. RESULTS: Most brown seaweed extracts inhibited the proliferation of EAT cells, while green and red seaweed extracts were much less effective. According to the results, SME selectively inhibited proliferation of BeWo cells in-vitro in a dose-dependent manner, but had a lesser effect on HEK 293 cells. SME also suppressed the migration and tube formation of HUVEC cells in-vitro. In addition, SME was able to suppress VEGF-induced angiogenesis in the chorio allantoic membrane, rat cornea, and tumor induced angiogenesis in the peritoneum of EAT bearing mice. A decrease in the microvessel density count and CD31 antigen staining of treated mice peritoneum provided further evidence of its angiosuppressive activity. CONCLUSIONS: Altogether, the data underline that VEGF mediated angiogenesis is the target for the angiosuppressive action of SME and could potentially be useful in cancer prevention or treatment involving stimulated angiogenesis.
There are many regulation test methods to be related with engine emissions such as CVS-75, D-13, ECE-15 modes and so on. Most of these modes are consisted of lots of transient conditions that have rapid acceleration, deceleration and cranking modes. In this experimental research, the engine characteristics of cranking, accelerating and power output in a S.I. engine were studied to compare with neat gasoline and alternative fuels of M30 (methanol 30%, aromatic series 32%, non-aromatic 38%) and M50 (methanol 50%, aromatic 30%, non-aromatic 20%) for performance and exhaust emissions. The results show that reformulated methanol fuels are better emissions reduction of 15.7% over than that of neat gasoline fuel especially in HC and CO emissions at cranking mode. And the accelerating performances coincide with the results of distillation curve. CO concentration for M50 fuel is varied in a just little for the condition of slow acceleration. At wide-open throttle condition, brake specific energy consumption of reformulated fuels is increased and thermal efficiency is some what lower than that of gasoline fuel.
The present study was aimed at investigating the hypouricemic and xanthine oxidase inhibitory activities of the various fractions of the hydromethanolic extract of the leaves of Coccinia grandis L. Voigt (Cucurbitaceae). The leaves of this species was used in traditional medicinal system for the treatment of gout, rheumatism, jaundice, bronchitis, fever, skin eruptions, wounds, etc. The degree of xanthine oxidase inhibition was determined in vitro by measuring the increase in absorbance at 295 nm associated with uric acid formation. Among the fractions tested, the chloroform fraction exhibited highest potency ($IC_{50}$$17.8\;{\mu}g/ml$). This was followed by the pet-ether ($IC_{50}$$29.7\;{\mu}g/ml$), ethyl acetate ($IC_{50}$$41.2\;{\mu}g/ml$) and residual ($IC_{50}$$47\;{\mu}g/ml$) fractions. The $IC_{50}$ value of allopurinol was $6.1\;{\mu}g/ml$. In addition, the hypouricemic and hepatic xanthine oxidase (XO)/xanthine dehydrogenase (XDH) inhibitory activities of the fractions were examined in vivo using oxonate (280 mg/kg, i.p.) induced hyperuricemic mice. At a dose of 200 mg/kg orally for 7 days, the pet-ether, chloroform and ethyl acetate fractions produced a significant (P < 0.01) reduction in serum urate level and also inhibited hepatic XO/XDH activities when compared to hyperuricemic mice. These inhibitory effects were weaker than that observed for the standard drug, allopurinol (10 mg/kg, p.o.). Lineweaver-Burk analysis of the enzyme kinetics indicated that the mode of inhibition was of a mixed type. These results suggest that the use of Coccinia grandis leaves for the treatment of gout could be attributed to its XO inhibitory activity.
A design and control method of DC/DC converter, which can control variable DC-link voltage to drive a fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV), is proposed in this study. Given that a fuel cell has low-voltage and high-current characteristics, the required voltage for operating motor must be output through the DC/DC boost converter in the system to drive an FCEV. The proposed converter can choose the output voltage of battery or fuel cell in consideration of the driving mode, as well as control DC-link voltage in accordance with the back electromotive force. The switching lag-time to prevent shortage of pulse-width modulation inverter arms makes distorted current waveform caused by voltage distortion. Through this control method, the proposed converter can reduce the output voltage distortion and current ripple of the inverter, thereby reducing the distorted torque. Simulations and experimental results are presented to verify the reliability of the proposed DC/DC converter.
