To improve surface wettability, each sample was treated by atmospheric pressure plasma (APP) using dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) system. Argon and oxygen gases were used for treatment gas to modify the $TiO_2$ surface by APP with RF power range from 50 to 200 W. Water contact angle was decreased from $20^{\circ}$ to $10^{\circ}$ with argon only. However, water contact angle was decreased from $20^{\circ}$ to < $1^{\circ}$ with mixture of argon and oxygen. Water contact angle with $O_2$ plasma was lower than water contact angle with Ar plasma at the same RF power. It seems to be increasing the polar force of $TiO_2$ surface. Also, analysis result of X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) shows the increase of intensity of O1s shoulder peak, resulting in increasing of surface wettability by APP. Moreover, each water contact angle increased according to increase past time. However, contact angle increase with plasma treatment was lower than without plasma treatment. Additionally, the efficiency of $TiO_2$ photocatalyst was improved by plasma surface-treatment through the degradation experiment of phenol.
we have demonstrated structural evolution and optical properties of Si-nanowires (NWs) synthesized on Si (111) substrates with nanoscale Au-Si islands by rapid thermal chemical vapor deposition (RTCVD). The Au-Si nano-islands (10-50nm in diameter) were employed as a liquid-droplet catalysis to grow Si-NWs via vapor-liquid-solid mechanism. The Si-NWs were grown by a mixture gas of SiH4 and H2 at a pressure of 1.0 Torr and temperatures of $500{\sim}600^{\circ}C$. Scanning electron microscopy measurements showed that the Si-NWs are uniformly sized and vertically well-aligned along <111> direction on Si (111) surfaces. The resulting NWs are ${\sim}60nm$ in average diameter and ${\sim}5um$ in average length. High resolution transmission microscopy measurements indicated that the NWs are single crystals covered with amorphous SiOx layers of ${\sim}3nm$ thickness. In addition, the optical properties of the NWs were investigated by micro-Raman spectroscopy. The downshift and asymmetric broadening of the Si main optical phonon peak were observed in Raman spectra of Si-NWs, which indicates a minute stress effects on Raman spectra due to a slight lattice distortion led by lattice expansion of Si-NW structures.

In these days, many countries carry out many renewable energy policies to increase the renewable energy portion and to reduce the GHG(Green House Gas). In Korea, RPS(Renewable Portfolio Standards) focused on over 500MW power producers is conducting. And they are using the bio-fuel oil to meet their RPS quota. The oil is a mixture of animal and vegetable fat or fatty acid ester of them and should satisfy some specifications to use the power generation such as viscosity, pour point, acid number. Depends on the raw materials, quality characteristics of power bio-fuel oil are changed. By adding the power bio-fuel oil, pour point, density, sulfur content and viscosity are decreased and acid number, iodine number, oxygen content are increased. In this study, we test the quality characteristic of power bio-fuel oil and the property changes by the blending ratio of power bio-fuel oil & conventional fuel oil.
Filters were evaluated to use in the collection of ammonia and ammonium salts in the atmosphere. Ammonia from standard gas generator was collected on a glass fiber filter impregnated with a mixture of 3% boric acid and 25% glycerin. The collection efficiency by the impregnated filter was 96.4${\pm}$2.15% in pH control method and 97.4${\pm}$1.06% in the atmosphere for five measurements, respectively. Adsorption and desorption of gaseous ammonia were compared using three commercially available filters; glass fiber, quartz fiber and polycarbonate filters. Both glass and quartz fiber filters indicated some loss of ammonium salts and adsorption of ammonia, respectively. However, polycarbonate filter was found to be satisfactory for the collection of ammonium salts in the atmosphere. The minimum measurable concentration of ammonia was 0.83ppb (ca. 0.63${\mu}g$/$m^3$) by spectrophotometry of the indophenol method for the sample collected by 47mm${\phi}$ filter(20l/min, 60min). The sensitivity of the present method is about 20 folds higher than that of conventional method of bubbler collection followed by spectrophotometry, so that this method makes it possible to measure thevariation of ammoniacal concentrations in the atmosphere for a short time period of about 60 min.

