  • The backlayer phenomena of smoke in the road tunnel is evaluated through numerical experiments. A commercial code, PHOENICS is used to simulate smoke flow in the road tunnel. The independent and dependent variables are ventilation air velocity and the length of backlayer of smoke respectively. Hybrid scheme and $textsc{k}-\varepsilon$ turbulence model is adopted in the simulation process and mass residual is used as a convergence criterion. The experimental results say that the length of backlayer is reduced linearly with the increase of ventilating air velocity and that there is a critical air velocity which prevents from the onset of backlayering phenomena. One finds that there is a fresh air region near the bottom of tunnel which could make the passenger escape from the region polluted by smoke. These phenomena come from the severe vertical stratification of the smoke air mixture in the tunnel.

  • The Yellow-Sand phenomena occurred during the period from l0C to 14C in Korea have been investigated using the historical record of the Koryosa. It is written as the "dust rain"or "mud" which means the falling down of dust from the sky. The authors have extracted 50 historical writings of dust rain from the Koryosa. The results show that the observation records concerning Yellow-Sand phenomenon for the period of Korea Dynasty (918~1392) are described with the scientific accuracy for the Yellow-Sand phenomena as the pure dust phenomena, the mixture of Yellow Sand with snow or rain, and the Yellow-Sand associated with fog or hail, etc. It is also found that the occurrence of Yellow-Sand phenomena was the incomprehensible natural phenomena such as Yellow-Sand were interpreted as a warning from the Heaven to the king and people of their fail in moral principles.in moral principles.

  • Sodium-cooled fast breeder reactors use liquid sodium as a moderator and coolant to transfer heat from the reactor core. The main hazard associated with sodium is its rapid reaction with water. Sodium-water reaction (SWR) takes place when water or vapor leak into the sodium side through a crack on a heat-transfer tube in a steam generator. If the SWR continues for some time, the SWR will damage the surface of the defective area, causing it to enlarge. This self-enlargement of the crack is called "self-wastage phenomena." A stepwise numerical evaluation model of the self-wastage phenomena was devised using a computational code of multicomponent multiphase flow involving a sodium-water chemical reaction: sodiumwater reaction analysis physics of interdisciplinary multiphase flow (SERAPHIM). The temperature of gas mixture and the concentration of NaOH at the surface of the tube wall are obtained by a numerical calculation using SERAPHIM. Averaged thermophysical properties are used to assess the local wastage depth at the tube surface. By reflecting the wastage depth to the computational grid, the self-wastage phenomena are evaluated. A two-dimensional benchmark analysis of an SWAT (Sodium-Water reAction Test rig) experiment is carried out to evaluate the feasibility of the numerical model. Numerical results show that the geometry and scale of enlarged cracks show good agreement with the experimental result. Enlarged cracks appear to taper inward to a significantly smaller opening on the inside of the tube wall. The enlarged outer diameter of the crack is 4.72 mm, which shows good agreement with the experimental data (4.96 mm).

  • Hydrogen is usually produced by using syngas generated by the fuel reforming for natural gas so far. The further process is needed for increasing the hydrogen yield of syngas. However, the process for upgrading the hydrogen yield is accompanied by additional energy sources and economic costs. Thus related studies on the method for using as a mixture in itself have been conducted in order to utilize more efficiently syngas. The effect on the engine performance for methane/syngas mixture of 30kW spark ignition gas engine for power generation has been investigated in this study. As a result, it was found that the combustion phenomena such as the maximum in-cylinder pressure and crank angle at that time have been improved by methane/syngas mixture. Through these, fuel conversion efficiency could be enhanced by about 98% of methane/hydrogen mixture and $NO_x$ emissions could be reduced by about 12% of methane-hydrogen mixture.

  • This paper proposes a numerical modeling approach to simulate the hybrid combustion phenomena. From the physical understandings of hybrid combustion, the computational domain was separated into three regions: the solid fuel, gas phase reactive flow, and the interface between solid and fluid. Moreover, for the accurate calculation, computational grids for these regions was generated at every time step considering the instantaneous moving interface which are governed by the balance equations using thermal pyrolysis. In the domain of reactive flow, by virtue of diffusion flame structure, turbulent combustion modeling was introduced using either mixture fraction approach or mean reaction rate approach.

  • Recently, it has been found that trifluoroiodomethane ( $CF_3I$) gas can replace $SF_6$ gas as a prospective substitute gas. For quantitative understanding of gas discharge phenomena, we should know electron collision cross sections and electron transport coefficients. Using electron collision cross sections of $CF_3I$ and Xe, we calculated elecron drift velocity, longitudinal coefficient, effective ionization coefficient in $CF_3I$-Xe mixtures using a two-term approximation of the Boltzmann equation. We also compared the electron transport coefficients in pure gas and those of 10%, 20%, 50%, and 70% $CF_3I$-Xe mixture gases. The present data may be showed appropriate ratios of $CF_3I$-Xe mixture gas for replacing the $SF_6$ gas.

  • Hydrogen separation from multi-component mixture gases by the four-bed PSA process was studied experimentally and theoretically using layered bed of activated carbon and zeolited 5A. Effects of the adsorption time, the linear velocity on the process performance were investigated. The adsorption time and linear velocity affected the purity and recovery of the product $H_2$ purity is increases according as the adsorption time and linear velocity decrease; however, $H_2$ recovery shows an opposite phenomena to the purity. PSA process simulation studied to find optimum operation condition. In the results, 50sec adsorption time, 3cm/s linear velocity might be optimal values to obtain more than 99.999% purity and 65% recovery hydrogen.

  • A two-dimensional fluid simulation code has been developed in order to investigate discharge phenomena and to improve plasma luminous efficiency in a Hg flat fluorescent lamp (FFL) for an LCD backlight unit. In this study, the method of a two-dimensional fluid simulation for FFL is explained and the simulation results of Hg-Ar-Ne mixture gas are presented for the enhancement of the luminance efficiency. The effects of various parameters, such as driving voltage, frequency, and gas mixture ratio, are investigated. The luminance efficiency increased with increasing fraction of mercury but the increasing fraction of argon did not affect the efficiency much.

  • The peculiarities of using Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis (SHS) and solid state phase synthesis for production of high temperature superconductor materials are discussed. Oxide superconductors with general formula $ReBa_2$$Cu_3$$O_{7-x}$ (Re= Y, Yb, Sm, Nd) have been made with using barium oxide initial powder instead of traditional barium carbonate. X-ray powder diffraction showed a single phase orthorhombic perovskite structure was produced in all reactions. Phenomena observed during the grinding of the reactant mixture are presented. Mechano-chemical activation - as a pretreatment of the reactant mixture - strongly influences the kinetic parameters, the reaction mechanism, and the composition and structure of the final product.

  • Recently, mixture insulating oils is widely used in respect that the physical and the electrical properties is more excellentthan mineral oils, such as alkylbenzene oils and silicone oils, and that cost is lower than alkylbenzene oils or silicone oils. Also, it is important to research for the additive BTA(Benzotriazole) as a study for the phenomena of streaming electrification of mineral oils. So, mixture insulating oils class 7-2, is selected as a specimen in this experiments, and the contents of BTA in specimen are 0.2[ppm], 10[ppm] and 30[ppm], respectively. Then, the physical and the electrical properties for each specimen is made researches.
