The effects of Mn, Cr or Co addItion on the magnetic properties of Fe-Ni Invar alloys were investigated. The composition range of the three additives is up to 5wt%. In the temperature range of room temperature-$250^{\circ}C$, the variation of specific magnetization with the addition of Mn, Cr or Co in the Fe-Ni alloys except for 5wt% Co shows the phenomenon characteristics of the Invar effect, viz., the specific magnetization decreases very abrubtly with the temperature and the dependence of temperature on the specific magnetization is in the mixed form of $T^{3/2}$ and $T^{2}$. In the room temperature, the amount of increase in the specific magnetization, Curie temperature and coercivity is in order of Co > Cr > Mn. In the case of 5wt% Co an anomalous phenomena were observed due to the occurrance of ferromagnetic $\alpha$ phase which reduces the invar effect.
The effects of divalent cations, $Hg^{2+}, Cu^{2+}, Pb^{2+}, Cd^{2+}$, and $Mn^{2+}$ on the total ATPase activity of the fragmented sarcoplasmic reticulum isolated from rabbit skeletal muscle were investigated. The inhibitory effects of the cations on the enzyme activity increased as the concentrations of the ions increased with the order of efficiency of $Hg^{2+}$ > $Cu^{2+}$ > $Pb^{2+}$ > $Cd^{2+}$ > $Mn^{2+}$ in the concentration range between 10 and 500$\mu$M. The 50% inhibition for each ion was almost identical with the inhibition constant (Ki) value for each ion. The Ki's were 10, 30 130, and 350$\mu$M for $Hg^{2+}, Cu^{2+}, Pb^{2+}, and Cd^{2+}$, respectively. $Mn^{2+}$ seemed to be an activator at lower concentrations and an inhibitor at higher concentrations. The presence of the cations did not change the Km values, suggesting that the ions act as a reversible noncompetitive inhibitor on the FSR ATPase. The energy of activation of the enzyme was aproximately 19 Kcal/mole. The presence of the ions decreased the value slightly. A possible mechanism for the reversible noncompetitive inhibitory effect of the cations was discussed.
All accessions of Rehmannia glutinosa show the unique characteristic of intrinsic tolerance to paraquat. The higher level of endogenous superoxide dismutase(SOD) activity and its increase upon paraquat treatment indicated the involvement of SOD in the tolerance mechanism to paraquat in R. glutinosa. In this study, we examined the isoform-specific response of SOD to oxidative stresses and hormones. Six SOD isoforms were found in the leaf, and they were identified as two MnSODs(named MnSOD I and MnSOD II, in order of increasing mobility), one FeSOD and three Cu/ZnSODs(named Cu/ZnSOD I, Cu/ZnSOD II, and Cu/ZnSOD III, in order of increasing mobility). MnSOD I, MnSOD II, FeSOD, Cu/ZnSOD I, Cu/ZnSOD II, and Cu/ZnSOD III, contributed to 4, 11, 7, 15, 30, and 32% of the total SOD activity, respectively. Total SOD activity levels in the leaf were increased by 4, 24, and 21% by paraquat, salicylic acid(SA), and yeast extract(YE), respectively, but little by ethephon. Six SOD isoforms responded differentially to these stresses and hormones. The activities of all the isoforms were increased by YE and SA except that of MnSOD I which was decreased by SA. The activities of MnSOD I, FeSOD, and CuZnSOD I were increased by paraquat. These results suggest that amelioration of oxidative stresses by SOD is fine-tuned by the differential expression of isoforms in R. glutinosa.
The effect of aliovalent dopants, $ Nb_2O_5$ and MnO, on the phase stability of 12 mol% ceria partially-stabilized zirconia (Ce-TZP) polycrystals was studied. Both dopants (MnO and $ Nb_2O_5$) significantly increased the stability of the tetragonal zirconia phase (Mb temperature lower than liquid nitrogen temperature). The enhancement of the stability of the tetragonal phase in Ce-TZP doped with 1 mol% of Mno(Ce-TZP/MnO) andCe-TZP doped with 1 mol% of $ Nb_2O_5$(Ce-TZP/$ Nb_2O_5$) were explained by the significant reduction of the driving force, -${\Delta}$Gchem, for the tetragonal-to-mono-clinic phase transformation caused by the addition of MnO and $ Nb_2O_5$. The enhanced stability of the tetragonal phase in the Ce-TZP and Al2O3 composite (Ce-TZP/$Al_2O_3$) is believed to be caused by smaller grain size, moderate reduction in the chemical driving force and increase in the strain energy barrier to the transformation. Mechanical properties of the Ce-TZP and the Ce-TZP/$Al_2O_3$ with (i) the same grain size and (ii) the same Mb temperature were examined by measuring stress-strain behavior in 3 point bending. The Ce-TZP/$Al_2O_3$ composite doped with 1.3w% MnO (Ce-TZP/$Al_2O_3$/MnO), which had the same grain size as the Ce-TZP and De-TZP/$Al_2O_3$ showed more transformation plasticity than either the Ce-TZP or the Ce-TZP/$Al_2O_3$ composite. The Ce-TZP wihch had the same Mb temperature as that of the Ce-TZP/$Al_2O_3$/MnO did not show any transformation plasticity.
