  • This paper is concerned with a protection system for the mentally handicapped, which is utilizing a GPS receiver and mobile communications. The protection system consists of a location notification equipment, a location identification and management server, and a cell phone of guardian. The location notification equipment is made up of a GPS receiver, a CDMA communication module and a microprocessor. The equipment transfers the location of the mentally impaired to the location identification and management server when the handicapped gets out of a certain bound of the designated facility. The server marks the handicapped's location on the map in the server and also notifies the guardian's cell phone of the locations. With applying the proposed protection system to social welfare organizations related to the mentally handicapped, it is expected to efficiently contribute to the promotion of the handicapped's welfare.

  • Location management is difficult in ad hoc networks due to many features such as the lack of a wired infrastructure, the scarce energy, memory and processing capabilities of nodes, and nodes’ movement which leads to a dynamic topology. These characteristics make the location management schemes designed for mobile cellular networks inefficient for ad hoc networks. New solutions for location management have therefore been proposed in the literature in the recent past. In this paper, a taxonomy of location management strategies is presented; some of the more interesting approaches proposed in the literature are critically discussed, highlighting their advantages and disadvantages.

  • Mobile IP [9] was introduced to help the mobile user to be contacted with a single IP address even though the point-of-access changes. However, mobile IP creates the so-called 'triangle routing' which makes the delays for data packets longer, as well as creating unnecessary traffic at the home network of the mobile user. To overcome this, Route Optimization (RO) for mobile IP [1] was proposed, which eliminated the triangle routing phenomenon. But [l] requires that the network protocol stack of all existing hosts to change. Privacy is also another matter to be considered. This paper introduces a scheme called Peer Agent scheme to implement RO for mobile IP without requiring existing hosts to change. Method to preserve location privacy while still enabling RO is also considered.

  • In previous papers [1] and [2], we proposed two improved methods protecting mobile users from active attacks[3,4] of network providers in mobile communication environment. But they were the case that mobile users were located in only home domain. In [5], we proposed protocol extending the method of [1] in case of roaming from the home domain to the remote domain. The purpose of this paper is to propose new mobile terminated protocol extending the method of [2] and analyze its security.

  • Location tracking is used to keep track of the location information of a mobile terminal in an idle state for a cail setup between mobile terminals. In this paper, we introduce a location update algorithm based on the call arrival history, which is appropriate for a variable call arrival rate over time. The location tracking strategy which uses the proposed algorithm can find changes in the call arrival rate by maintaining a call arrival history of a mobile terminal, from which a mobile terminal can calculate an appropriate timeout interval for a variable call arrival rate. We show that the proposed scheme is appropriate for a variable call arrival rate by presenting a simple analytical model and analytical results to investigate its performance for both a fixed and a variable call arrival rate.

  • Location service is usually provided by the GPS method using satellites. In the next generation mobile communication systems which use smart antennas, location service can be accomplished using direction of arrival (DOA) estimation techniques. In this paper, we propose a DOA estimation technique for the location service of the next generation mobile communication systems and investigate the validity of the proposed technique through computer simulation. First, DOA estimation problems of distributed sources are considered using vortical and horizontal array processors which are orthogonal to each other. The DOA of the elevation angle is estimated by the vertical array processor and then that of the azimuth angle is estimated by the horizontal array processor. Finally, the procedures of the location service for specific signal sources using three smart antennas are exhibited by computer simulation to show that the proposed DOA estimation technique can be used for the location service in the next generation mobile communication systems.

  • This paper is aimed at developing an location tracking system of mobile station based on currently available mobile communication network or mobile Phone and PCS(Personal Communication System). When the location tracking of mobile stations is in services, Emergency-119, all of crime investigation, effective urban traffic management and the safety protection of Alzheimer's patients can be available. In order to track the location of the mobile and base station, assumption in this paper is to use the statistic characteristics of LOS when modeling the standard noise in case that radio path is LNOS environment. The standard variation of the standard noise is $\pm150$. First, location is estimated by the positioning algorithms of TOA and TDOA and compared each other. Second, after canceling the standard noise by Kalman filter, location is estimated by the above two positioning algorithms. Finally, the location by the Kalman filter and two positioning algorithms is estimated by smoothing method. As a result, 2 dimensional average location error is imvoved by 51.2m in TOA and 34.8m in TDOA when Kalman filer and two positioning algorithms are used, compared with the two positioning algorithm used. And there is 3 more meter improvement after smoothing than Kalman filer and two positioning algorithms used.

  • In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview and classification on a wide range of the existing location management schemes which have been reported for wireless cellular networks and Mobile IP-based networks, respectively. In addition, from the various previous literature, we derive common key conceptual techniques, their main design goals and performance considerations on them, which can provide a useful guidance for understanding location management schemes regardless of network types. The aim of this paper is not to propose a new scheme for location management, but to highlight the various key design features involved in the design of the existing location management schemes, and to enhance an insight into the fundamental principles and techniques for designing more efficient and optimized location management scheme in future wireless mobile networks. We expect that regardless of network types, these underlying fundamental principles and conceptual techniques could be also easily tailored for more efficient mobility/QoS support in future mobile computing environments.

  • Together with the GPS-based approach, geolocation through mobile communication networks is a key technology for location-based service. Since the Mobile WiMAX system is considered as a candidate for fourth-generation mobile systems, it is important to investigate its location capability. The geolocation of Mobile WiMAX can be realized when the preamble symbols in the down-link channel are appropriately used for a TDOA (Time-Difference-of-Arrival) approach. However, the cellular structure of Mobile WiMAX inevitably generates co-channel interference, and it is difficult for the mobile terminal to acquire distance measurements from multiple base stations. Therefore, for geolocation via multilateration using the Mobile WiMAX network, it is very important to increase hearability. This paper proposes a geolocation method for Mobile WiMAX which employs interference cancellation and preamble signal overlapping for the enhancement of hearability. A novel interference cancellation strategy for complex-valued Mobile WiMAX signals is presented which has an iterative structure. Simulation results show that the proposed geolocation method provides the user's position with an accuracy of less than 20 m through the Mobile WiMAX cellular network if there is no multi-path or NLOS (None-Line-of-Sight).

  • The location estimation algorithm in the existing wireless network uses a base station to estimate the absolute location of three or more in the state where the terminal is fixed. However, this paper suggests a location recognition algorithm that uses a mobile terminal to estimate the location of a mobile base station using a traverse technique using a three-way estimation.
