ZnO crystals with different morphologies were synthesized through a thermal evaporation of Zn-Mn mixtures in air. The morphology was dependant on the Mn content in Zn-Mn mixture. The morphology was changed from rod to tetrapod shape with decreasing Mn content in Zn-Mn mixture. The result indicates that the concentration of Mn might be responsible for the different morphologies of ZnO crystals. XRD spectra showed that the ZnO crystals had a hexagonal wurtzite crystal strutures. For all the samples, room temperature cathodoluminescence spectra showed a ultra-violet emission at 380 nm and a green emission at around 500 nm. However, the intensity ratio of ultra-violet emission to green emission was significantly different with the Mn content in the source material.
Effect of Fe and Mn contents on the castability of Al-9wt%Si-xMg-yFe-zMn alloy has been studied. The alloy was composed of ${\alpha}$-Al phase, Al+eutectic Si phase, ${\beta}$-Al5FeSi compound and chinese script ${\alpha}$-$Al_{15}(Mn,Fe)_3Si_2$ compound. ${\beta}$-$Al_5FeSi$ and ${\alpha}$-$Al_{15}(Mn,Fe)_3Si_2$ compounds assumed to effect the fluidity and shrinkage behaviors of the alloy during solidification due to the crystallization of ${\alpha}$-$Al_{15}(Fe,Mn)_3Si_2$ and ${\beta}$-$Al_5FeSi$ compounds above eutectic temperature. As Fe and Mn contents of Al-9wt%Si-0.3wt%Mg system alloy increased from 0.15wt% to 0.6wt% and from 0.3wt% to 0.7wt%, fluidity of the alloy decreased by 5.7% and 3.3%, respectively. And as Mg content of Al-9wt%Si-0.45wt%Fe-0.5wt%Mn system alloy increased from 0.3wt% to 0.4wt%, fluidity of the alloy decreased by 8.6%. When Fe content of the alloy increased from 0.15wt% to 0.6wt%, macro shrinkage ratio decreased from 6.1% to 4.1%, and micro shrinkage ratio increased from 0.04% to 0.24%. Similarly, Mn content of the alloy increased from 0.3wt% to 0.7wt%, macro shrinkage ratio decreased from 6.0% to 4.5% and micro shrinkage ratio increased from 0.12% to 0.18%. Judging from the castability of the alloy, Al-9wt%Si-0.3wt%Mg alloy with low content of Fe and Mn, 0.1wt% Fe and 0.3wt% Mn, is recommendable.
Effect of Fe and Mn contents on the castability of Al-4wt%Mg-0.9wt%Si system alloy has been studied. According to the analysis of cooling curve for Al-4wt%Mg-0.9wt%Si-0.3wt%Fe-0.3/0.5wt%Mn alloy, ${\alpha}-Al_{15}(Fe,Mn)_3Si_2$ and ${\beta}-Al_5FeSi$ phases crystallized above eutectic temperature of $Mg_2Si$. Therefore, these phases affected both the fluidity and shrinkage behaviors of the alloy during solidification. As Fe and Mn contents of Al-4wt%Mg-0.9wt%Si system alloy increased from 0.1 wt% to 0.4 wt% and from 0.3 wt% to 0.5 wt% respectively, the fluidity of the alloy decreased by 26% and 33%. When Fe content of the alloy increased from 0.1 wt% to 0.4 wt%, 23% decrease of macro shrinkage and 19% increase of micro shrinkage appeared. Similarly, Mn content of the alloy increased from 0.3 wt% to 0.5 wt%, 11% decrease of macro shrinkage and 14% increase of micro shrinkage appeared. Judging from the castability of the alloy, Al-4wt%Mg-0.9wt%Si alloy with low content of Fe and Mn, 0.1 wt% Fe and 0.3 wt% Mn, is recommendable.
Effect of Fe and Mn contents on the tensile properties of Al-4 wt%Mg-0.9 wt%Si alloy system has been studied. Common phases of Al-4 wt%Mg-0.9 wt%Si alloy system were ${\alpha}$-Al, $Mg_2Si$, ${\alpha}-Al_{12}(Fe,Mn)_3Si$ and ${\beta}-Al_5FeSi$. As Fe content of Al-4 wt%Mg-0.9 wt%Si alloy system increased from 0.15 wt% to above 0.3 wt%, ${\beta}-Al_5FeSi$ compound appeared. When Mn content of the alloy increased from 0.3 wt% to 0.5 wt%, morphology of plate shaped ${\beta}-Al_5FeSi$ compound changed to chinese script ${\alpha}-Al_{12}(Fe,Mn)_3Si$. As Fe content of Al-4 wt%Mg-0.9 wt%Si-0.3 wt%Mn alloy increased from 0.15 wt% to 0.4 wt%, tensile strength of the as-cast alloy decreased from 191 MPa to 183 MPa and, elongation of the alloy also decreased from 8.0% to 6.2%. Decrease of these properties can be explained as the formation of plate shape, ${\beta}-Al_5FeSi$ phase with low Mn/Fe ratio of the alloy. However, when Mn content of Al-4 wt%Mg-0.9 wt%Si-0.3 wt%Fe alloy increased from 0.3 wt% to 0.5 wt%, tensile strength of as-cast alloy increased from 181 MPa to 194 MPa and, elongation of the alloy increased from 6.8% to 7.0%. These improvements attribute to the morphology change from ${\beta}-Al_5FeSi$ phase to chinese script, ${\alpha}-Al_{15}(Fe,Mn)_3Si_2$ phase shape-modified from with high Mn/Fe ratio of the alloy.