The various surface treated conditions of Fe-3.0%Ni-0.7%Cr-1.4%Mn-X steel such as as-received, ion nitriding, DLC coated, DLC coated after nitriding for 3 hrs and 6 hrs were investigated to evaluate the beneficial effect for plastic mold steel. Micro Vickers hardness tester was used to estimate nitriding depth from the hardness profile and to measure hardness on the surface. Elastic modulus and residual stress were measured by a nanoindentator. Scratch test and SP (small ball punch test) were utilized to assess the adhesive strength of DLC coating. The depth of nitriding layer was measured as $50{\mu}m$ for the condition of 3 hrs nitriding and $90{\mu}m$ for that of 6 hrs nitriding. Hardness, elastic modulus, residual stress of DLC coating were 20.37 GPa, 162.78 GPa and -1456 MPa respectively. Residual stress on the surface of DLC coating after nitriding could increase to -3914 MPa by introducing nitriding before DLC coating. During the 'Ball-On-Disc' test ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ particles pulled out from the surface of nitrized layer tend to enhance abrasive wear mode since the fraction of ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ (Fe4N) in ion-nitrized layer is known to increases with nitriding time. Thus the specific wear rate of the nitriding layer increased. Comparing with nitriding the specific wear rate in work piece disc as well as ball decreased prominently in DLC coating due to the remarkable reduction in friction coefficient.
Cutting performance and wear behavior were studied with the diamond micro-blade of Cu/Sn bond materials containing various amount of lubricant materials such as graphite and $MoS_2$. Measurement of instantaneous electric power consumption for cutting glass workpiece at the constant velocity was conducted and proposed as a method to assess cutting efficiency. The energy consumption of micro-blade for glass cutting decreased with the content of graphite and $MoS_2$ while wear amount of blade in volume increased with the amount of lubricant addition during the dicing test. It is because that hardness, flexural strength, and fracture toughness ($K_{IC}$) reduced with the amount of lubricant addition. Blades with $MoS_2$ additive showed higher mechanical properties than those with graphite additives when the same amount of the lubricant additive in wt.% was added. Due to the lower density of graphite than $MoS_2$, higher volume fraction of graphite could result in stronger effect on lowering electric power consumption by reducing the friction between blade and work piece however increasing wear rate due to the reduction in strength and fracture toughness. Adhesive wearing mode of micro blade could be remarkably improved by the addition of graphite as well as $MoS_2$.
Studies have been conducted using isolated surviving skin of Rana temporalia in an attempt to evaluate the effect of N-ethylmaleimide (NEM) on the epithelial $Na^+$ transport. Active transport of $Na^+$ across the skin was estimated by measuring short circuit current (SCC). NEM administered to the outside surface of the skin in concentration of $0.5{\times}10^{-4}-2.5{\times}10^{-4}M$ induced $20{\sim}40%$ increase during the first 30 mintues, followed by a gradual reduction in SCC. With NEM above $4{\times}10^{-4}M$, SCC was inhibited from the beginning. Qualitatively similar results were obtained when NEM was added to the inside bathing medium. However, the concentration of NEM for a similar effect was much higher with the drug in the inside bathing medium than in the outside bathing medium. The oxygen consumption of the skin was inhibited by NEM of above $10^{-4}M$, the effect being of approximately the same magnitude as that on SCC. The activity of $Na^+-K^+$ ATPase of the skin was not inhibited by NEM below $10^{-3}M$, but it was dramatically reduced with $1.2{\times}M$ NEM. The effects of NEM $(10^{-4}M)$ on the SCC and oxygen consumption could be eliminated by adding cysteine $(10^{-4}-10^{-3}M)$ in the medium, indicating that the SH group is involved in the action of NEM in the frog skin. On the basis of these results, the mode of action of NEM on the $Na^+$ transport across the frog skin was discussed.