In recent years, supercapacitors have been developed rapidly as a rechargeable energy storage device. And the performance of supercapacitors is depending on electrode materials, the preparation method and performance of electrode materials have become the primary goal of scientific development. This study synthesizes Co3O4@MnO2@PPy cathode material with porous pattern core-shell structure by hydrothermal method and electrodeposition. The result samples are characterized by X-ray diffraction transmission/scanning electron microscope, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Electrochemical evaluation reveals that electrochemical performance is significantly enhanced by PPy depositing. The specific capacitance of Co3O4@MnO2@PPy is 977 F g-1 at 1 A g-1, the capacitance retention rate of 105%. Furthermore, the electrochemical performance of Co3O4@MnO2@PPy//AC asymmetric supercapacitor assembles with AC as the negative electrode material is significantly better than that of MnO2//AC and Co3O4@MnO2//AC. The capacity of Co3O4@MnO2@PPy//AC is 102.78 F g-1. The capacity retention rate is still 120% for 5000 charge-discharge cycles.
In order to investigate of the effects of rapid rotating shift work on physiological stress, the activities of urinary Na$^{+}$, $K^{+}$, Cl$^{[-10]}$ were measured in 14 rotational shift nurses, during day shifts(8AM-4PM, n=4), evening shifts(4PM-l2MN, n=5), and night shifts(12MN-8AM, n=5) in hospital twenty students attending nursing college a used as a control group. Urine specimens were collected in 30 minutes before and after work on the second day of shift work. In day shift nurses, Na$^{+}$ activity was 137mM at 8AM and increased to 206mM at 4PM, whereas $K^{+}$ activity was 42mM at 8AM and no significant change at 4PM. Cl$^{[-10]}$ activity was changed from 234mM to 344mM at 4PM at 8AM. In the evening shift, Na$^{+}$ activity was 117mM at 4PM and 140mM at 12MN, $K^{+}$ activity was 22mM and 32mM, respectively. Cl$^{[-10]}$ activity was 169mM and changed to 270mM. During the night shift, Na$^{+}$ activity was 128mM at 12MN and changed to 161mM at 8AM, $K^{+}$ activity was 42mM at 12MN and 8AM, and Cl$^{[-10]}$ activity was from 303mM and changed to 355mM. In general, the urinary ion activities seemed to increase after work, however there were no significant changes in ion activities except the Na$^{+}$ increase in day shift. The mean of the activities of $K^{+}$ and Cl$^{[-10]}$ before and after work during the day and night shift were significantly higher than those in control group (P<0.05). $K^{+}$ activities were also higher than that of evening shift(P<0.05). However, there was no difference in Na$^{+}$ activity among the control group and three shifts. There was a significant relationship among urinary Na$^{+}$, Cl$^{[-10]}$ and $K^{+}$ in the control group and rotating shift nurses except between Na$^{+}$ and $K^{+}$ in shift. The relationship between Na$^{+}$ and Cl$^{[-10]}$ was low in shift work and there was no significant relationship between Na$^{+}$ and $K^{+}$ in shift, suggesting that the active regulation $K^{+}$ and/or Na$^{+}$ in response to stress upon the shift work disruped the ratio of urinary Na$^{+}$ to $K^{+}$ and also lowered the relationship between $K^{+}$ and Cl$^{[-10]}$ . These results suggest that nurses working the day shift were overloaded and under stress, and the night shift interfered with the physiological rhythm of the nurses.red with the physiological rhythm of the nurses.

A stoichiometric mixture of evaporating materials for $MnAl_2S_4$ single crystal thin films was prepared from horizontal electric furnace. To obtain the single crystal thin films, $MnAl_2S_4$ mixed crystal was deposited on thoroughly etched semi-insulating GaAs(100) substrate by the Hot Wall Epitaxy (HWE) system. The source and substrate temperatures were $630^{\circ}C$ and $410^{\circ}C$, respectively. The crystalline structure of the single crystal thin films was investigated by the photoluminescence and double crystal X-ray diffraction (DCXD). The temperature dependence of the energy band gap of the $MnAl_2S_4$ obtained from the absorption spectra was well described by the Varshni's relation, $E_g(T)=3.7920eV-5.2729{\times}10^{-4}eV/K)T^2/(T+786 K)$. In order to explore the applicability as a photoconductive cell, we measured the sensitivity (${\gamma}$), the ratio of photocurrent to dark current (pc/dc), maximum allowable power dissipation (MAPD) and response time. The results indicated that the photoconductive characteristic were the best for the samples annealed in S vapour compare with in Mn, Al, air and vacuum vapour. Then we obtained the sensitivity of 0.93, the value of pc/dc of $1.10{\times}10^7$, the MAPD of 316 mW, and the rise and decay time of 14.8 ms and 12.1 ms, respectively.