The purpose of this research was to develop a low Ni austenitic cast iron through replacing Ni by Cu and Mn because they are cheaper than Ni. The effect of the Cu content (6-12 wt%) on the microstructure characteristics was investigated in Fe-3%C-16%(Ni+Cu+Mn) cast iron. Contrary to general effect of the Cu on cast iron, the result of the microstructure analysis indicated that bainite and cementite were formed in high Cu content (>8 wt%Cu). A crystallized Cu-solution (Cu-Mn) phase and MnS in the Cu-solution were formed. The quantity of those phases increased as the Cu content increased. Consequently, the high Cu content in the composition ratio (Ni+Cu+Mn=16%) caused the formation of Cu-Mn/MnS and those phases decreased the effect of Cu and Mn on austenite formation. For this reason, bainite and cementite were formed in high Cu content.
Purpose: There is an ongoing search for a stent material that produces a reduced susceptibility artifact. This study evaluated the effect of manganese (Mn) content on the MRI susceptibility artifact of ferrous-manganese (Fe-Mn) alloys, and investigated the correlation between MRI findings and measurements of Fe-Mn microstructure on X-ray diffraction (XRD). Materials and Methods: Fe-Mn binary alloys were prepared with Mn contents varying from 10% to 35% by weight (i.e., 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, 30%, and 35%; designated as Fe-10Mn, Fe-15Mn, Fe-20Mn, Fe-25Mn, Fe-30Mn, and Fe-35Mn, respectively), and their microstructure was evaluated using XRD. Three-dimensional spoiled gradient echo sequences of cylindrical specimens were obtained in parallel and perpendicular to the static magnetic field (B0). In addition, T1-weighted spin echo, T2-weighted fast spin echo, and $T2^*$weighted gradient echo images were obtained. The size of the low-intensity area on MRI was measured for each of the Fe-Mn binary alloys prepared. Results: Three phases of ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensite, ${\gamma}$-austenite, and ${\varepsilon}$-martensite were seen on XRD, and their composition changed from ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensite to ${\gamma}$-austenite and/or ${\varepsilon}$-martensite, with increasing Mn content. The Fe-10Mn and Fe-15Mn specimens comprised ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensite, the Fe-20Mn and Fe-25Mn specimens comprised ${\gamma}+{\varepsilon}$ phases, and the Fe-30Mn and Fe-35Mn specimens exhibited a single ${\gamma}$ phase. The size of the low-intensity areas of Fe-Mn on MRI decreased relative to its microstructure on XRD with increasing Mn content. Conclusion: Based on these findings, proper conditioning of the Mn content in Fe-Mn alloys will improve its visibility on MR angiography, and a Mn content of more than 25% is recommended to reduce the magnetic susceptibility artifacts on MRI. A reduced artifact of Fe-Mn alloys on MRI is closely related to the paramagnetic constitution of ${\gamma}$-austenite and/or ${\varepsilon}$-martensite.
The effects of $SiO_2$ and MnO addition on the sinterability and the electrical properties of 0.4mol% Nb-doped SrTiO3 varistor were investigated. The $SiO_2$ content was fixed at 0.3mol% and the MnO content varied from 0 to 1.0mol%. With 0.3 mol% $SiO_2$ and 0.3 mol% MnO addition, optimum density was obtained by sintering at $1200^{\circ}C$ without excess liquid phase. Impedance spectroscopy was performed on the sintered specimens with 0.3 mol% $SiO_2$ and various MnO contents. It was found that the resistivities of grains was increased with increasing MnO content. The dielectric constant was measured to be above 50000 in the specimen with 0.3~1.0mol% Mn content. The non-linear coefficient increased substantially with MnO addition, and it varied from 1 to 9 depending on the MnO content.
The current efficiency and the composition of Zn-Cr and Zn-Cr-X (X : Co, Mn) alloy electrodeposits were investigated by using chloride bath with EDTA auditive and flow cell plating system. The current efficiency of Zn-Cr alloy decreased with increasing current density, while it increased with the content of Co and Mn of the Zn-Cr-X alloy bath in high current density region. The Cr content in Zn-Cr alloy increased from 1.4-2.7 to $28wt\%$ with increasing current density and the phase structure of the alloys changed from $\eta-Zn$ through $\eta-Zn+\gamma'-ZnCr\;to\;\gamma'-ZnCr$ with Increasing Cr content of the alloys. The Co content in Zn-Cr-Co alloys increased with Co content of the bath, while Cr content of the alloy increased or decreased in low current density region $(10-75A/dm^2)$ or high current density region $(75-100A/dm^2)$, respectively. $\gamma-ZnCo$ phase was formed in the Zn-Cr-Co alloy with above $9.0wt\%$ Co. The content of Mn and Cr in Zn-Cr-Mn alloys increased or decreased with the increase of current density in high current density region, respectively while Cr content of the alloy decreased noticeably with the increase of Mn content in the bath. Two phases of $\delta_1-ZnMn$ and $\gamma'-ZnCr$ were formed in the Zn-Cr-Mn alloy with above $8.6wt\%$ Mn.
Perovskite PMN-PZT-based ceramics were prepared and the$ MnO_2$ doping effects on their piezoelectric properties were investigated. Grain size decreased with increasing the $MnO_2$ content, and the pyrochlore phase was not identified in the sintered PMN-PZT ceramics with 0.01~1.0wt% $MnO_2$. Piezoelectric voltage and charge constants were reduced and mechanical quality factor increased with increasing the $MnO_2$ content. However, electromechanical coupling coefficient slightly decreased with increasing the MnO$_2$ content without regard to the grain size.