Nitroarenes are ubiquitous environmental pollutants displaying potent mutagenicity in bacteria and carcinogenicity in mammal. In this study, the concentration of nitroarenes in coarse and fine particles and mutagenicity of POC$\_$N/ fraction was investigated in suspended particulates at the Shinchon and Bulkwang area of Seoul. The suspended particulates were collected bimonthly by a high volume cascade impactor air sampler from July 1987 to May 1988. Extractable organic matter was obtained by ultrasonic extraction on diethly ether/cyclohexane (8/2, v/v). Neutral fraction was obtained by liquid-liquid extraction. Polar neutral organic compounds (POC$\_$N/) was fractionated by thin-layer chromatography. Finally, the concentrations of nitroarenes in POC$\_$N/ fraction were measured and determined by capillary gas chromatography. Direct and indirect mutagenicity of POC$\_$N/ fraction were measured using Salmonella typhimurium TA 98. The result were as follows: 1) Major nitroarenes at the Shinchon area was 1-nitropyrene and at the Bulkwang area it was 2,7-dinitro-9-fluorenone during the year. 2) Average concentration of total nitroarenes measured was 67.26 ng/m$^3$in fine particles which was 1,3 folds higher that in coarse particle (52.30 ng/m$^3$). 3) Annual pattern of nitroarenes concentrations revealed that concentration during heating season (Feb., Jan., Mar.) was 2.2 folds higher than that in non heating season (May, Jul., Sep.). Concentration of each season has 157.68 ng/m$^3$and 80.39 ng/m$^3$. 4) The mutagenic activity of POC$\_$N/ fraction from fine particles was higher compared to that of coarse particles and was increased when metabolically activated, with 59 mixture. Mutagenicities, Metabolically activated, were significantly different between Shinchon and Bulkwang area, 322.8 rev/250 $\mu\textrm{g}$/plate and 286.8 rev/250 $\mu\textrm{g}$/plate, respectively. 5) Annual pattern of mutagenicity of POC$\_$N/ fraction revealed that mutagenicity during the heating season was 1.7 folds higher at Shinchon area and 1.2 folds higher at Bulkwang than during the non heating season. The variable contents and levels of nitroarenes in suspended particulates may affect human health significantly. Further studies such as risk assessment should be conducted on the basis of these kind of studies.
In this study, we consider gas generation characteristics on pyrolysis of eco-fuel which were made by mixing of Pitch Pine and Lauan sawdust as biomass and polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene as municipal plastic wastes with catalyst in fixed bed reactor. From the result of higher heating value(HHV) measurement and of ultimate analysis, the heating value of plastic wastes and a hydrogen content in plastic sample are higher than biomass. An activation energy was reduced by a catalyst addition. However the catalyst content influence over 5 wt% was insignificant. The yield of hydrogen from gasification of biomass containing plastic wastes such as polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene were obtained higher than that of sole biomass. The high temperature and mixture ratio of catalyst conditions induced to high hydrogen yield in most of the samples. As the influence of catalyst, the hydrogen yield by catalytic reaction was higher than non-catalytic reaction. We confirmed that Ni-$ZrO_2$ catalyst is more active in increasing the hydrogen yield in comparison with that of carbonate catalyst. The maximum hydrogen yield was 65.9 vol.%(Pitch Pine / polypropylene / 20 wt.% Ni-$ZrO_2$(1:9) at $900^{\circ}C$).
Yeast can be post-contaminated by the equipment, producer, or air, and this can degrade yogurt quality. This study aimed to demonstrate the yeast inhibiting effect in fermented milk by adding Lactobacillus paracasei and Lactobacillus rhamnosus along with current fermenting lactic acid bacteria such as Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus. A certain amount of yeast was added to fermented milk samples that were soon after stored at variable temperatures, and the number of yeast cells was counted periodically. The swelling phenomenon caused by the gas produced by the yeast in fermented products was also observed. In the two experiments, compared to the control, the L. paracasei- and L. rhamnosus-added-groups showed much slower rate of yeast appearance and lower frequency of swelling phenomena. This suggests that using a mixture of L. paracasei and L. rhamnosus in fermented milk inhibits the growth of yeast. Furthermore, if the products are stored at $10^{\circ}C$, post-acidification is rarely seen in the experimental group compared to the control group. This means that the organoleptic flavor can be kept consistent from the production day till the expiration day, resulting in improved organoleptic quality for customers. In other words, the use of L. paracasei and L. rhamnosus in fermented milk will result in the following positive effects: improvement in storage stability by delaying yeast appearance, increase in quality consistency by inhibiting post-acidification, and improved organoleptic quality by enhancing texture and flavor.