The quantitative separations of a mixture containing equal amounts of each cation such as Mn(Ⅱ), Cr(Ⅲ), V(Ⅴ), Cu(Ⅱ), Ni(Ⅱ), Co(Ⅱ), and Fe(Ⅲ) are carried out by the elution through $35cm{\times}3.14cm^2$ column of cation exchange resin, $Dowex 50w{\times}12$. The eluents are a mixture of 0.6 M sodium chloride and 0.1 M sodium tartrate (pH = 2.00 and 4.50) for Fe(Ⅲ), V(Ⅴ), Cu(Ⅱ), Ni(Ⅱ) and Co(Ⅱ), and a mixture of 3 M sodium chloride and 0.1 M sodium tartrate (pH = 4.50) or a mixture of 0.7 M sodium chloride and 0.5 M sodium oxalate (pH = 4.50 and 5.00) for Mn(Ⅱ) and Cr(Ⅲ). The subsidiary cations in a standard iron mixture such as V(Ⅴ), Cu(Ⅱ), Ni(Ⅱ), Mn(Ⅱ) and Cr(Ⅲ) are separated together from the large amount of Fe(Ⅲ) through $15cm{\times}3.14cm^2$ column of the resin, $Dowex 1{\times}8$, by elution with the eluent of 4.0 M hydrochloric acid. A small amount of Fe(Ⅲ), however, is eluted together with Cu(Ⅱ). V(Ⅴ), Ni(Ⅱ), Mn(Ⅱ) and Cr(Ⅲ) eluted together are separated quantitatively through $10cm{\times}3.14cm^2$ column of the resin,$Dowex 50w{\times}12$. Cu (Ⅱ) and a small amount of Fe(Ⅲ) are separated quantitatively through $10cm{\times}3.14cm^2$ column of the resin, $Dowex 50w{\times}12$, by the elution with a mixture of 0.6 M sodium chloride and 0.1 M sodium tartrate (pH = 2.00 and 4.50) as an eluent. By the conditions obtained in the separations of the standard iron mixture, Fe(Ⅲ) and all of the subsidiary cations in steel are quantitatively separated.
Background: It is well known that oxygen free radicals(OFR) play a vital role in the various type of acute lung injury. Among various antioxidant defense mechanisms, the superoxide dismutases(SOD) are thought to be the first line of antioxidant defense by catalyzing the dismutation of two superoxide radicals to yield hydrogen peroxide and oxygen. Eukaryotic cells contain two types of intracellular SOD : cytosolic, dimeric copper/zinc- containing enzyme(CuZnSOD) and mitochondrial, tetrameric manganese-containing enzyme(MnSOD). The purpose of this study is to evaluate the time-dependent gene expression of MnSOD and CuZnSOD in the endotoxin-treated rats, and to compare with the manifestations of LPS-induced acute lung injury in rats. Methods: Total RNA from rat lung was isolated using single step phenol extraction 0, 1, 2, 4, 6, 12, 18, 24 hours after E. coli endotoxin injection(n=3, respectively). RNA was separated by formaldehyde-containing 1.2% agarose gels elctrophoresis, transblotted, baked, prehybridized, and hybridized with $^{32}P$-labeled cDNA probes for rat MnSOD and CuZnSOD, which were kindly donated by Dr. Ho(Duke University, Durham, NC, USA). The probes were labeled by nick translation. Blots were washed and autoradiography were quantitated using laser densitometry. Equivalent amounts of total RNA/gel were assessed by monitoring 28S and 18S rRNA. Results: Endotoxin caused a rise in steady-state MnSOD mRNA levels by 4h with peak mRNA accumulation by 6h. Continued MnSOD mRNA expression was observed at 12h. CuZnSOD mRNA expression was observed from 1h to 24h with peak levels by 18h. Conclusion: These results suggest that SOD palys an important defensive role in the endotoxin-induced acute lung injury in rats.
Alumina particles were grafted onto the surface of manganese oxide particles via the coprecipitation process using surfactant and cosurfactant. The phase of Mn/Al salts (Phase I) and the phase of precipitation agent (Phase II) were prepared in aqueous surfactant solution, separately. Phase II was added into Phase I and the reaction was performed to form the precursors of composites through hydrogen bonding between $Mn(OH)_2$ and $Al(OH)_3$ prepared by the reaction of Mn/Al salts with the precipitation agent. The alumina-grafted manganese oxide particles were obtained as a final product after calcination. The concentrations of Al salt and surfactant were varied to investigate their effects on the formation and the crystallinity of composites. In addition, the crystal structure of products could be controlled by changing the calcination temperature. Through thermal analyses, it was found that the thermal stability of manganese oxide was improved by the introduction of alumina on its surface.