The effects of lactic acid bacteria on the chemical and microbial changes of fermented kimchi at various temperatures were studied. Kimchi was homogenized and was sterilized by ultra violet, then Lactobacillus plantarum, Leuconostoc mesenteroides, Pediococcus acidilactici, Lactobacillus brevis and the mixture of there bacteria inoculated on sterilized kimchi, respectively. The measurement of pH and total acidity, quantitative analysis of volatile organic acids and nonvolatile organic acids by gas chromatography were investigated while inoculated kimchi were fermented at $30^{\circ}C$, $21^{\circ}C$, $14^{\circ}C$ and $7^{\circ}C$. Sample I (original kimchi homogenate), Sample III (inoculated with Leuconostoc mesenteroides) and Sample Ⅵ (inoculated with mixed lactic acid bacteria) were alike in that changes of pH and total acidity and especially, these phenomena were prominent at $14^{\circ}C$. Formic, acetic and heptenoic acid as volatile organic acid were detected by GC, and these acids formed mainly by Leuconostoc mesenteroides and lactobacillus brevis. Sample III was more higher content than other samples at $14^{\circ}C$. As nonvolatile organic acid, lactic acid in all samples, citric acid in sample III at $21^{\circ}C$and $14^{\circ}C$, succinic acid in sample I at $30^{\circ}C$, $21^{\circ}C$, $14^{\circ}C$ and sample V at $30^{\circ}C$ were detected by GC.
The substances of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated feom Kimchi and Tarak, L. mesenteriodes LAB kw5, and S. thermophilus LAB KW15 were investigated for growth effect of Helicobacter pylori with IgY and Auricularia auricula. Inhibition of H. pylori was confirmed at LAB KW5 and KW15 supernatants. Interestingly, anti-H. pylori substance in LAB KW5 and KW15 supernatants were sensitive to lipase, but insensitive to protein hydrolase and carbohydrate hydrolase. The inhibition zone toward H. pylori was not shown with the lipase-treated supernatants. Therefore, there seemed to be lipid-like substances in the cultures. By the analyses with gas chromatography, undecanoic acid ($C_{11:0}$), palmitic acid ($C_{16:0}$), stearic acid ($C_{18:0}$), and oleic acid ($C_{18:1}$) were detected at the culture substances from L. mesenteroides LAB KW5 and S. thermophilus LAB KW15, and more eicosadienoic acid ($C_{20:2}$) from L. mesenteroides LAB KW5. Anti-H. pylori substances of LAB with IgY and A. auricula extract were analyzed for inhibition effect of H. pylori. The inhibition increased more by the range from 57% to 86% by the mixture. The substances with IgY and A. auricula extract showed more effective inhibition of H. pylori than single or double trials.
The inhibition/influences of adenine compounds on the heart have been described repeatedly by many investigators, since the first report by Druny and Szent-Gyorgyi [1929]. These studies have shown that adenosine and adenine nucleotides have an over-all effect similar to that of acetylcholine [ACh] by slowing and weakening the heartbeat. The basic cellular and membrane events underlying the inhibitory action of adenosine on sinus rate, however, are not well understood. Furthermore, the physiological role of adenosine in regulation of the heartbeat remains still to be elucidated. Therefore, this study was undertaken in order to examine the response of rabbit SA node to adenosine and to compare the response to that of ACh. Isolated SA node preparation, whole atrial pair, or left atrlal strip was used in each experiment. Action potentials of SA node were recorded through the intracellular glass microelectrodes, which were filled with 3M KCI and had resistance of 30-50 M. All experiments were performed in a bicarbonate-buffered Tyrode solution which was aerated with 3% $CO_2-97%$$O_2$ gas mixture and kept at $35^{\circ}C$. Spontaneous firing rate of SA node at 35C [Mean + SEM, n=16] was 154 + 3.3 beats/min. The parameters of action potentials were: maximum astolic potential [MDP], -731.7mV: overshoot [OS], 9 + 1.4mV; slope of pacemaker potential [SPP], 94 3.0mV/sec.Adenosine suppressed the firing rate of SA node in a dose dependent manner. This inhibitory effect appeared at the concentration of $10^{-6}M$ and was potentiated in parallel with the increase in adenosine concentration. Changes in action potential by adenosine were dose-dependent increase of MDP and decrease of SPP until $10^{-4}$. Above this concentration, however, the amplitude of action potential decreased markedly due to the simultaneous decrease of both MDP and OS. All these effects of adenosine were not affected by pretreatment of atropine [2mg/l] and propranolol [$5{\times}10^{-6}M$]. ACh [$10^{-6}M$] responses on action potential were similar to those of adenosine by increasing MDP and decreasing SPP. These effects of ACh disappeared by pretreatment of atropine [2mg/1]. Inhibition/effects of adenosine and ACh on sinus rate were enhanced synergistically with the simultaneous administration of adenosine and ACh. Marked decrease of overshoot potential was the most prominent feature on action potential. Dipyridamole [DPM], which is known to block the adenosine transport across cell membrane, definitely potentiated the action of adenosine . Adenosine suppressed the sinus rate and atrial contractility in the same dosage range, even in the reserpinized preparation. Above` results suggest that adenosine suppresses pacemaker activity, like ACh, by acting directly on the membrane of SA node, increasing MDP and decreasing SPP.
